I've not been able to watch the majority of these debates, is tonight's performance typical of Trump on those occasions? He's been fairly awful thus far.

If he doesn't get the required majority of delegates, he doesn't have the will of voters according to the GOP's own rules. I'd agree that they'll alienate a lot of their voters in denying him the nomination with a plurality, but they might justifiably answer they'll alienate a lot more by having a nativist who delayed in repudiating the KKK as their candidate.

I never thought this would happen, but Drumpf is beating them at their own game. Thankfully, the United States general electorate bears little similarity to the group selecting the GOP's candidate (the majority of which have so far said they'd be dissatisfied with him being the candidate, slightly more than both Cruz and Rubio). Whatever happens, the GOP's support will take a battering and they'll have to decide which course gives them a better chance to rebound from.

The US general electorate are all angry at establishment politicians from both sides. That is why Trump and Sanders are popular. Trump will in fact imo move to the left of Hillary for GE.
