2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi

Thanks for playing Shaun, maybe you should have competed in the slope style after all.

I'm watching Curling now and I don't understand what the feck is going on. Why are they sweeping the fecking floor? What's the aim of the game?

Sweeping the ice elongates the stone trajectory. It reduces the friction on the ice. It also slows down the rotation of stone.

Aim of each end is to score at least two points (most of the time) when you have the hammer, last stone, or to make opponent take only one point when they have the hammer. Of course, stealing the point or two (or more) would be preferable to that. That means, score when opponent had the last stone. Usually it's better to draw the end, taking no points and again having the last stone in next end, than to take only one point. Whenever a team scores, hammer goes to other team in next end.

It's brilliant sport. Bowls, snooker, chess on ice. Or somethin' like that.

Ah, sorry, forgot that. At the end of the...well, end, when all sixteen stones (8 reds and 8 yellows) are pushed, whoever has the stone closer to the center scores. If you have two or more stones closer to the center, they all score, but all of them have to be closer than opponents' stones. And only stones in the circles count.

Starting to make sense of the rules now. Last question, I am assuming throwing the last stone is an advantage? (China just slipped ahead 3-2 when they had the last throw in the end)

Yes, if you score when you have the last throw, the other team gets it for the next end. If no one scores or the other team score, you keep the last throw.

Yeah, quite an advantage. If you don't have last stone, you'd rather opponents score a point than be there a blank end (no score).

That stone looks clearly out.

Also why would they rather take no points than 1? That is bizarre!!

Edit: just read 2 posts above.

It's certainly a lot more interesting than Chess.

How man ends in all?

10 max I think, but it's also timed? So guess if one teams time runs out that's end of game?

But that could be wrong as the team in the lead now could just take shed loads of time for they next throw

However a game ended after 6 ends yesterday because one team conceded due to being miles behind.

They have to play at least six ends, but 11 is also possible. Extra one comes if score is draw after 10th end.

They are also timed separately, and I still haven't seen the game ended due to lack of time. Seen quite a few hasted shots near the end though due to it!

Exciting finish but Canadia wins.

Canada would have had the hammer in the deciding end yeah? If so, was probably the right choice to risk that shot, there was always a chance it would come off, even though it looked extremely difficult. There was also a possibility of us ending with 2 which would have still took it to the decider anyway.

Which one do you want to comfort Scrumpet?

I'll take care of the other three

Yeah if you have a throw to win it in that situation I think you have to go for it.

I'm watching the USA v Canada women's ice hockey now. They seem to have all there own teeth which is a pleasant surprise.

What's the point in this double luge? Seems a bit pointless, one guy sits on top of the other, top guy does all the work basically?

Why do snowboarders where mittens and not gloves?

People generally wear mitts because they are warmer, but to be honest its warm there at the moment so there's no need. Probably no reason other than because they like wearing them.

Two wins for Britain's curlers today.

British girl finished second in the speed skating but was disqualified for wiping everyone out. Seems the right decision but I still feel bad for her.

You guys will have a sure gold medal in skeleton for ladies. First two runs finished today, tomorrow last two, and GB representative has a gigantic lead.

The skiing slopestyle is so much more impressive than the snowboarding slopestyle.

It's also not full of insufferable stake bellends.

Just tuned in now, there are people running in skis. Literally running, what sport am i watching

Is it a ski marathon or something?

Thank God, the ice hockey is on now. I get this, it makes sense to me.
