‘Successful’ scenarios for Summer ‘23

I hope we can replace de Gea, Maguire and AWB or Dalot. Furthermore, I hope we bring in a central midfielder and a striker. That is five players, and probably eight significant transactions. Would be quite a big job. Not sure it is possible.

We could replace those three IF the new owners are in place, mind you Erik may still be unsure about the RB situation. Think it's telling what he said about De Gea's keeping

D De Gea been a great servant but no keeper is worth £375k per week, you can simply not renew or renew at 150k per week which is what an elite GK would get on a free. I think we need a new Number 1 but we need a CFW and BTB no 8 much more !

Was something about his poor kicking
Didn’t he just blame it on the Europa league football. Do think it’s interesting that over the two games against Betis DeGeas kicking looked extra terrible.

Any way, ideal summer depends on many things FFP, new owners but we certainly need a goal scorer, and midfield is just meh. Defence again depends on if Maguire and Lindelof are happy being 3rd or 4th and anyone you bring in are they better than Varane or willing to be his back up.

I think we need 2 in midfield at least that could start and probably an understudy for Cas.

Swap Timber for Kim MIn-Jae and Sabitzer for Rabiot and I’m with you. Would also keep Sancho though and shift on Elanga and Henderson instead.

Do we get rid of 3 homegrown players and bring none in, Sancho is not leaving the squad needs 8 Homegrown players from 25 and if the squad is bigger than 25 it needs more homegrown additions; Here’s a more realistic Squad next year based on FFP sustainability rules, Qatar ownership and PL Homegrown Rules.

GK(3) D D Gea, *B Verbruggen(15M), T Heaton (HG) contract extended

SOLD - D Henderson(HG) (20M), N Bishop (HG)(Loaned) , M Kovaar (HG) ( Loaned)

Defenders(9) -AWB(HG), A Frimpong(30M), D Dalot(HG), R Varane, K Min Jae(45M), L Martinez, V Lindelof , L Shaw (HG),
T Malacia

SOLD - H Maguire (HG), (35M), B Williams (HG),(5M), E Bailey (10M), A Teles(10M) P Jones (HG)released, A Tuanzebe (HG) Relelased, Alvaro Fernandes (HG) (loan), E Baird (HG) (loan) T Mengdi (Loan)

Midfield (8) - Casemeiro, Eriksen, Bruno, K Maino (HG), A Rabiot (Free) , Sabitzer (15M) , Fred, H Megbri (HG)

SOLD - S Mctominay (HG) (25M),
Z IqBal(HG) (Loan) , C Savage (HG) (Loan),

Attack(8) - J Sancho (HG), Antony, A Garnaucho (HG), M Rashford (HG), A Martial (HG) , *M Kudas (45M), *V Osimhen (120M), A DIalo (HG)

This would give the squad 28 players and 10/11 Homegrown players, I’m not sure about D Dalot but he did join at 18 and has been with the club for more than 3 years, this is why Martial will probably be kept as well, he actually joined at 18, he’s now 27 and been with united for 9 years.

SOLD - Maybe Martial (15M) dependence on who will buy him and the M Greenwood situation I think Martial stays and the club under new management may sell Greenwood (40M) abroad or dare I say it PSG but nothing would surprise me with this situation, we could sell both or keep both! A Elanga (HG) Loaned, F Pellistri (HG) Will be loaned and A Dialo May get a PL loan if ETH buys M Kudas who can play RWS, No 8, False 9, Number 10 and he is just a more mature physical upgraded version of Dialo right now, Amad may have the higher ceiling in the future though.

I can see ETH telling our new owners he was desperately short of players to compete on all fronts this season due to to the intensity of the PL and needs upgrades and more options. The new players would potentially cost £270m and the club could recoup £90-110m back in sales. This is easily doable under FFP sustainability new rules where 90% of income can be spent on wages, Agent Fees and Net Amortised Transfer Fees.

Why does he need 3 Right backs, well Dalot can play right or left back and AWB will be coached to play as CB under ETH as well. Plus one of our right backs is always injured so let’s have 3.

This squad excites me because we have options and should Casemeiro be injured or Banned, Adrien Rabiot can play CDM or number 8, We could Finally play 2 Great starting 11’s ;

First 11
B Verbruggen(GK) *Frimpong, R Varane, L Martinez, L Shaw, Casemeiro, Bruno, M Kudas*, J Sancho or Another ?, *V Osimhen, M Rashford
(I think the interchangeability of the players would allow us to become an attacking monster)

Alternative 11
D De Gea, AWB, K M Jae, V Lindelof, D Dalot/T Malacia , A Rabiot, Sabitzer, Eriksen, Antony, Martial, Garnaucho

Don’t really get your point at the start. Raya is homegrown and Lavia is or will be homegrown so that’s two HG being brought in.

In terms of rules is it not that you have a 25-man squad but players u21 don’t have to necessarily be registered?

Raya*
Heaton or Butland*
Bishop or Kovar*

Wan-Bissaka*
Frimpong
Shaw*
Malacia
Kim Min-Jae
Varane
Martinez
Lindelof

Casemiro
Fred
Rabiot
Lavia*
De Jong
Bruno
Eriksen

Sancho*
Antony
Pellistri
Rashford*
Garnacho*
Osimhen
Martial*

25 players including 9 (or maybe 10 with Lavia) homegrown players.

And what a squad it would be…

If you keep David De Gea as backup in that team it would be a dream team but of course only a dream team because as we all know by now, de Jong is not coming and Kim might be difficult to convince given that we already have 2 star CBs he has to fight with

Yes on under 21 however 8 of your registered squad must be homegrown you can have as many under 21 players as you like. For the record Pellistri is also homegrown as well from the summer of 2023, we bought as an 18 year old in 2020 and his three years of development are up this summer which is why he holds more interest to the club, he turns 22 December this year so he’s got a bright future too , I Lavia but City have first refusal on him and who would want FDJ but does he want United, highly doubt it with the wages owed to him by Barca.

Martial isn't homegrown either. Frimpong would be however.

It'll be a very interesting summer thats for sure.

You'd have to assume the majority of these player's will be moved on or released: Jones, Bailly, VdB, Maguire, Williams, McTominay, Henderson, Tuanzebe, Telles, Martial, De Gea, Greenwood and one of Dalot or Wan Bissaka.

However we also don't have a great deal of depth, the fact that we have no real replacement for either Eriksen or Casemiro; no real first choice (let alone backup) striker; a huge drop off at CB after Martinez & Varane, no goalkeeper suited to Ten Hag's system and two RB's that should both be second choice at best says a lot. Not that anyone would expect 7 signings (or 13 outgoings).

However as has often been the case over the last decade (and arguably in Fergie's latter years) we've found ourselves with a double digit quantity of players that need moving on and half a dozen that need bringing in.

Given our £1b of debt and having spent as much as we did last year, alongside the Capex required to modernise the club's facilities; you've just got to hope our new owners have very deep pockets.

I think Evan Ferguson is a player we should be keeping an eye on. A young player with bags of potential that a coaching set up with Ten Hag and Benni McCarthy could really develop. If we don't go for him this summer i think he will be gone elsewhere.

If I were spurs I’d be aiming to get some money for Kane from us and reinvest it in Evan Ferguson.

Not against us going for Evan but I just think we’ll be looking for a forward with more experience who can help us challenge right away.

That being said I’m sure he is on our radar, so if Spurs won’t sell us Kane, Osimhen is being priced at £150m and Benfica want the full £100m of Gonçalo Ramos’ release clause, then maybe he could be next on the list.

I agree we should be looking at him especially if Kane is priced out of it. I fear Newcastle could also be looking.

We need a centre forward as first priority, might be Greenwood, might be a purchase. If money is tight, we might try and spin a redemption / homegrown story here. I don't feel great about it, but it wouldn't stun me if we did. Not convinced on Kane at the wages / fee involved.

I think we also need a keeper who is better with his feet. I love De Gea but his story is coming to an end here. The defence is largely fine, an upgrade at right back wouldn't go amiss. In midfield I think it's time to move on Fred whilst he still has some value. His game time is going to be limited.

Otherwise, I don't think we're all that far off. The other departures are entirely obvious.

Ok here the issue most online information with regard to homegrown states that if the player is bought at 18 and plays three years for the academy then on their 21st birthday they become homegrown see example -

https://www.themag.co.uk/2022/08/ho...-comparison-to-other-19-premier-league-clubs/

This would mean Pellistri qualifies this year as homegrown providing he’s played games for the U23 gone on loan contract is with parent club and Martial must be the same we bought him as an 18 year old.

I stand corrected just looked at PL website where Antony Martial is not homegrown nor D Dalot but F Pellistri would fit the criteria when he leaves the U21 squad to go to main squad as this is his 3rd year, we need to be careful with this going forward.

Pellistri missed out because he spent 1,5 years in Spain for Alaves who isn't an FA member.

Martial and Dalot had both turned 19 already when they joined so they wouldn't have qualified regardless.

Now Amad is even more interesting, because sending him to Scotland last season may have messed with his status as well. My napkin math tells me its going to be ok, but it'll be very close.

All these are good points, and you wonder why we allow loans abroad rather than to championship / smaller Premier league teams? Surely it is in our interests for these kids to learn the language, culture and get used to the style of play in this country. Maybe once they are qualified as homegrown at the age of 21 we should send them abroad for a year to learn another language / culture / style.

Yep homegrown now is a minefield and people wonder why United Hierarchy are considering reintegrating a certain player who can not be named, and probably should be sold, we desperately need to keep Garnaucho, Maino, IQbal, Huigall, McCann, Mejbri , savage and A Fernandez

CF, CM, WB. We could potentially challenge if we get those right. I think it's worth holding onto Sabitzer, too.

Kane/Osimhen
De Jong/Bellingham

Possibly a third CB Kim Min-jae?
Sign Sabitzer if its <20m
New GK if De Gea does not renew

It's a newer thing to be fair. Prior to Brexit you'd typically acquire youngsters at 15/16 and they'd play for a few years for your U18/U23 and end up almost having home-grown status before loans were in question.

Nowadays, with 18 being the lower limit, you very much hamstring yourself (as far as home-grown status goes) by letting them go back out on loan abroad.

Don't see money being tight with new owners so wouldn't worry about that scenario

A striker.
Another quality midfielder to share the work load. Possibly 2 if we can find the right deals.
Potentially a right back.

Perfect for me would be:
Incomings.
Osimhen
Frankie
Lavia
Rabiot
Ndicka
Raya
Outgoings.
Martial
Mctominiay
Maguire
Elanga
Telles
De gea
Fred

If you add one more incoming forward as a backup to osimhen and then also sell Baily and Williams then it’s perfect (but an unrealistic dream)

If Qatar come in then

Striker- Mbappe
CM- Bellingham
Another CM - Lavia or Gabri Veiga (or another equally talented young player)
CB- Kim min Jae
RB- Frimpong
GK- Mike Maignan, or David Raya

Watching El Classico yesterday was another reminder how far behind the times our midfield is. For me a successful summer would have to include two modern midfielders, even if it has to cut into the striker budget.

The smart thing to do is go for quality players that don’t already play for big clubs. There is no point in negotiating months without guarantees.

So please no FDJ, Kane or Osimhen. They are not attainable without tons of drama and twists

2 new central midfielders (with one being a top quality starter to pair with Case), at least 1 (preferably 2) CFs, and a 3rd CB who can rotate with varane to keep him fresh/fill in during injuries. If EtH wants a gk to better fit id understand that as well. Rest we can make do with our squad. Move out players who dont fit to help bring in the funds and should be easily doable. Think we have enough wide options for next season, and can probably keep working with improving our FB options if we absolutely have to. The spine definitely needs addressed.

Oh, just a btw sort of thing: I've been seing a lot of posters that seem certain we are getting rid of VDB. I'm unsure how realistic that actually is.

Given his history with Erik I think getting injured was "the best thing" (theoretical, of course) that could have happened to him as far as staying goes.

I have an inkling Erik could be inclined to give it another go once he's recovered.

You lot are seriously underrating our squad. Think a top class CF like Osmihen and a top midfielder like FDJ or similar would have us up there as proper title contenders next season. That’s still £200m though in this market.
Then FDJ or Oshimen get a knock and we're back to glass legs Martial and headless chicken McTominay

1 or 2 quality players would help us no doubt but we also need adequate backup.

For CM I'd say let's get Anguissa. Very compose on the ball, has physicality, knows how to defend, can dribble. Pair him with Casemiro and our midfield will be set.

Out: Maguire, Fred, Beek, Martial, Henderson, Jones, Bailly, Telles, Greenwood.

In: Osimhen, #8 handpicked by EtH, Sabitzer permanent, Amad integrated into the team, Hannibal, magical youth player who suddenly becomes amazing.
