İlkay Gündoğan Transfer Thread

I've literally not heard anybody other than the odd silly article (Sports Direct News!?) claim that we'll be signing him. Every actual person I've heard an opinion from thinks it very unlikely.

You must know lots of optimistic people. Either that or you wanted to look clever by posting a more informed point of view than all the other muppets in the thread, but forgot to read what anybody had actually been saying.

Well firstly you've used literally wrongly there, since there's people in this thread that seemed to think we would. Unless you wanted to look clever by suggesting I'd wanted to look clever by posting a more informed point of view than all the other muppets in the thread, but forgot to read what anybody had actually been saying, but forgot to read what anybody had actually been saying, of course.

Secondly, I've heard lots of people saying Gundogan would be a good option and a far more realistic target than any midfielders from "big" clubs, like Cesc or Modric.

Too beautiful to happen... in this window.

I think it would be similiar euphoria and cock out, comparable to moments after official news of RVP, arriving on medical tests.

Since post 234, which was the start of the current speculation, I can't see one person claiming this will happen.

The nearest opinion is "definitely not this summer... possibly next but even then very unlikely"

#258, #267,# 269.

Some people there seeming to think that we could get him, or that he'd be an easier target than Fabregas, for example.

Note, nowhere did I say I'd seen people claiming it would happen.

Gündogan is currently negotiating a new contract with BVB... He has 2 years left on his current one if the new one happens clubs have to pay a hefty sum to sign him up..

Actually atm it looks like isn't going to sign a new contract at least not before the WC and not without a buyout clause. Dortmund doesn't want contracts with buyout clauses anymore but also seem to be unwilling to throw enough money at him that he will sign without such a clause especially not for 5 years.

Atm I'm quite positive that he may be a hot topic next summer after the WC for quite a few teams I just don't know if we are genuinely interested in him and if we stand a chance of signing him if Real and Barca get involved.

That's interesting... Surely, we'd be one of the favorites to sign him? Barca and Bayern can't possibly fit him into their already stacked midfield!

You never know with Real though. They will sign stars for the sake of signing stars.. City and Chelsea can also offer better terms.. feck, we won't get him..

He'll sign on even if he intends on leaving, just to ensure Dortmund get a decent fee for him. He sounds like a sensible guy, who's really happy at Dortmund and really rates Klopp, so who knows.

I would suggest our handling of Kagawa has not done us any favours in Dortmund (or even Germany) in terms of attracting their players. I think there's a genuine question mark right now over whether we are the right destination for technically-gifted players; we just don't seem to know what to do with them.

We're never the favorite to sign anyone in this day and age. Ever. Remember when we said to ourselves we're a favorite next destination for Bale? Hazard?

Oh you addressed that already!

Yeah, we said the same about Thiago. Xavi will be 34 and they don't see Fábregas as his natural successor.

We have zero chance to sign Gündogan and that will only decrease with a World Cup. All the big clubs will be in for him.

I wouldn't go as far as that. I mean who would've said there's ANY chance Wenger could sign Ozil, right? Never say never. We might not be the favorite, but our name will probably thrown in the hat and who knows what might happen. We'll cross that bridge when we get there.

Gundogan won't be Xavi's natural successor either although they will have to go out and buy someone when he hangs his boots as they don't have anyone within their ranks capable of replacing him long term (Fabregas could be that man but his role will be more advanced I think, ditto Iniesta).

We might have a chance if/when Real Madrid cast him aside. If he goes there and not to another top club or oil club.

Just can't see us getting him. He'll go to either Madrid or Barcelona who will both have a need for him. We always seem to pull out of race when one of these clubs show their interest. Reckon this is the player to go all out for if he becomes available. He was linked with us too before joining Dortmund :(

So you mean like after a few years of Perez gleefully rubbing his hands with his new toy and then throwing it away when he's bored? Yeah, about that... When was the last time we sign anybody in that mould? I'm sure I can think of names that we possibly passed on rather than signed, like Sneijder, Van der Vaart, and the very aforementioned Ozil.

I agree with that, don't get me wrong, he's a very different player but they might try to get him to fill that spot anyway. If it doesn't work out, he's probably even more versatile than Fábregas so it shouldn't be a problem for Barca. But Madrid are more likely to get him.

I'm not saying we'll be in for him then but we would have a chance of getting him once Perez gets rid. When he's the fresh shiny thing on the market? No way.

Yeah German football is a 'cult'. I really don't think business will ever be judged on how we treat Kagawa. In terms of your last point we clearly did something right because we won the league.

To the person who mentioned our treatment of Kagawa.. he has mentioned a few times how he's happy and wants to fight for a place, more often than not citing that he could have and should have played better.

I'm pretty sure Kagawa can get into the team and be successful for us, if he can; it could only be seen as an advantage. Most transfers these days we see players talk about how an ex-player or an ex-team mate or international buddy had encouraged them to make a particular move.

Sometimes, I'd like us to sign players who are either not good enough or we don't need, just because of their contacts. It's pretty obvious we only got De Gea to try and lure the likes of Herrera and Thiago.
Same with Fellaini - we didn't get Hazard last year, we thought 'damn, we need to buy a Belgian player - even if he is shit - just to attract future Belgian talents.'

He's clearly a top midfielder, one of the very best CM's in world football ATM.

How exactly is he a top player prey tell?
Are you trying to say gundogan isn't a top player? Have you ever seen the guy? He's one of the best in the world that any team would love to buy, and he would instantly start I pretty much any team out there.

Can't see us getting him if he decides to leave next year. Although a midfield of Carrick and him sounds tasty. Barcelona will be all over him, so will Chelsea and City. We'll have a sniff, than see that their are bigger dogs around and then quietly step back.

Dont underestimate us.. We have been following him for a long time now and he likes us, using the "new Scholes" could spark a fire in him!
But feck your right!

I wonder what would replace this line when City fans are talking about getting a new player? Maybe something like this: "throwing a shit load of money at him could spar a fire in him!"

Sadly I think City's concept works better with most players.

Successor to Xavi perhaps? I don't think Iniesta will drop back into that role nor will Fabregas.

He would be absolutely perfect for us - better than Thiago would have been.

the fact we were after him at before he moved to Dortmund may help, but probably won't mean much.

I remember him taking a photo infront of the TV in a CL game with Utd and Galatasaray playing.

Maybe a fan? oh well a muppet can dream

I thought Busquets is Xavi's most likely successor, if they really want to keep the same shape in midfield. Most likely they will change it to fit in other players, then Gündogan should be on top of their list, but Busquets is imo more comparable to 2009-2012 Xavi than anyone else.
