To be fair, after almost 4 years out.. Your not really going to be Man City standard.

to be fair, I was talking about his career. He retired after City, didnt go on to play lower league, MLS, or even in China.

Therefore, Fergies point was rubbish

Im not too sure about his medical condition? something about his back? I really dont want another Hargreaves here, wasting a spot in the squad.
I feel the media are just trolling us anyway. Gundogan 32m, Kroos 250k p/w, Reus 35m. Thats atleast 90m pounds worth of talent before we even think about a Vidic replacement, a new first choice left back and one or 2 squad players.
I would love it to be true and if we did sign those 3 Germans it would certainly make us a force in Europe again.

For someone who hasnt seen a great deal of Gundogan play - Who would he compare too? what type of midfielder is he?

Why isn't he? We can offer twice the wages Dortmund can.
We may sign him only if the other biggies (especially Real/Barca) don't go for him. With his medical conditions I don't think that they will so we have to take a punt on him. The dithering Dave should transform himself into the muppet Dave and go for him.

I don't really know who I would compare him to specifically, but if I were to describe him, he is a very all-rounded type player. He can play in the holding role, box-to-box, and advanced if need be, he's versatile. Great passing and vision, strong in tackles, has a good shot; he's pretty much got what you want for a CM. His stats aren't very impressive in terms of goals and assists (about 6 G+A a season), but he keeps things ticking over really nicely for Dortmund, and controls the midfield as well as anyone I've seen. Someone mentioned previously that their game vs Bayern in the supercup was one of the best CM performances they have seen in a while, and I agree, it was a great performance against one of the best midfields in the world:

@MoneyMay that video felt a lot like it was your work?

He sounds like the exact type player we need.

I sometimes think we are guilty of moving the ball from Defensive areas to attacking areas far to slow. If he can speed that part of our game up then im sure he will be worth every penny.

Not to distract too much from Gungodan but, in his first season Hargreaves treatment was to use injections of some kind to treat him. It allowed him to play but, it only made the problem worse. More than Bayern selling us a crock, it was IMO more of a case of a misdiagnosis in conjunction with probably all parties wanting him out on the field, incuding Hargo - that lead to his shortened career.

If we do look at Gungodan - hopefully we'll be a damned sure this time as to what the right program will be for him.

He said at City that he wouldn't contemplate not playing top league football, he trained with QPR that summer who did not give him a contract... so he retired. He's a bit like Owen, could probably of played on if he was willing to drop down a level or few...

Dont you think even the likes of West Brom, West Ham etc would have taken a chance on a top notch player like him, if there was even a slightest chance that he was fit?

for Fergie to say it was all in his head was bizarre in the extreme. All in Fergies head on that one i suspect

Not with the new squad limit rules no... Top notch player he was but after that amount of time out, and barely playing at City. I doubt he was at this level anymore, hence why QPR did not take him on and clubs were not willing to take a risk (i think Sunderland had him that summer as well).

Good post.

Yeah, that's my video. :)

the simple fact is, he played 4 more career games then retired due to injury. Off course clubs were not willing to take a risk, they knew he was knackered, it wasnt in his head like the nonsense Fergie was spouting in his book.

I agree with this

I'am very uncertain about this signing if it does go through. Not because I don't rate Gundogan, but him being our major midfield signing for the summer, costing alot of money and after that finding out he is an injury nightmare is probably the worst thing that could happen for next season and for the forseeable future for that matter.

I can already picture it, him being a massive coup in the summer, the muppets getting all overexcited. The club saying we have a massive player in him but need to be patient because he is still getting back from injurry. Waiting for months to see his debut, than him getting a relapse and the club sticking by this player because they believe he'll come good and will be massive. Us counting him as an important midfield player for years, until we finally realise we made a terrible mistake by signing him and should go on the look for another midfielder. Worst case scenario isn't even that we won't get to see the best Gundogan or see him at all, worst case is that his signing (if he proves to be an injurry nightmare) might drag on our midfield crisis for another couple of seasons and will provide the board with another excuse not bring in another player (or players) because we already have Gundogan.

That really worries me. We really need to get somebody in this summer and it has to be bang on, us taking a big risk that could go terribly wrong and results in the current midfield crisis being dragged on for another couple of seasons, is a dumb move for me. If we get him, he needs to be checked and double checked and tripple checked for these injurries and we really need a very good assessment of what all the risks are about him and we should only get him if we are absolutley confident that we will be able to prevent the worst case scenario with him. I hope if we get him we take some insurrance measures and performance related bonusses in his contract. Signing him up for a 5 year deal and paying him a ton of money while he is constantly out injurred would just be an absolute nightmare.

I'm not sure why people are so concerned about his fitness. We could offer him a small 2 year deal with an addition 2 years automatically trigerred if he plays 50% of the matches.

I would rather release Anderson on a free to pay for his wages, if it came down to that worry.

You'd need a very strong mentality to come back from a serious injury though. It's the lack of that Fergie was probably meaning, not just saying he wasn't really injured!

I'm not sure that "having a strong mentality" can regrow knee cartilage....

He came back from that didn't he? It was the constant other niggles after that I thought,.

His injury is apparently a case of spondylolisthesis. If that's correct, it'll keep him out from time to time, and decrease his the duration of his career.

Funny, when I try googling it wrt Gundogan, all I get is links to forum threads from all over the place. There seems to be no official confirmation.

And oh, the first link on Google is a thread on Redcafe.

Bollocks. Complete and total bollocks.

Is his name pronounced Gun-do-wan? Not Gun-do-gan?
It depends on Gundogan himself really, as it's pronounced differently in German and in Turkish. In turkish it's more like the first one, but closer to "goon" then "gun" I guess.

Not the most reliable of sources but interesting to see if others follow up with this report.

Gundogan is a top player, and if he signs a contact to extend it's not the end of the world, we could use Mata as a box to box player, or even the likes of Pereira coming through the academy.

Ideally if Gundogan was available you'd want him, and I hope it still happens.

A lot is down to Gundogan himself if he wants to stay or leave, but Dortmund are doing well financially so for Dortmund fans you hope he stays, for Premier League fans, you hope he comes to Manchester United and England but he needs to do whats best for his career and himself.

Problem is we need some well needed pace to the midfield and someone that can tackle and do everything, players like Carvalho can't really do box to box, the only two big players right now who can do that are probably Gundogan and Vidal, Vidal is completely out of the question so then it's either Pereira in the youth academy being pushed to the first team, or a nice bid for Gundogan to pry him away from Dortmund.

They posted an article three hours later that said Gündogan has passed a medical at Barcelona:confused: . Nevertheless, Gündogan is the type of midfielder that United needs to play the box to box midfield role. If we lose out on him, their is arguable a potentially good a replacement in Mateo Kovacic. Considering our possible champion league exclusion next year, we may see more situation where we lose out on quality players if we are in competition with another party.
