I think the fact no one bid for him in January proves that no club will take a risk on him at this moment in time. He wasn't cup tied for CL football, so why did we not bid for him then?

Clubs would have been in contact with his representatives and they probably informed the clubs that both he and the club were not going to cut ties in January so there is no need wasting time putting a bid in.

I think United, or any other big club who were thinking of moving for him, wil be kept well up to date with his medical progress.

How could you possibly know that?

No what, that no one bid? I guess I can't and it is just an assumption, but I doubt anyone in their right mind bid for this player in his current state.

Without a doubt yes, but wasn't he already meant to be playing? You can have all the medical professionals in the world tell you when they think he's going to be fit, but that doesn't mean any guarantees, does it?

I agree with the notion that we should go all out for him in the summer. In differing circumstances we might have had a very slim chance of signing him if any going head to head with the likes Real and Barcelona. But the season away from football seems to have deflated his stock in the market. We must take advantage of the situation. It might be a risky situation but we have brought it upon ourselves tbf and beggars can't be choosers. It is delusional to think that high calibre players like Kroos, Vidal or Cesc will be lining up to sign for us this summer when we clearly have a manager still uncertain in his ways and the lack of European football.

We have to metaphorically roll the dice with Ilkay and hope he can make a full recovery. A fit Gundogan would provide everything our midfield is lacking. He's highly mobile, has immense vision, can run the show from the centre, pessesses great stamina and pace, has a good defensive work-rate and most importantly doesn't shirk from taking responsibility. The last quality is highly under-rated and we can see the likes of Cleverley and even Carrick to a certain extent passing the baton to others rather than manning up. How many of our current central midfielders could step up and convert from the spot in a European final ?

Well, I suppose both Carrick and Anderson scored in the shoot out in the Moscow final....

You're spot on mate but IMO the emphasis should be on them doing that currently. I just think our players look psychologically shattered these days. Moscow seems like ages ago now. Anderson was a fearless upstart then and even Carrick these days looks a shell of his former self.

How reliable is he? That would be great news.

As has been said, without CL football you might need to take more risks than usual. Go for a player while there are doubts over him because if we wait and those doubts fade, other clubs can come in and we could lose out.

Liverpool took a risk on Suarez that other big clubs were not willing to take. I know it wasn't injuries that were the risk in that case, but his mentality and discipline was an issue. They gambled and it has paid off big time for them. We may need to do the same. If he can get fit and well he is exactly the type of player we need.

EDIT: I posted before I saw those papers. Can't help but wish there was a more reliable paper going with the story.

Honestly, I haven't seen much of him. I remember watching the CL Final last year, and I think he impressed me. Scored the equaliser for Dortmund and in general looked like a good player. The hype around him seems to be awesome so I'll trust it.

I just hope he doesn't turn into a Hargreaves.

I've not seen much of him this year but saw a lot in their road to the final last year and wanted us to sign him then. I think he would be awesome for us.

He's a fantastic player, just been injured all season pretty much. The big question around him is are these injuries the type that have a lasting effect and will these long periods be a regular occurrence, or is just a one time thing of bad luck? A fit Gundogan would be perfect for us though.

Okay, so how bad is this back problem really? What are the odds on him being another Hargreaves?

Class player though.

I didn't realise he had barely played this season. What's he been out with?
I've read several different stories, but the one his father (and he himself?) told, was that it was not a serious injury. Perhaps they play it down, but they claimed it was an inflamed nerve in his back. The inflammation just wont go away, and all they can do is play the waiting game.

He was rumoured to have some kind of spinal condition... it is worryingly reminiscent of hargreaves...

Just had a look, it seems he returned to training during the winter break, only to fall ill with bronchitis

25M?

We should be laughing to the bank with that. Forget the injuries, if we paid 27 for Fellaini, Gundogan's worth more on one leg!

Some would argue that's a lot of money for a player with recurring back injuries, hasn't played for months and only has one year left on his contract. The injury part is what has people worried most. Signing a much needed CM and risk see him become Hargreaves 2.0 is...risky.

Don't think his injury is "recurring" It's just one injury that he has not yet to come back from, he was training with Dortmund during the winter break but then got ill. No real update on him since that though.

Any genuine newspaper/site carrying this story or is it just the Sunday World, People and Star? They have at different times in the past year said we've had deals done for Fabregas, Thiago, Herrera, Zidane and Beckenbauer.

"Never trust a sunday newspaper football headline." (Nietzsche)

Gundogan is as good as any box to box midfielder on the planet....he would be nothing short of a phenomenon for us if we managed to get him and he managed to stay injury free....his signing would exorcize the demons left by that muppet pogba pretty quickly...on form in this moment when fit gundogan is a better player than pogba

Can't see him moving to United. I feel the papers are just running with the story of the club rebuilding after keeping Rooney and Kagawa's inevitable departure.

Nothing in it in my opinion. Would love to be wrong though.

Agree with all of that unless his back problems have a long term impact on his career.

There aren't many options out there with his skill set and quality, I think he's worth the risk at this juncture.

The Spanish press were reporting a couple of weeks ago that Real Madrid have pulled out of this chase. They're too nervous about the back trouble. They also think we're now in pole position in terms of him moving this summer.
