By the way, isn't in inevitable that Madrid buy him for a similar fee to what we paid for Fellaini and for a good old RedCafe meltdown to occur?

Love the expression "readying a bid" as if they're on the phone and Moyes and Woodward and panicking over where the wallet is.
I do wonder what is all the work required in making a bid for a player. Can't be that complicated really. All last summer we hazard talks of preparing bids yet apart from 30mil for fabregas did we really bid anything?

They don't know the meaning of buying a player for under £30 million nowadays, so I'm sure Dortmund will be wise to scroung every penny off them. But yes, if that did happen Kermit will be making many a visit to this site.

Madrid bought Dortmund's last midfield star for something like €20 million. :(

They bought Sahin for €10m because he still had a release clause from Dortmund's darker days.

A bit of background on the Real Madrid interest, which basically goes back to the idea that Gundogan and Lewandowski killed them in the CL.

Alonso has signed a new contract, but the fears about his fitness remain. They signed him to stop someone else getting him on a free and to ease the way for a new player - they think the number of matches he plays will need to be managed carefully.

Modric failed to take over Alonso's role while he was injured, He's good at lots of stuff, without being great. He's not a Spanish tiki-taka player, not a Dortmund-style pressing game leader either. Flppantly, he's a high quality PL style midfielder, but Madrid aren't a PL team. They bought Illarramendi but I bet they wouldn't have done if he hadn't been Spanish, he's good but he's not ready and Madrid will find it hard to give him the experience he needs.

Will they bid for Gundogan. Yes, unless Acelotti tells them not to bother.

Will they outbid us? Depends on how much we bid! I suspect they will sell Modric if Gundogan arrives because their finances are stretched right now and they've got a stadium redevelopment to fund. So one way or another, a shopping opportunity will remain.

It's McDonnell that is saying this and that we've talked to them, not sure whether that adds or takes away credibility.

Thanks for the update. It sounds like Khedira isn't even in their plans? And Casemiro is probably just squad cover.

If we're outbid for Gundogan, I'd take Modric in a heartbeat.

Khedira's out for the rest of this season, and after a cruciate injury a player whose biggest asset is his energy is going to have a question mark over him. Even fit, he's certainly no substitute for Alonso though.

Yeah, even when fit, he's better then what we currently have (to partner Carrick) but I wasn't a big fan.

Pity about his cruciate. Madrid should have cashed in on him in the summer if the 40M Euro bids were true. They're not going to get anywhere near that, unless he gets close to his best again.

Do you not think a Gundogan---Modric partnership will be quite decent? With Alonso and Illaramendi in there as well.

In the biggest matches, they'd probably like to have all 3, which makes me wonder what the plans are for Isco? Is he a definite bona-fide first team starter these days or not?

I haven't been watching them too much this season.

Modric has been great this season, he actual has been one of the best players in the team and is easily good enough to nail down a position for Real for the next few years. He is playing as well as I've ever seen him play. I'd take him over Gundogan if the choice was there.

I've noticed a real difference in the past couple of matches I've watched over last season's performances. He really was the heartbeat of the midfield in those games, and looks a completely different player. Whether it was nerves of playing for such a big team, or he didn't quite suit Mourinho's style at first, who knows. But Ancelotti has got him into some really good form now, and "biggest flop signing of the year" has well and truly gone.

The thing is he plays well with Alonso, and then the whole team plays well.

No Alonso, and this season Modric still plays well, but the team don't. He's played alongside Khedira, Illaramendi, and Isco but they work better with Alonso as well.

I still think he'd do better for us than for them.

Khedira, Ozil, Sahin, Isco, Casemiro were all less than £30m.

De Rossi for 10m for a start. Or Herrera for 30m. Or Matic for 25m. Or Thiago for 25m. Or Kondogbia for 20m. I'll stop there.

Er, I think we may have tried to sign Herrera, but couldn't for the money we had available (again, points towards a cap of around £28m for a non-fabregas player). Thiago was never going to come here either. You may have a point on the other ones, but it would be hard to keep them as last minute back-up like Fellaini. It's pretty obvious that Herrera was the one we were meant to get - that's where the real feck up happened.

Khedira's energy won't be affected; it's more the age that will slow a player down. I'm sure he'll be fine.

Only got a year on his contract. He'll choose a club. The transfer fee will just choose the timing.

A year and a half. On the other side he is a very young player. If he had more years on his contract I could have seen him going for around 50m, right now I think that 30-35 may do the job. It won't happen for less though IMO, especially not with Madrid on the mix.

Why are you doing this to yourself, people? When will the Caf learn?

Everyone's entitled to transfer muppetry, obviously, but my advice would be to forget about signing Gündogan or Reus. That's probably not the caliber we'll go for or have a realistic chance of getting.

I was reading something recently about Gundogan and it said that Dortmund are apparently willing to deal at £25 million due to his contract situation and unwillingness to discuss a new deal.

Hopefully that is true, but even if it is, I can see a bidding war for him. Madric, Barca and Chelsea very likely will be interested on him, especially at that price.

The logic behind that is bizarre. In fact there is no logic at all.

Here you have a player that is classed as one of the best midfielders in Europe and was central to Dortmund's success over the previous 2 seasons. At 23 years of age, he can only get better and is coverted by Real Madrid and Manchester United and surely a host of others should a bid be accepted.

Now despite all this, the media are claiming that they are unwilling to offer him a new deal despite him having just a year left come the summer and also that they will accept what is deemed by everybody to be a low fee for him.

If true (it surely isn't) then they are showing a complete lack of business sense and complete lack of footballing sense. It's obviously nonsense.

I tend to agree. 24 Mil pound or 29 Mil € is actually not that ridiculous if we are talking about a summer transfer. It´s not enough in January, though.

If Gündogan wants to leave and has offers from both Real Madrid and United, I sure hope that he chooses the latter. Not much because of my sympathy towards United, but because I don´t see him making it at Madrid.

I read today that he hasn't played since August.
Is that true? As I've not seen anyone write that on here, and it seems a slightly massive factor!!

He'd be guaranteed to start every week which I can see appealing to him.

Gundogan apparently is not willing to talk about a new deal, not BVB.

Thats correct. He has problems with his back for nearly half a year now.

Hang on. He's suffering back problems, hasn't played since August, contract running out and people think he's worth 70 mil?
