But you said he was bench player and the club as this time also had Tevez in the striker option. How the managers know him at a regular basis if he was being benched a lot ?
What the problem in him being a bench player before or not ? It can be problem for the fee and that's the point I agree with that we shouldn't pay what Madrid asked for him, but we should evaluate the player on his skills and abilities, not if he was a bench in a system not suited for him or not. I don't think anyone considered Robben a really successful player before joining Bayern from Madrid. Things change and a bench player can be great in other teams suited for him more.
Also he's not an old player anyway. He's only still 24 and didn't even reach his peak in football yet.
Didn't robben win the league with Chelsea and was considered as one of the best wingers in the world when he moved to real? I would count that as being successful.
Managers can see players in training? Thus can't be a new concept for you. The problem is that you don't know if he has the mentality to be the main striker and every single one of his managers have made a judgment that he isn't ready to be. We then come along on our white horse with a near world record fee to make him our main striker and later moan when he disappoints. The lad doesn't even want to leave Madrid Ffs.
