I agree, but perhaps 1 of them won't be happy with a bench role. We definitely need another striker though. 2 isn't enough IMO.

Maybe Jose thinks that by adding Perisic then Martial can move into a striker role more often.

We need griezmann more than ever now , next season he is direct rooney's replacement for what rooney did.

Still think Jose will try to get him as well. We have ucl this season and one injury to lukaku could be trouble. We used to have 4 strikers under Fergie. We only have rashford for now as Jose considers Martial more as a winger.

4 strikers rotated in a 2 striker system is perfectly reasonable. 4 strikers for a 1 striker system would be overkill.

Love the stealth and diversionary tactics Woodward now employs with our transfers. What an amazing smokescreen that most United fans fell for.

A big royal two fingers at Madrid is always a fun thing to watch too.

Hahaha suck on that you sad playboy. I never wanted you at the club and I'm so happy I get to keep my dignity. Bye bye. Hope you'll get a nice contract somewhere else.

Which they will regret in the long run. No club on the planet will pay as much as United would have for Morata.

They will have to find alternative means to fund the Mbappe transfer now.

Despicable football club.

Hi, I guess I'll reply to all these! Long time lurker - now outed! Ha.

TBF to him they do seem to have contacts with some of the United players by virtue of interviews with them. How that stretches to transfer news too, I'm not sure. Most likely he's referring to Herrera based on memory.

We do - but most of those interviews are arranged by sponsors and we get in, do what we have to and get out and there's very little social interaction besides the few mins you're there with them doing a video and there's too many people around to start asking what their favourite star wars film is and do they wanna go for a pint. FYI I didn't meet Herrera when we filmed with Mata & Herrera.

Howson has a lot of Academy contacts but i don't know bout his first team contacts. He did say first team so I can only hypothesise that it was probably herrera. If he is telling the truth of course ;)

I do. I did. It wasn't. I was.

His does mention that Spanish players are teammates of Morata in the national team, and that's how they know. But his source is not necessarily a spanish first team player. Maybe word got around the first team.

Exactly.

i might be extremely wrong here, but wasn't it howson that first said on a FTD video that LVG was looking to get both Schneidelin and Schweinsteiger as a pair? When the rumours at the time were either schneiderlin or Schweinsteiger, but not both?

It might not have been him but for some reason he's the first one coming to my mind.

I don't remember how that went down. Wasn't my info that though. It came from Chris, I think.

I was only saying yesterday, there's been feck all in terms of leaks from United under Jose. LVG it was 50/50. Moyes & Fergie it was embarrassing how many leaks we had. I think moving from the Bridgewater hospital actually changed a lot of that, though.

I said on FTD I got a text message from a player. That was a lie. It was a whatsapp message. Apart from that everything I said was bang on. First team player at United. I'm assuming he got word through one of the Spanish players. Who I am assuming got word from Morata himself - being international team mates.

I don't get why they'd assume it was so close (exact words was 'by Sunday') only to fall through now - unless he was always plan B to Lukaku. I don't know if we've just played Madrid and Morata. I know only what I said.

I don't usually talk about transfers, as they're a feckin minefield. Last Nov or Dec Memphis told us he was going to Everton. That's what he thought. I did put that on Twitter. Which makes me laugh when people start giving ya shit - "tell your source he's a liar" - can only go off what you get told, can't ya?

I've had loads that I've been told and I've said nothing and it didn't come off - Fellaini thought he was going to Italy in Jan, even said goodbyes to his neighbours. Didn't go. Obviously. A club director told me Kroos was coming in 2014. Didn't happen. Fabregas' agent told me Fabregas would be Moyes' first signing - and I did write about that and it didn't come off. Rooney to China last summer was one I'd been told at the same time (Jan 2016) as a guy told me Jose was coming - one happened, one didn't what do you make of that? This summer I got told by an agent, one of their colleagues had been in Manchester on behalf of Madrid and they'd wrapped up De Gea & Aguero to Real.

It's an absolute mare.

So bottom line, I have no idea what's going on with Morata. That's the first I've heard about a signing this summer and it looks like someone got played, somewhere!

Love this. Real won't get even near to the asking price for Morata. They would end with unhappy striker who they'll sell next year for about half of the price they've been asking for(if they buy Mbappe or the next shiny toy).

Lukaku's deal had certainly removed any leverage Real had one us. However I still think we're in for Morata IF the price is right. Maybe Mourinho is considering changing formation to a 4-3-1-2 system used by Juventus when Morata was there?

thanks for the detailed reply mate. Much appreciated. :)

Great feck Real. Somebody give a thought to the player we have strung along all summer. I wonder if anyone has had the decency to contact him and have a word. Knowing our club probably not because we are as awful as Real.

Moot point anyway.

Ed will not be prepared to meet Real's asking price for Morata after shelling out 75m on Lukaku. Not in the same window anyway

Defoe would be a viable back-up for this season, after which we will go all in for Greizemann next summer.

 at folks feeling sorry for Morata, if he was that keen he'd have put in a transfer request and helped us wrap this up. Same thing Madrid fans gave DDG a lot of shit for.

Of course we all know who will now score the winner in the Supercup. Not Lukaku. Him, Pogba and Lingard will be too busy practicing their dances and dabs.

There was no smokescreen. We were working on both in case the other fell through. Morata will probably end up at Chelsea now.

Maybe yes, maybe not. Morata had already played with a Lukaku type of player before

Morata is the biggest smokescreen in the world.

Great business from Woodward that, but if we really just used him and will not go back for him now when we got the upper hand, I find it a bit to cynical for my taste tbh.

Said in another thread too, but with United briefing a fee agreed with Lukaku, Everton denying that, Chelsea saying they're still in for him... wouldn't be surprised if this is a way to get Madrid to back down and knock 5-10m off the Morata fee. All the reports coming out of Spain over the last couple of days suggest the Morata deal was/is very far down the line and close to being done.

What does that 4321 formation look like?

Teaching Real a lesson after the De Gea and Ramos fiascos?

A bit hard on Morata if so.

I'll never forget his game for Juve a couple of years ago against Bayern. He was immense. I can't help thinking he'd be more suited to us than Lukaku.

Odd the amount of people supporting the Lukaku deal though.

But this was my first thought as well, just a bit of brinksmanship to push deals through and everyone goes home with the player they went after first anyway.

Shall be interesting. I'd happily take both or either, don't even know which i'd prefer. Just hope we buy a midfielder too.

If he was used as a leverage for Lukaku deal it would be bad for him,but it's not like he pushed that much for the move either. What Real want is ludicrous for a rotational striker and he knows it himself.

Morata was also perfectly comfortable in the Teveth role (ie partnering Llorente or Zaza)

Adv:

- Carrick can easily slot in the Pirlo role
- Pogba was splendid in that formation
- Herrera can do a great job in the 'Marchisio' job
- Nainggolan/Mkhitaryan can do the Vidal's job

So how will it fit at United

GK- DDG:Buffon

Ball playing CB: Lindelof: Bonnucci
Tough CB: Bailly:Chiellini
R-Wingback: Valencia:Lichesteiner
L-Wingback: Shaw:Evra

Deep-lying playmaker: Carrick:Pirlo
B2B: Herrera-Marchisio
LSM: Pogba
Workrate monster AMC: Naingollan/Mkhitaryan-Vidal

Deep lying striker: Martial/Morata:Teves
STK: Lukaku/Rashford: Morata

Agreed. But if reports were to be believed, we made 100% effort to sign him. Real, just being themselves kept pricing us out and we had to say enough is enough at some point in time. Would have loved Morata, but it was like chasing a carrot on a stick.

What was the two strikers specific jobs in that formation?

Essentially this would be a 4-4-2 diamond with the fullbacks in a more advanced attacking role?

I'd be comfortable with Valencia on the right, not so much with Shaw/Darmian at leftback.

We have the midfield and forward line to make it work though.

Still can't see Jose swapping out a system that hase brought him so much success over the the years.

I'd have liked Morata but, as we know, Mou gave Woodward lists of players so if one deal fell through another was in line behind.

Madrid played too hardball. Had the deal gone through earlier I doubt we'd have gone for Lukaku.

Perez kept pushing the price up to the point where it became a straight £75m fight between a Premier League proven striker and a non Premier League striker. Understandable for United to go for the Premier League proven option.

Morata should feel betrayed by Madrid not Man Utd.

With the 3-5-2 / 3-4-3 formation on the rise in the BPL, I wouldn't be surprised if we were going to sign two strikers and switch to a formation like this, would be much more effective.
