Álvaro Morata | Chelsea player

It's Morata for me, and I agree that I cannot see us spending that amount of money on two strikers - both of whom want to be the 'main man' - they are not coming to sit on the bench or play in a different position to accommodate one or the other.

Also, didn't Ed say in one of those shareholder type conferences that we're not going to be doing big spending this summer or something?
Fully agreed. In addition, we have other players on the wing or upfront who also will demand playing time. It's one or the other while Jose is looking for a winger as well

Were we or were we not trying to sign Griezmann to play with Zlatan? We don't have either of those, so logic dictates we'd be in the market for 2.

We do. And City will spend that much too.
We wont and we cant. No club will pay that kind of money this summer, not even City. And there is still FFP somewhere too

Griezmann is a completely different player than Morata or Lukaku. And I am sure that if we bought him, we would be done looking at strikers

Then you're deluded. No club can spend that amount of money for 2 players in the same position. Don't forget, we need another midfielder as well and just bought another defender. No team has the cash to spend a quarter of a billion
Got out of the wrong side of bed this morning, dear?

If we abandon our pursuit of Morata to sign Lukaku I'll actually feel pretty bad for the guy. Left his honeymoon to try and sort the deal out and everything

I still think Morata is the one we'll sign though.
He could have been more proactive tbh. Not seen him issuing a "come and get me plea" let alone slamming in a transfer request.

Very little chance of us signing both Morata and Lukaku. It's just another case of Keane/Lindelof or Matic/Fabinho. We have a position we need to strengthen, we show interest in multiple players for that position, some people think we will sign every player we show interest in. Personally I would prefer Lukaku but would still be very happy with Morata.

Did I crush your muppet dream? I don't mind having transfer discussions but they need to be reasonable

What are you on about? I never said anything either way about the possibility or otherwise of buying 2 strikers

I just asked you a simple question you utter tit

By the way, nothing you have ever said or ever will say will have the slightest bearing on any of my opinions anyway so you are barking up the wrong tree there. And I'm going to assume this goes for most others as well.

FFP is not an issue at all. City can get around it with dodgy books thanks to their financial backers, Utd have a preposterously large revenue that dwarfs transfer fees.

You can call Griezmann a #10 if you like, or a hard-working striker, whatever makes you feel better. But he's a striker, he plays up front or just off up front, if you're playing him then you're not playing a midfielder. You're playing someone who's going to be in the box scoring goals. United have lost him and Zlatan, so it makes perfect sense that they'd go big to replace them, as well as Rooney.

I'm not saying it's 100% happening, I'm just saying there's a clear logic behind it. No need to attack people for believing it's a possibility.

agree, if possible, get both for squad depth. If all of this new news is just fluff, then just get Morata and get him on the tour.

I would be amazed if we spend the kind of figures quoted just for squad depth. You also need to factor in Morata wants to move as he sees now as his time to play upfront as the main man, and Lukaku moved from Chelsea for similar reasons, one of them ending up on the bench again would just leave us with an unhappy player who cost upwards of £60m

Dou you believe we will spend 170m on 2 strikers?

I don't think we will sign both, but I don't think it's totally unrealistic. The biggest factor imo is wages and the clubs total wages, not necessarily the transfer fee(which will be paid over several years). Zlatan, Rooney, Bastian, Morgan and Depay gone. That's a hell of a lot of wages gone. We might be in for a surprise this summer. For all the stick Woodward gets, he ain't shying away from massive deals.

I'd imagine if we bought Griezmann we would still have been into a striker to fill the void left by Ibra.

Griezmann however can be #10 or even RW. Don't see a logic between both Morata or Lukaku myself however.

i don't think we are getting lukaku. It was more along the lines of getting both if they were really being offered. I don't ACTUALLY think that is likely, so get Morata and get him ready for the tour.

Morata is not a clinical scorer, but has far more ability than Lukaku. Signing both is not that unrealistic for me! If I had a choice of one, I would go for Lukaku. Proven in EPL plus Rashford can do what Morata can do. We need to replace Ibras 20+ goals. Im also expecting a new Martial to turn up and a stronger Rashford. A summer with no football usually leads to a better season for some.

We've got reports from the United end saying 'hopeful of a deal this week' combined with reports from Madrid's end saying 'deal could be done within hours, just a few million euros to be worked out'. It's close enough for twitter nomarks to start coming out of the woodwork to be the first to (prematurely) call it as 'done'.

We have no such reports - there is nothign on the website.

Nobody knows anything

Imo we signed a lesser player with a lot less potential and Madrid keep a star of the future. Far from pleased

:(
No wonder his wife unfollowed us on Instagram.

Oh well.. Missing out on a good striker... But on the positive side, we arent doing business with "that mob"

We'll get Griezmann and we'll have the perfect big/LITTLE combination..

Stay strong my man.

I guess Madrid got what they wanted.. They didn't want to sell him, made it as hard as they possibly could and we have moved on..

I feel for Morata. Madrid just don't have their players best interests at heart, they're cnuts. They won't get anywhere near what we were offering for him from anybody else.

I don't believe that I genuinely think they were trying to milk as much from us as possible.

Well that's that, then.

Should have kicked up a stink if he wanted the move, in an attempt to force them to accept a more reasonable fee for a player of his standing.

Madrid got what they deserved.

Real must be an utter bitch to do dealings with. Good luck trying to get Chelsea to cough up 70mill+ for a non starter.

I think we'll get him too.
If the Lukaku thing is true, Madrid are no longer in a strong negotiating position.
I dont think they are actively trying to flog him, but if they can cash in, they'll probably take it.

If Morata wants to leave and Madrid are open to selling, they might be more willing to negotiate on their asking price now that we probably wont have all our eggs in 1 basket.

But everything suggested the difference was only a few million.. weird that both clubs are playing hardball for an amount that small.... unless Lukaku was our preferred choice all along..

Yeah, that will never happen. And it was probably to our long term benefit to show that we won't either. We really need to rid ourselves of the notion that clubs should operate with a special United price for their players.

If he ends up at Chelsea I'll be gutted, this would have been such a good signing. Really odd decision by the club, once again.
There was a rumour that Lukaku was the preferred player Mourinho wanted but everyone felt he was going back to Chelsea so think we moved onto Morata. With the Morata deal being a struggle for whatever reason (likely Real's side) and Lukaku move to Chelsea seemingly stalling, there was an opening for us to swoop in and get him.

Every club has its own interests in heart as the first priority.
