If we lose, ETH should be fired.
This early in the season and so soon after his public backing, i would say that it would take 4-5 defeats within a 7-8 game period to do him

Come the Winter if we're nowhere in the league again, it'll be different

I go into every game absolutely desperate for him to show me something different and emphatically impress me. But it's so hard to watch when it actually starts. Can tell within 15mins if we definitely aren't going to win.

    And replaced with...?
One of his assistants until the end of the season. We should try and tempt Ancelotti. He’s won’t everything he can at Madrid. He’s probably one of the only managers who can compete with Guardiola.

And, if em, Ancellotti doesn't want to leave the Champions of Europe to manage us?

That’s why I said try and tempt him. He’s won everything at Madrid and could be persuaded. They can ask him if he wants to try and make us great again. We’re still one of the biggest in the world.

I'd be happy with RVN on an interim basis - if he proves himself, let him stay. United legend, played at the top level, knows what it takes to win, has won a league title.....good enough for me - just get the farmer out.

We have to score at least 4-5 goals in this one, anything less than that is rubbish.

Since ETH came in, have we scored over 3 goal in the league?

    That’s silly, stop being silly!

We beat Chelsea 4-1 at OT in the penultimate game of ETH's first season. Last season we beat Wolves away 4-3 at the end of February and Sheffield Utd 4-2 at OT in April. A bit underwhelming but it has happened...

Didn't he say the madrid job would be his last club gig?

I’m not sure mate. Was just a thought. He’s the type of calibre of manager we should be aiming for. He’s done it all and won everything. Like I said he’s probably the only one I can see competing with guardiola.

Ye and in all of them games except maybe the Chelsea one none of them was straight forward and a domination. So it doesn’t really count towards GD if we beat a team 4-3. We need the 4-0s. I mean Solskjaer managed to win games by 5 goals in quite a few games for us.

Yeah, we probably messed up the best window of getting him immediately after sir Alex's departure, could have possibly kept the machine rolling for a bit longer and make the transition much more smooth.

I said this in the ETH thread, but
from a job preservation standpoint if we lose/draw this game ETH is in big trouble. The next three PL games after are @ Palace, vs Spurs, @ Aston Villa, and then the second international break. If we are something like 2-2-3 and sitting 14th in the league table going into that break he could well be fired.

From ETH's standpoint Southampton is actually a high leverage game. They're so bad the optics will be terrible if we lose (will also be three losses in a row), and the next three opponents are much tougher so we may completely fall out of a respectable position in the league table.

He may get a bit more time even with a record like that, but surely if we're in the bottom half of the league by Christmas he's gone.

The reality of this game is that if we don’t win we are in big big trouble because Spurs and Villa are both better than us currently. We could easily be 4-5 points after 6 games, in which case I can’t see ETH staying very long

    Hojlund
    Garnacho Bruno Amad
    Ugarte Mainoo
    Dalot Martinez De Ligt Mazraoui
    Onana

We should start the next game with our best 11. If Hojlund can only do 45 mins then so be it. If Ugarte can only do 45 mins then so be it.

    Bench options:
    Zirkzee
    Rashford
    Antony
    Casemiro
    Eriksen
    Collyer
    Shaw
    Maguire

That's a good enough 11 and bench to beat Southampton convincingly.

Nobody on the bench has done well enough to start the game. It should be black and white from this point forward, the starting 11 speaks for itself until Luke Shaw is fit enough to rotate with Dalot and Mazraoui.

The only reason I could see Rashford starting at this point would be because he has a clause in his contract where if he's available he has to start.

Rashfords last 15 months doesn't get him a start at any Premier League club based on merit.

Hope we win this game. Early kick of on my birthday. Would be the perfect gift.

Will Højlund be back for this? When he got injured at the end of July he was ruled out for six weeks.

Even if he's fit to play there's no way he'd start and play an hour or more. I expect Zirkzee will start still.

7:30am local kickoff for me, gonna be really annoyed if I set an alarm to get up and watch us lose.

Maybe a bit of an odd tactical question here, but why does limited fitness mean you can't start?

Let's say Holjund/Shaw only have 45/60 minutes in them for the next game. You could still start one or both, then take them out at halftime or shortly into the 2nd half. The advantages of this strategy:
    1. You can sub them off for someone strategically based on the team need in the late game. If we're up 2-0, sub them off for defensive or young players. If we're down, sub them off for attackers. The reverse means you're putting them in no matter the score or they're not getting any game time at all.
    2. When you sub at half you retain ability to use three substitutions windows (still capped at five total subs). Slight advantage there
    3. Potentially you can stretch the guy's fitness a bit further as a starter, because they get the halftime break. They may be tired at 45 minutes, but be able to go another 10-15 after resting at halftime.
The only downside I see is it can limit your flexibility if you need to make card/injury subs early, because you have the non-peak fitness players you need to get off the pitch too.
But still, seems like a bit better to play a limited player for 45 minutes as a starter than 30-45 minutes as a bench player if he's one of your typical starting 11.

ETH is fecked if he doesn’t win this game. I suspect we’ll win slenderly and make it look so much fecking harder than it should have been.

1-0 contentious Bruno pen and half dozen Soton chances somehow missed

I’m going to be positive. I predict we are going to smash Southampton and finish 3rd. I don’t know why but in his 3rd season I think he’ll repeat season 1. He got smashed by Brentford and Brighton and then came good (we’ll sort of).

I have nothing to base this on except blind hope

    4-0 to Man Utd

Wishful thinking. Can’t ever remember us having a convincing 4-0 win under ETH. If we score 4 then you can bet Southampton will score 2 or 3

Our xG isn't actually too bad, and there have been spells this season where we've looked like wanting to control games. Despite this being a 12.30 ko I'm backing us to get over the line. Southampton being a possession based team should suit us and can see Garnacho having a field day

Such a sad state of affairs that it’s hard to see us winning this. Southampton will come at us all energy and pace and our lads will crumble. So predictable at this stage. Has 3-1 defeat written all over it. The manager will blame individual errors.

I think Southampton will have more of the ball, more shots, more chances etc as usual but we will nick a win. If Casemiro starts, we lose. He is done.

I'm braced for a looooong game.

I think you're completely wrong. I think a relatively easy 2-0 or 3-0 for us.

I can see ETH getting more time to bed in players and to show some signs of a playing system for the future coming together.
The issue, for me, is not so much the results it's that the football remains as disjointed as ever and we are into his third campaign.

If we take our chances, I think we will win - can't be relied upon unfortunately, so this could very much go either way, like all of our games. Can't be confident in this team at the moment.

I think EtH's long-term plan is to go with:

    Onana
    Mazraoui De Ligt Martinez Shaw
    Ugarte Mainoo
    Garnacho Bruno Rashford
    Hojlund

As his first choice XI. However, given Shaw's injury record it is probably optimistic. Dalot will probably end up featuring purely because he is continually fit. Yoro could replace De Ligt depending on performances and fitness when he returns, but I think the plan might be to have Yoro & another young CB in the near future as the squad options behind that first choice CB pairing (maybe Branthwaite if previous links were true). Will Rashford ever be able to recreate his good seasons? He's a player who has had probably a couple of good seasons for us, and a couple of awful ones, with some average ones in-between... This to me says the average ones are his usual level. If he could get 25~ combined goals/assists a season I think everyone would be content with him as long as we have a striker scoring 20+ and Bruno is hitting his standards.

I'm not sure how long it will take for EtH to have this XI consistently available - it obviously won't be this game against Southampton. But maybe he could sub on Shaw, Ugarte, and Hojlund if they're ready? Personally, I think Rashford needs dropping as well and just start Amad & Garnacho either side (of probably Zirkzee on Saturday). However, I think EtH is likely to start Rashford because he will probably be the freshest/fittest choice at this time. If we aren't winning games over this period before the next International break, I think he'll be very lucky to still be in the job.

    Onana
    Mazraoui De Ligt Martinez Dalot
    Casemiro Mainoo
    Garnacho Bruno Rashford
    Zirkzee

I think that's what I'm expecting him to go with. I hope we win, and I think we'll probably sneak it 1-2. Result is paramount, but they'll still be concern if we don't win well.

Any plan that includes Marcus Rashford being on the pitch is going to end in failure.
