A loss here might!!! just be enough to push EtH through the exit door but I’m not holding my breath. I won’t be watching this match on TV as I’m driving down to Cornwall for a holiday but will be listening on the radio. Wife might have to drive if it gets too tense listening.:)

Southampton have looked so bad in the bits I've seen of them this season that even off the back of two losses I struggle to see anything but a win for us.

Our options are pretty limited so I would go with...

Ugarte and Collyer in midfield and Mainoo replacing Bruno at no 10.

I am not totally sold on Collyer and to be honest, looks like McTom x2, but we just cannot pick Casemiro after that performance against Liverpool in this game. Someone else has to step up and I'd rather it be Collyer and Ugarte than Eriksen and Ugarte because at least Collyer will run.

We should have really seen this coming, concluded the business with PSG sooner and brought in Rabiot, failing that even Berge would have been solid. Just so frustrating to look at what we've got available.

It is a game we should win and probably will but you just know we will be hanging on in the last 10 minutes camped in our own box in desperate defense mode after missing countless chances to make the game comfortable.

They tend to turn up against us and nick points, nothing but an exceptional start and performance will suffice but I see this being a 0-0 or 1-1 and more pressure for ETH

If Erik is still in charge I cant see us winning this, we cant score goals and Saints will defend in numbers so this has got 0-0 written all over it.

Nah this has 0-0 for 93 minutes and in the 94th we give up a weak goal that could have been avoided.

We're somehow even weaker than last year (unless Ugarte basically transforms midfield on his own).

Effectively, Amrabat & Mctominay out, Ugarte & Collyer in. Even older legs in Casemiro/Eriksen.

It's ridiculous we consistently overlook such a key area.

26 points dropped out of a possible 63 the last decade to them

    41% dropped

    Grim..

Fofana was another one available for a decent price who would have given us an option and basically replaced Amrabat. Just staggeringly incompetent from us to be so light in midfield.

A strange sense of deja vu.

Jose's last season started with a cagey home win on a Friday, before an away loss to BHA and a three nil home loss.

Erik's first season started with one win and two defeats, before an away trip to Southampton in which we won to kickstart the season.

Ole's last season started with an encouraging home win before stuttering at Saints winded momentum.

Going around in circles, here. Wonder if we'll don grey and ship six (yes, I know).

Ugarte won't be starting given he's had no preseason and 1 training session with us so far. Combine that with the fact he won't land back until Thursday most likely and the game being the early kick off makes it even tighter. Add in Ten Hag saying it'll take him up to a month to get fit and it's basically a late sub appearance at best.

Ten Hag will start Casemiro to make it seem like he's going to be a key part of the squad, and quash any rumours of a disagreement.

Uraguays game is 11pm on Tuesday night so he'll fly back on Wednesday and will likely be training Thursday and Friday

My point exactly my brother is an ex saints youth player and a huge fan so I know all about this fixture !

This could be a good game in which to rejuvenate Casemiro, so perhaps play him.

We'll need him as we progress.

If we lose, there is a strong sense EtH will be getting clipped.

After a game finishing in the early hours of Wednesday and an 11 hour flight back, I’d be amazed if he’s training on the Thursday and even more so if he’s in the starting line-up on the Saturday lunchtime knowing ten Hag’s approach to these things.

The league cup game against Barnsley on the Tuesday, certain starter I like to think.

He will start, if he doesnt we are probably just sacrificing 3 more points

Call me crazy but I think it’s simply time to change formation and be more compact with a 3421 or 3412 or 343

Start A Onana, push him up play M Deligt, H Maguire, L Martinez, then tell Antony he has 2 or 3 games to prove himself at wing back and play Dalot/Masraoui right wing back Antony Left wing back to give us natural width, then Mainoo Eriksen with Bruno behind Rashford Garnaucho or drop Eriksen and pay Rashford, Garnaucho Amad all interchanging.

We need goals and we need to start seeing us dominate and keep teams in their own halves, this only happens with a high line and aggressive defending. Maguire and De Ligt will be huge threats from set pieces we need goals!

This has potential banana skin written all over it. Southampton will have all of the ball (in most games all season).

Can absolutely see us getting dragged around and impatient. If we don’t take the chances we make early, I can see us getting rolled.

A mate said this morning that Southampton are good at keeping the ball but doing nothing with it. If so, then I see ETH setting us up to counter, Saints will have 68% possession, we’ll go 2-0 up with a couple of scratchy goals, they’ll pull one back in injury time. 2-1 to us. We’ll see this as the start of a new chapter only to get spanked 3-0 by Palace.

On paper, we should win this 1-2. But with doubts creeping in about how much longer ETH will remain on the job, I can see the players being unsure of what they should be doing, as usual, and getting sucker punched for the defeat.

As far I know, there will be no Hojlund -- so no striker threat -- and it's very unlikely Ugarte will start, so expect more dodgy play out of the back that gives Southamption gilt edged chances. There's no reason to believe anything will change with Rashford. And there's no reason to believe that ETH will change his tactics. In short, the best we can hope for a scrappy 1-2 win but another defeat would not be a surprise.

If so, it will be interesting to see what INOES does about that.

I'm sure Russel Martin will be watching Man Utd/Liverpool replays after the Arne Slot comments & thinking maybe they have a chance.

Did you not hear EtH - he's not Harry Potter, he can't magically make Ugarte terrible overnight, it could take weeks to turn him from Europe's best DM into a headless chicken who charges aimlessly about the pitch whilst constantly giving the ball away.

You're right. Ten Hag likes to ease players in, and Ugarte hasn't had much training with the first team.

The problem is numbers. We have barely any options at all in midfield. Players like Casemiro and Eriksen are 'fit', but they're clearly not good enough to be starting right now except for cup games.

Collyer could deputise at six, but there is no way Casemiro can start there after his showing against Liverpool.

Who is manager of Southampton must be rubbing his hands and licking his lips at his good fortune of drawing United when we're in the state of decrepitude that we're in.

We can just hope and pray that we give Southampton a good game.

    2-2.

I agree that it's shit, but I fully expect Casemiro to start. He won't be going on international duty so will be training with Ten Hag and as you've said our other options are limited with Collyer being preferred to Eriksen on Sunday saying everything about the state of our options.

If we do the 424 gimmick again this game I might scream.

At this point would rather just play the double pivot/mid block system to save Mainoos legs as well as put Bruno in his best role. Because Bruno has sneakily been god awful so far and on merit couldn’t complain if he was benched (obviously would never happen).

Garnacho and Amad on the wings. Rasmus up top. Let’s see from there.
