Looking at the lineup prediction game, our squad does look very thin, not in terms of number of bodies, but in terms of real quality.

Although, tbf, of the leavers I think we are only going to miss Smalling & Herrera. Suggesting that our squad was already pretty thin.

I'm fairly confident the side will be

    De Gea
    AWB - Lindelof - Maguire - Young
    Pogba - McTominay
    Lingard - Mata - James
    Rashford

I reckon you're right. And if Lindelof and Maguire are on top of shit, we just might be able to hold on to a 0-0 draw.

Sorry -- still depressed about Palace

I'd hope that Ole will put his money where his mouth is and start Greenwood. He says he's trusting him to be one of his three main strikers this season so with Martial injured now's his chance. I'm somewhat confident that we will play the same team as the last two games, bar the obvious changes in Young for Shaw and Greenwood for Martial.

I'd rather Greenwood down the middle, James on the right and the Rash on the left, but I'm sure at various points in the game they will switch position anyway. The main question mark for me is how much longer do we give Jesse Lingard to produce from that no.10 role?

If Lingard is to be dropped, then do we go with Mata, Andreas or Matic? I don't think it will be Fred yet, but I would like to see him given a run of games in a midfield three. That last position in our squad is the hardest to fill, mostly because anyone who plays just doesn't offer anything.

I think that will be it. A small possibility Fred returns in a 4-3-3 but doubtful.

Young is not quite as disastrous on the left but Lindelof and Maguire will have a busy day, and Rashford is going to have to be properly on it. Mata and Lingard next to each other will be horrific viewing.

    What is the source?

    TEAM NEWS - United
And here’s the United team. No Mason Greenwood or Tahith Chong, as expected, while Angel Gomes captains the team and Brandon Williams plays.

There’s also no James Garner tonight. MEN Sport understands he is travelling to Southampton with the first team.

Woolston; O’Connor, Williams, Mengi, Ercolani; Galbraith, Levitt, Ramazani, Gomes, Traore; Elanga.

Weird. Gomes is either shite in training or there is something else between him and Ole that prevents Angel from playing...

Stephen Howson claimed that Gomes was quality in training when he watched him. Think Ole is not rushing Gomes into the PL but will play him the cup matches

Probably his size and that Ole wants to ease him in all things considered, like Sir Alex did in the past. Patience needed.

Garner in the squad for tomorrow.

    De Gea

    AWB Lindelof Maguire Young

    Garner
    Mctominay Pogba

    Greenwood Rashford James

    Possible?

Dunno that he'd start Garner, but I can definitely see him coming on at 60 or 75 minutes. Hopefully, Ole wouldn't stick him out there with 5 to go.

Rashford hasn't played CF during pre-season or this year and he would probably interchange better with Greenwood going down the center and James on the right side. Pereria played well last year against Soton from a central position. Soton's CMs usually have good games against United, like Romeu for example. Ward-Prowse has such a good delivery as well.

Ole this morning: "I'm trusting Anthony, Marcus and Mason to be our centre-forwards. We've got Chongy, Daniel James, Pereria - we've go loads of options." Mata isn't even in that sentence. Could go James - Rashford - Greenwood. Loads of excitement, but equally extremely unknown.

Poor Gomes doesn't get a mention.

We aren't going to throw the youth into a tough away game.
Why???? We need points, more chances with youth than Lingard or Mata.

It’s not just “youth”, they are already better than those

You have nothing to base that on at all. Ole sees him every day in training.

That could mean he's a #10 in Ole's eyes...which I believe everyone agrees is his best position. Regardless, he's an exciting threat with the ball, so seeing him in the attacking front line wherever (not center forward!) would be exciting to see for everyone.

International break comes next so if Gomes is able to train with United at Carrington, not really knowing his international duties, then it would be a positive going into the cups and then league for him.

We would be happy if Southampton started of couple of their best youth prospects against us.

I'd love to see Gomes getting a chance but I'd only expect Solskjaer to do that in desperation mode.

But it’s not about starting a youngster instead of Pogba, it’s sbout starting him instead of proven shite. We would be better off, not worse off

Surely more chance of getting a result with proven veterans like Mata in the team instead of unproven young lads?

Of course not. These “proven veterans” are proven weak footballers. Youth - unproven talents. If you play veterans, you get consistency (consistent garbage), if you play youth - there are various possibilities.

Reading fantasy football scout, they said about Greenwood, "starting away at Southampton may well be a big ask"

If it's a big ask to play against Southampton away, when we have Martial out, and with Rashford having mainly played wide, it's a bit worrying.

What would it be to put him in against the best 6-10 teams in the league?!

i would just put greenwood up top to get him in his most comfortable position, keep rash wide left, maybe james i guess wide right, and have a midfield 3 that allows pogba to push further forward.

    I know what you mean.

This is Lukaku's replacement, according to Ole.

If Southampton is a big ask, feck help us.

My guess is we have prepared all pre season with a 10 and we will play Mata lingard or gomes there until either it does well or until closer to Christmas with a decent sample size to look at it.

Anyone else starting to think Ole just doesn't fancy Gomes? Some managers just don't like certain players, look at Jose with Martial and Shaw.

Garner getting in the squad over him, when he's less ready and we are far more in need of attacking mids than we are defensive mids is particularly eye opening.
