Sorry but that is the worst line up I have seen all season. I hope im wrong and it works out though. How can Herrera not be playing? Plus its more like 6 at the back Valencia, Smalling, Mcnair, Rojo, Young, with Carrick just in front.

Herrera wasn't great against Stoke and LVG clearly doesn't trust the diamond away from home, it's not a huge surprise.

It's all well and good wanting to play on the counter but you need to have the players for it. A front five of Carrick, Fellaini, Mata, Rooney and RVP desperately lacks pace. We could have done with Wilson in that case.

Maybe it's 4-3-3 like this?

Interesting move by LvG. Looking to soak up pressure early on. We will have Cover for the wide players of Southampton. Carrick mata and Fellaini will have some work to control that midfield. Hopefully Valencia and young are not pinned back too much by the full backs. Team has the ability to go back 4 in a Jiffy, But i suspect it will be 3 at the back for the most part

I just find our football more attractive when Herrera is in the team, his influence seems to get the team playing the football I like to see. Hopefully Mata works hard and we don't miss Ander.

Those saying it'll revert to 4-4-2. No it won't. LVG won't play centre halves at full back (unless he has absolutely no option) and he won't play Valencia and Young as wingers

We should be able to boss that midfield no problem, and Alderweireld is a big miss for them at the back. Yoshida isn't great. The 4 wide players and the front two are a danger though.

Not keen on 3-5-2. It's not worked so far and we look worse defensively despite the extra CB.

If we were going to go with this formation, I would have preferred if carrick was one of the 3 CBs with Herrera in midfield, essentially a hybrid 3-5-2/diamond.
