Half their team might miss this through injury. If we can't do this lot at Wembley it'd be pretty pathetic.

    Depending on injuries,

    DDG/Smalling/Bailly/Blind/Pogba/Herrera/Carrick*/Mata/Martial/Ibra

If Carrick not fit then I suspect he will play Fellaini, would prefer a 4-2-3-1 with Mkhi in there instead.

The injuries to Carrick and Mkhitariyan, sad as they are for the players, should not affect us too much as we have very good options in both positions as well as much better players in general. And that situation in itself is evidence of the huge progress Mourinho has made this season.

I think our position in the league is a false: fast forward a month or so and I think we'll truly be in the fight for 2nd place. Which is probably a realistic assessment of where we are right now.

Add some new firepower in the summer and trim some more deadwood, and it will be business as usual from next season.
We don't have anyone playing anything like Mkhitaryan does, so he's a huge miss.

    I expect to start with a 433.

    DDG
    Valencia Bailly Smalling Blind
    Herrera Carrick Pogba
    Mata Ibra Martial

They are missing Van Dijk, Boufal and Austin.

We will probably be missing Jones and Mkhitaryan. I assume De Gea will be back?

    Summary: just about normal.

not sure he will start with Carrick.

Think we will go for it. Get a couple of goals. Then contain. He may come on last 30 minutes.

Yeah I don't reckon Carrick will start. Fellaini actually did alright against St Etienne so he might be in. Or maybe even Rashford/Mata/Martial behind Ibra, with Pogba and Herrera in a two, if we are feeling bold. My guess is Fellatio will start before the Rash, as in life.

Boufal could be available, Puel will decide tomorrow.

Would make no sense to play cunning Lingard ahead of both Fellatio and the Rash.

Nervous as hell for this. You would swear i was up in court for murder or something.

Always get nervous in these big games.

This is my prediction of the team.

    De Gea
    Valencia Bailly Rojo Blind
    Herrera Pogba
    Lindgard Mata Martial
    Zlatan

I expect Carrick and Bastain to come in later for Lindgard and Mata/Martial should we be up by 2 goals. Probabaly in the 60th.

    getting too detailed there ;)

I wonder if Bailly isn't about to be dropped.
Maybe, but if he drops players every time they make a mistake he'll end up with a team that doesn't trust themselves and doesn't feel they're backed by the manager. If it was becoming a trend, or was a performance issue i can understand that, but not at one bad game, that we didn't lose.

I think this will be much, much tougher than expected.

The fact that we played Sunday, Wednesday and now Sunday again - and at a heavy surface like Wembley may make us sluggish and mentally a little off the pace.

That said, we have more quality and it'll only take one moment of inspiration from Zlatan, Mata or Martial to put us in charge.

But I'm expecting a long afternoon.

I completely forgot we have a final to play on Sunday with all the recent events - Our Europa League Round of 16 draw and Ranieri sacking.

Why do so many think that Carrick will start? The last couple of matches have been with Herrera and Pogba and not a 3 midfield. Why would Mourinho change this now? Are Southampton expected to have a lot of possession in the midfield? I don't watch a lot of Southampton matches.

Now that Bailly is suspended in the EL wouldn't it be likely that Mourinho could bench him just to have a "fresher" partnership for the EL, Smalling-Rojo? Or is he going to use his best CB?

Now that Mkhitaryan is unfortunately going to miss the final I'm wondering if Young could get a chance? He's actually been quite good these last two matches against Blackburn and St. Etienne. So if one would go by form then he should get a chance. So the right side could be shared with Valencia, which one of them would be the RB and RW I don't know.

So wouldn't this lineup be good?

    DDG
    Valencia/Young Smalling Bailly/Rojo Blind
    Herrera Pogba
    Valencia/Young Mata Martial
    Ibra
Rashford has been really good as a sub and with this being final it would probably be good to use him as such. Rooney and Fellaini could also be good for this. Carrick or Schweinsteiger should only be used to "close" the match. Lingard will probably be used as a sub as well, but that no matter the score I think.

Start the best XI for every game and rotate key players as much as possible after 60 minutes. Utilyze BFS and Fellaini more later in games, to keep Pogba and Herrera fresh for the next fixture.
    Too much common sense @Raoul
(Slightly off-topic) As if the main purpose of playing those games was to finish them off with 11 not so tired players, no matter the result, and it isn't, is it? The purpose is to win them, except perhaps the Rostov away game. And to do that you will probably need Pogba and Herrera on the field till the final minutes, much more than Schweinsteiger or Fellaini, although the last one could push sometime due to his height and physicality. The common sense of both presupposes the coming games to be nothing more than a stroll in the park.

Bailly hasn't been the same after coming from the AFCON. Besides getting expelled in the last game without any need whatsoever, he started the Saint-Etienne home game completely out of focus, giving away several balls at the back in the first minutes. I love the player and think he's our best center-back, but he has to put his act together. I suspect that Jones, if (big if, I know) he's recovered, might get a chance here.

Yes I agree. I meant to say those players should be rotated when we have chance to do so. If we're winning, there's no point in tiring them any further when there's another game in a few days.

Maybe I'm remembering wrong, but when he returned he had good performances against Leicester and Watford...

He did, no doubt. But we have a fierce competition in center-backs, no one is a starter for sure this season. And it's a final…

It's a final and I think Jose will start with, in his opinion, best possible eleven. The only reason he'd do otherwise is if he maybe wanted one or two of those players to be subbed in second half to change the game. But he won't rest anyone or make sure he have a fresher partnership for later. But who knows.

If I remember correctly he seem to start Lingard in important games for some reason. I don't really agree with that but wouldn't surprise if he did that on Sunday.

    Predicted team:

    -------------------------------De Gea----------------------------
    Valencia------------Smalling---------Bailly-------------Blind--
    ------------------------------Carrick-------------------------------
    ---------------------Herrera----------Pogba----------------------
    ----------Mata----------------------------------------Rashford----
    ----------------------------Ibrahimovic---------------------------------

I think if we keep with the 4-2-3-1, Mata will stay on the right, with Lingard or Rooney coming into Mkhitaryan's spot. We went 4-2-3-1 in the second half against Saint-Etienne at Old Trafford and Lingard was the one playing behind Zlatan. I can't think of anyone else who would do that job, except the injured Rooney.

Southampton are good at keeping the ball. They play with atleast 3 central mids and sometimes even a diamond. Romeu and Ward-Prowse are in good nick as well.

So yes, we might need an extra body in central midfield. I'd go for Carrick over Fellaini.

Bailly should start imo. This is a cup final, which means the best available CB partnership should play. Let's keep the FA Cup for trying things out.

Young did well last match, but last match was almost a dead rubber when it started. In any case, he hasn't played enough this season to suddenly feature in a cup final.

My guess would be 4-3-3 with Mata replacing Micky. Subs Rash/Fellaini/Rooney/Lingard depending on situation.

Thanks for the info about Southampton. Let's hope that Carrick will be 100 % fit then. Can't wait for the final to start.
