Maybe McNair fits more into LVG's "philosophy".

I read he used to play in the nr 10 role. My guess is that he is a good ball playing defender. manutd.com says that he is a midfielder. Never watched him though.

I think it has more to do with Mata being pretty popular and master Wayne generally being disliked. Because Rojo is our left footed CB in this game. Rojo is also primarily a centre back.Another poor team selection from LVG. Thorpe should be miles ahead of McNair in the pecking order. Again picking 3 centre forwards when we need a more solid balanced team. An attack without any pace or width. Maddening
