It's hard to know from that team what the formation is, could be a back 4 or 3. Hoping for a back 4. Nice to see Blind back in the team. Looks a decent team though. I'm positive for today.

Good looking line up on paper. Will be interesting to see if Blind plays as a defender in a 5 or if we go for four at the back with him sitting next to Carrick.

Has Falcao managed to get himself injured?

Given LvG's obsession to play left footers on the left I think Blind as LCB is very probable. Would rather Carrick as central defender (in 3-5-2) and Blind ahead in midfield. Don't think it's 4-2-3-1.

    :nono:

Carrick won't be CB. He'll never play 3 right footers in the same back 3 if he has left footed options available.

You should know Van Gaal's idiosyncrasies by now.

If the left footed option was Rojo and not Blind, I'd have agreed. But with Blind, think he'l not move him to CB. Can very well be Carrick with Jones and Smalling on either side.

With regards to the back 3 or back 4 debate, I would think that Carrick or Blind will drop into the backline to collect the ball and start attacks when we have possession. But without possession I would expect both to shield and close the space in front of the centre-backs rather than either of them retreating to make a back 5.

    With the ball:

    -------Jones--Carrick--Smalling

    Valencia------Midfield---------------Shaw

    Without:

    Valencia---Jones---Smalling---Shaw
    -----------Carrick---Blind

    Could be 4-4-2

    ------------------DDGea------------------

    --Jones----Smalling--Blind------Shaw--

    --Valencia--Carrick-Rooney-----Di Maria-

    ---------------------------Mata--------------

    -------------------RVP-----------------------

Everyone should remember that Blind has been out for a while and may not be at his best. No doubt if he struggles the matchday thread may go into meltdown over it.

I can not believe Blind goes straight into the team after like 3 months injuried. Nevertheless, his industry has been severely missed in our midfield. More surprised he gets the nod over Herrera. Is it safe to say the latter is the new kagawa?

Falcao getting bench is also a surprise.
Not at all. Herrera does plenty defensively and has a pretty good output in terms of goals and assists and chances created. He's just competing with di maria, Mata, Rooney, falcao and van Persie as he is primarily attack minded and our defence is obviously a bit weak still.
Kagawa competed with young, Valencia, nani, Rooney, welbeck and rvp, not quite the same standard of quality and while I liked him, he's not as good as Herrera and did nowhere near as much when he plays. His problem was going missing while Herrera it's just he's not an automatic starter because of other world class players, though he's like the 12th man I guess, the first sub player who is on the edge of starting.

Funny how some people see it as a back three and others a back four. I must admit on first glance I thought four at the back. I really hope to see Blind and Carrick finally in the middle together.

It might be early to say, but I have not seen the reasons our manager team has overlooked Herrera beside my formulated opinion that they see him as light weight. A problem kagawa has faced in his time at United. His performances has more than earned him a place in our team.

Way to premature and I agree that his performances should have earned him a place in the team, something I could never say about Kagawa.

Exactly if LvG feels ADM or Mata are struggling he will be first replacement.

    Could be 4-4-2

I don't know how you have missed it but Moyes is no longer the manager of United.

    DDG
    Jones - Smalling
    Valencia ___Carrick____ Shaw
    Rooney - Blind
    Mata
    Van Persie - Di Maria

I like the look of that formation, but maybe i'd have it:-

    DDG
    Jones - Smalling
    Valencia ___Blind____ Shaw
    Mata - Carrick
    Di Maria
    Van Persie - Rooney

ONE DAY we will play with Di Maria, Herrera and Mata in MF/attacking MF and it will be brilliant.

    Evans dropped :D

How many years under Sir Alex we could guarantee what our starting line up was, these day's it's a case of pot luck on the starting eleven  :D

Can't tell what formation that is. Happy enough with the team though.

You know what I'm most happy about aside from all the attacking players today? Evans not starting. :D
That is the blessing. Not as surprised as some that Herrera isn't starting against this Southampton midfield. LvG will want players who are more likely to keep the ball, Ander just wants to push forward all the time. It is a great trait when you have a full strength defence, but can be risky when you haven't.

I talking in terms of being underused and how he is being incorporated by our management team, not in terms of abilities. We could easily drop Van Persie, Falcao or mata to incorporated him into our team, base of who is on form in those periods.

Their new lad Elia starts. I haven't seen him play for a couple of years. All I remember about him is that he's fast as hell. Is he any good these days?

I have always found him overrated. He is(was?) fast but selfish and not efficient. I hope he is still the same player I remember him to be.

"Where is Falcao" wave passed through or we are not still clear

Could be related to that Malanda incident perhaps?
I don't think so, Januzaj went straight into the Belgian NT whilst Malanda had featured in the U18s and U21s yet to be capped. Adnan has also been in the Man Utd team and youth set up - away from the Pro League - for quite a while.

Very strange to pick Wilson over Falcao on the bench. Wilson has been given so many chances this season and has contributed nothing in them.

Think this will be a tight game and hopefully we come out on top.

I reckon Di Maria up top with Rooney in midfield.
