I just want us to play well and show signs of being a functioning team with a clear direction, regardless of the opponents.

Having watched Liverpool's first two games under Slot, they like to dominate the ball, which will probably suit our game more.

Like City, I expect them to have the majority of ball, where we'll sit in a mid block and hit them on the counter.

Whoever starts, it's so important our wingers are productive on the counter, as I can imagine we'll have room to do so.

Would be nice to go into a game against Liverpool, City or Arsenal and not be big underdogs just once.

Well we can only do that when we actually demand possession based football, it’s never been the case.

Oh for once to be heading into this fixture again feeling confident.

We look terrible, they've left off from Klopp.

However, maybe we'll properly be up for it and surprise ourselves.

I feel like both times we've played them at OT under ETH I expected us to lose easily, but then we put in a decent performance.

    Liverpool 4/5
    Utd 11/4
    Draw 3/1
Lovely odds. I'm taking United on Asian Handicap depending on our line-up. Need to see Zirkzee up top, Mount on the wing instead of Rashford/Amad, and De Ligt ahead of Maguire.

    Onana
    Mazraoui De Ligt Martinez Dalot
    Casemiro Mainoo
    Garnacho Bruno Zirkzee Mount

I hope we don’t go with the 2 false nines. Apart from some nice interchanges between Bruno and Mount, we offered nothing potent up front. Zirkzee needs to start.

That's a pretty frightening stat. I wonder what our best is on record.
United had 87% pass completion rate against Brighton on Saturday. 83% was United's average in the Premier League last season.

Kevin de Bruyne said recently that he isn't a fan pass completion stats as he feels it stops players taking creative risks due to fear of interceptions.

    Not confident for this one.

We seem to only have any control over games if we play 4 central midfielders, and then have not much in attack. When we switch to 3 midfielders, we look far more open and it starts to look similar to last season's problems of teams just cutting through us.

Our X factor in games like this used to be Rashford's electric pace running in behind the opposition, but he's massively physically declined and we no longer seem capable of finding his runs like we used to.

We're also currently sat here with worse midfield options than we had last season. If we did manage to get a midfielder in time for the game he'll be on the bench anyway having not played in pre-season and will get a 15 minute cameo at most.

And Liverpool have started the season well.

On the positive side, quite often we can surprise everyone at Old Trafford in a big game. Garnacho may be able to replicate Rashford's strengths of running off the ball if we start him on the left.

    I'd go.

    Onana
    Mazraoui De Ligt Martinez Dalot
    Casemiro Mainoo
    Amad Bruno Garnacho
    Zirkzee

    Onana
    Maz-DeLigt-Martinez-Dalot
    Case-Mainoo
    Amad-Bruno-Garnacho
    Zirkzee
This is indeed our current best starting 11 and what Erik should do. Except he never does what he should

I won't be surprised if Maguire, Mount, and Rashford start again and am almost certain one of them three will

This feels very much like 2022 when we played them also in the third game, only difference is we didn't get pumped 4-0 at Brentford this time.
Liverpool also got off to a bad start that season, they drew their opening 2 games.

This time they're off to a good start unfortunately.

Yeah, that's a fair comment. Lindelof was either last season or the one before one of the most accurate passers of the ball. Says a lot.

It's vs Liverpool, a game where anything can happen. Too many fans freaked out over Brighton result. Everyone accepts we are going for top 4. That means you can expect to lose 8 to 10 games. We are pressing better and can't seriously be freaking out over every bad result.

Again good post. But the way we played against Brighton, (waiting for gaps, pressing hard, living on moments) is how we should be facing Liverpool. Hopefully it works this time, with better luck....

3-1 to us. Rashford, Bruno and Garnacho to score for us and Salah to score his customary goal due to our defense switching off.

    We.Just.Need.To.Take.Our.Effin.Chances.

and then not feck up at the back.

    apart from that...

hopefully weve learnt our lesson against Brighton about not messing up against a high line. Some composure on the pass and a bit more switched on when it comes to making runs and we should get in behind. and id love to see our strikers try and take it round Allison, he is brilliant at those one on ones where he charges out, but is vulnerable to being dribbled around, and then potentially conceeding a pen / being sent off. It just seems to be a skill that has gone out of the game.

Oh cop on.We don't look ' terrible' and they have played relegation fodder twice.
But for a freak offside we would be confident after a good away win. It's football, it's United/ Liverpool, any result is possible.

It is, as per last year. But we don't look anywhere near ready for the season. And hopefully this game isn't too soon.

Liverpool started the season well but they played against two very poor sides.
We played City and Brighton, looked quite good against City at times.

I think we will beat them, or at worst get a draw.

    I’ll go with 2-1 United.

I heard Gary Neville say before the Fulham game that ETH had said we weren't ready for the season. Extraordinary statement to make by ETH.

Why is it extraordinary? The consensus is that most teams aren’t. The Euros finished in mid-July and players were then given an extended break. Only 5 first team players reported for the start of preseason training.

Our last preseason match was against Liverpool and look at the lineup, there was still half the squad missing.

So how is it extraordinary? I’d like to know how you could feasibly be considered ready for the season under those circumstances?

I think we will win with a very gritty and dull performance. After the international break I'd expect to revert back to doing nothing in games, losing/drawing and being on the edge of nothing really. ETH has shown, in my opinion, he may not be the right guy.

We’ll probably win here. Although slots Liverpool look better defensively than Klopps did.

Would we have beat Brentford comfortably l? I’m not so sure. Footballs a weird game though. We will up our performance here and probably win or get a draw.

feck me, you’re setting yourself up to be disappointed asking for all that

A winnable game but we'll have to shithouse our way to it like our recent victories against City.

    Simple as that.

But beyond that, we look much more comfortable for the entire 90+ minutes defending and countering rather than pressing and praying all game. I understand that sitting against clubs like Fulham is difficult to justify but against clubs like City and Liverpool, opponents we've had some success against, countering is the way to go and makes the most of use of the pace merchant Rashford.

ETH is the only manager to state it. It's not something he should be admitting even if true. It's a self defeating statement in my opinion.
