Wayne Rooney hamstring strain keeping him out of today's match. To be assessed again on Monday before flight out to the Netherlands.

Will be funny if Fellaini plays an absolute blinder up front.

The depressing thing is Rooney will walk back into the team, even if Fellaini scores the perfect hattrick.

Yeah, Carrick and Scholes wasn't exactly Usain Bolt on coke
At least we had pace out wide in that side. Mata is a slug, Ander is mobile but hardly rapid, and Memphis rarely stretches the pitch with his pace.

LVG clearly going for experience with Carrick and Basti. Would think MS would be ideal for this game, we'll seem.

Surprised BFS starts after playing for Germany midweek, the rest is expected after the Rooney news.

Reminds me of when Fergie used to play Scholes/Carrick together away at Anfield, and they'd constantly get overrun.

LVG seems to have gone with experience for today, really hope it pays off, but my gut says its a big mistake :nervous:

It's different though. The reason Scholes and Carrick got overrun was because SAF would play with a 4-4-2 which demands mobility from both CM's since the wingers will constantly be up and down. With 4-2-3-1, Carrick and Bastian are CDM's, deeper positioning, closer to defence, Herrera drops back and it becomes a midfield three, hence less likely to be overrun.

the midfield selection makes perfect sense. Rooney is missing so the vice captain has to play if fit. Carrick. Earlier games have shown that Schneiderlin and Carrick are too similar and too negative. So If Carrick has to play then Morgan doesnt and Bastian gets the nod instead.

I feel like a midfield 2 of basti and Carrick is a mistake but I hope I'm wrong!

Carrick and Schweinsteiger will struggle. Carrick is old and Schweinsteiger is overweight. I see no reason to leave Schneiderlin out of this.

This thread seems to be all over the place or is it just me? Its not aligned properly.

Fellaini as a 9 would surely need pace around him. Fellaini up top and Mata on the wing is walking football.

The old age CM pairing scuppered my 11/11. I don't get it, Bastian played both of Germany's qualifiers, 90 minutes in them as well, to put him and Carrick in against that hard running Liverpool trio is risky, this game was ideal for Schneiderlin.

As for Fellaini up top, this could get ugly really quickly.

I have a really really bad feeling about this one now.

Why the feck does Lovren keep starting ahead of Sakho? Not that I'm complaining, but it's just laughable

I guess the logic behind the midfield being that Herrera will provide the legs? Also he doesn't push up as much as a second striker would, so he should be able to help out centrally more. Still would have preferred Schneiderlin, mind.

Hope we don't just pure hoof it, Belgium seem to get the best out of Fellaini because they're pretty unpredictable with their attacks and have a lot of variety of attacking approaches. Might be asking for a lot but I hope we're not so rigid today.
