Lukaku usually has a poor time at Anfield, let's hope he changes that this week. Hope his ankle is rested and strong.

Didn't realise our recent record against them was so good. 4 wins in the last 4 games. Feeling a bit more confident now. As long as we avoid defeat we should be satisfied but I think we can beat them.

Lukaku needs to turn up though (which he has done all season!)

It's not. We drew both games against them last year. It was under Van Gaal when we did the double over them 2 years in a row. But even then, we still lost to them in the Europa League. Definitely expecting Lukaku to score!

We have a horrible record with youse under Atkinson.
Sad that the naming of the match official is such a big deal solely on the basis of how incompetent they are.

Last year away to Chelsea in the Fa Cup game. He did half the Herrera man mark on hazard job before Herrera did it.

Wouldn't call that midfield. Chelsea played three up top, and we played three at the back. When the the wide forwards received the ball, the role of our defenders were to press them, in order to stop them from turning.

I was just going by the "Last 5 meetings" in the opening post! Yea, I think Lukaku will be WELL up for this one

Have they picked up any injuries over the international break? I see Brazil are still to play which won't be ideal given the travel distance/early Saturday kick-off. Any chance Firmino or Coutinho will play in that, or are Brazil just putting out second-strings now?

Right whats the damage - we only lost Fellaini over the break didn't we?

Lukaku isn't completely fit since before Palace after picking up a knock. Not sure how much he will be able to train before Saturday or if he'll play for Belgium midweek. Didn't Jones get withdrawn from England duty this past weekend? Then we'll have to see about who is traveling back and how they recover.

Martinez confirmed he will play for Belgium - looks to be alright!

Do you agree with him starting and playing an entire 90 mins? I would be okay for an hour or 30 mins for a run out, but they are qualified already.

You know, managers get a lot of stick for playing players when already qualified but to be honest I think the players want to play. They have a lot of passion for playing for their country. Personally though, I selfishly want him out of the squad and wrapped in bubble wrap before Liverpool

No disrespect to Lukaku but if after he watched Fellaini get injured, he still wants to go out and play a meaningless game then he is silly. If im in the form of my life and about to enter a period where I can prove all my doubters wrong (big games aplenty in the next month or 2) then I would not risk anything.

Lukaku's injury record is fantastic. I mean he rarely misses games due to injuries. He'll be fine.

You could say thats as much luck as it is conditioning though. You can't plan for a bad tackle.

Anyways lets hope he is fine after tonight.

What are we going to do with the midfield against Liverpool as we don't have three fit midfielders? We have to play three midfielders against Liverpool but we only have Herrera and Matic. We can't play a midfield three with Mika or Mata as they don't defend well enough. We will probably use Jones as a midfielder and promote Smalling to starting CB. That would probably get us a draw but that's pretty negative and definitely, qualifies as park the bus. It's times like this we should have purchased an extra quality midfielder. The extra midfielder would be needed next year anyway as Carrick is retiring or should be retiring so why not purchase the extra midfielder this year and integrate him into the squad and also provide for situations like this. If Fabinho was in the squad we wouldn't even miss Pogba and Fellaini over the next 4 to 6 weeks that they are going to be out injured.

There is also a question of their duty to their fans who travel far and wide, same for all teams, and pay a lot of money to watch a game. They want to see the best players on the pitch doing their thing.

I really look forward to this. This is probably the first time I'm gutted not to see Fellaini start though.

We'll see a typical away game from Mourinho's playbook. We're going to defend tight and keep the distances short. Matic and Herrera will be in the center of action whole game through. Considering the shaky defence of Pool, I'm pretty sure we'll score from set piece or a random cross. Fellaini would've been key element in this.

It will be all about crosses and counters. If we keep a clean sheet it's three points.

Key is not to concede early in the game. Then they will become enthusiastic and it may be quite difficult to deal with their counter attacks.

Guys I had a dream that both lukaku and Phil jones will score on Saturday, with jones scoring the winner :D:lol:

Former Liverpool player has a go at United's defence
John Aldridge playing to the gallery here with comments about Mourinho’s “defensive style” and United’s defensive record.

    He told the Liverpool Echo:

“We’ve seen some suggestions that United might come to Anfield to attack, that Mourinho might take the shackles off them and go for the throat.

“There is a 0% chance of that happening, trust me! It just isn’t in Mourinho’s make up. You look at the players he’s signed for United, and it tells its own story. They’re all six foot four, built like you-know-whats, and they all know how to mix it.

“Lukaku, [Eric] Bailly, [Nemanja] Matic, [Zlatan] Ibrahimovic – it’s clear what Mourinho wants; a powerful, physical team that can battle and scrap with anyone. That’s a challenge for Liverpool, and one they’ll have to overcome first and foremost. If they want to play, they’ll have to earn it.

“Despite that, I still see vulnerabilities in United’s defence. I know their record on paper is good, but they can be got at. [David] De Gea is a great keeper but he’s needed more than Mourinho would like, I’m sure.”

By the way, United’s defensive approach has yielded nine more goals this season in the Premier League than Liverpool’s “free flowing” approach.

United’s leaky defence has also conceded twice. Liverpool’s has let in 12.

    Good try, John.

    Like most, I've gone for:

    Martial Lukaku
    Mkhitaryan
    Young Matic Herrera Valencia
    Jones Smalling Bailly
    De Gea
Could likely be Rashford over Martial though.

John's right. Liverpool will dominate and smash us 3-0. We won't get a sniff.

Where'd you get that stat from? I recall drawing 0-0 at Anfield last season.
