I think we'll be good if we can survive the first 15mins unscathed.

Lukaku, Fellaini, and Herrera who's monumental for us on these large occasions are going to be the key.

Will he start? Or will we go with Lingard to give his full back extra support against their flyers?

Wouldn't be surprised to see Lingard start for his pace and work rate.

Bring Juan on just in time to score a stoppage time winner.

    No chance for Lingard.

Jose would go for Rashford over Lingard. Rashford has slightly lower work rate, but much much more potent going forward. Plus Rashford is on form. (this is Rashy vs Lingard, not Rashy vs Martial)

Well obviously Rashford is going to start. I'm not even debating that. I clearly mean the right hand side of the attack.

I think we usually just include PL games in this but yeah, the 0-0 at their place last season has been left out.

Lingard could play instead of Mkhitaryan, not Rashford. If Rashford plays too much on the England games, Martial could get ahead, specially if we play 3 at the back.

    Silly story...
I would be a regular on a streaming site, and last Saturday I noticed something strange had happened. After The Big Felli's first goal all the scousers vanished. That’s nothing new, I can hear the mutterings but it would be on this site. They have not ran away all season nor the last few years and they would be there for nearly ALL matches at some point other. One lad would argue that every goal United score no matter what the score, is offside. If he can get someone to bite. Another would find fault even if we were 6-0 up, how we'd be lucky or it was a pen or it wasn't, should a been a red or was never a red and so on all against us of course. But that’s not the strange bit. The strange bit was they never showed up/logged in for the liverpool game on Sunday.

I thought, cowards, wait till I see them next match.

But then on twitter the last few days after reading some comments, the penny finally dropped. The amount of liverpool fans who are saying, on form, we are going to beat them at a canter is not even funny. Add to that the interest from Bayern in Klopp, a bad transfer window, Coutinho wanting out. To even comparing the squads on international duty and how much easier we have it. Comparing the results in Moscow and not being able to beat The Toon with 2 extra days rest. They play Spurs away the week after us. It’s all getting a mention. There is a re-found sense of doom n gloom around anfiled with the realistic fear of them being 13 points off the top by October 21st.

For the first time since SAF retired the scousers have reason to be sick of the sight of us and avoiding us like the plague because they do not believe in their team or manager. I know there is some dyed in the wool die hards who will never admit. But that is the overwhelming consensus i am getting.

But all this means fcuk all if we don’t beat them! Which I expect we will.

Ahh yea he accidentially deleted 3 results not just the 2 europa league results.
    Makes sense.

I don't think there has ever been a time where we have gone into a match with Liverpool expecting to beat them. This is not it either IMO.
Will be a tough game. They will obviously press/run/harry like crazy, their energy at home might be the difference. I think the best we can get is a 1-1.

Yes i expect to win, they are playing crap and of course i know its football and anything can happen. Its, they are not at it. This season I'd be less weary of pool than i have been since SAF years. More down to their form then our positivity

I would not be anywhere near as confident against Spurs Chelsea or City away. Best we can get is 1-1? about 22% or there abouts agree with you on a draw. Im with the 68% ish who say we can win whether that be blind loyality or some method of logic based on form or gut feeling or whatever. And TBH thats not exactly wise to say we cant win when obviously we can win. SO i am going to be be a little cheeky and assume you mean, while you want to win you just see it being a draw and you'd be damn happy with the point.

I'd not be too unhappy with a point either i must also admit. But I do see them at a low ebb and 3 points is on offer.

    I hope Martial starts

Would go for a team like this:

    --------------DDG---------------
    Valencia---Jones--Bailly-----Young
    ---------------Matic---------------
    ---------Herrera--Fellaini--------
    Mata--------Lukaku--------Martial

An extra body in midfield for a game like this would be welcome, that is why I'd start with Herrera next to Fellaini and Matic. I think Martial has played a bit better than Rashford and so I think he should start ahead of him. I prefer Mata over Mkhitaryan for this simply because Mkhitaryan has been a bit poor in the last games and Mata has a good track record against Liverpool.

Bench: Romero, Lindelöf, Smalling, Carrick, Lingard, Rashford, Mkhitaryan

"Unscathed" is giving them too much respect, don't you think? I mean this isn't peak level Barca circa 2008-2012...

But yes, they're fast out of the blocks. We should be slightly cautious in our initial approach.

I was thinking this too, think it's very possible he starts.

    ------------------------------DDG---------------------------------
    Valencia----------Bailly-----------Jones---------------Young----
    ---------------------Herrera----Matic-----Fellaini---------------
    --Lingard--------------------------------------------Rashford--
    ----------------------------Lukaku-----------------------------------

Fellaini with license to join in as a target man when we have possession, turning our 4-3-3 into a 4-2-3-1.
Can see Mkhitaryan being dropped for this game.

I can see Mkhitaryan being dropped, definitely. He's a risky type of player in that he often tries things that sometimes don't work out and will normally result in losing the ball. I don't think that's going to be conducive to success at Anfield.

The return of the three man midfield will definitely make a return in my opinion. As long as we counter with purpose we should be fine. That defence of theirs is useless.

A draw would be a good result (if we manage to beat Spurs at home).

4 pts from Liverpool and Spurs and 5 pts from them and Chelsea away won't be bad.

Wouldn't mind if it ends like this for us. :D

    or this

Thought this one was going to be the Pallister 2 headers, and Cole header after James' flap at a cross.
Had forgotten this one until the Beckham free kick

Mata is a guaranteed starter, especially against L’Pool.
A guaranteed starter who didn't feature in the corresponding away game and didn't even start the home game last season?

The first half is guaranteed to be a snooze with an extra early start after an international break

I think both teams will be really nervy to start with. Be interesting to see who settles quicker and starts playing their football first.

The fans should be up for it regardless so that may spur them on early. If we can get put their backline under some quick pressure, I think we can impose ourselves. Hopefully we don't hesitate too much. Everyone you'd expect to start should fully grasp the importance but I'd love for Rashford to lead the charge.

I’ll put money on it that Liverpool will settle straight away. Recently, In big games like this, they fly out of the blocks and I don’t doubt they’ll do the same this time.

High intensity, high pace, and direct game. Given the playing style of both teams, game like this is won in the midfield.

Herrera's performance will have a big and direct impact on the result. His passion, determination and energy is vital in this kind of big game. He will show us why he was the fans' favourite last year.

Both teams have a lot to lose.

Liverpool's chances to have a good league campaign would take a serious hit if they lost that game. The start of the season would be catastrophic for them.

At the same time, this is the first game that United play vs a top 6 team and a bad result could shake the confidence that the team is way better than last season and ready to compete for the title.

Still Liverpool will probably be more afraid of losing the game than United.

Agree. Even against City, they were the better team in the first 20-25 mins. City's goal was totally against the run of play. But we need to play exactly like that. Soak up the pressure initially and wait for their inevitable mistakes and hit them on the counter.

They've been poor all season and we've been solid and yet... I worry.

Even when we were the best side in Europe under Fergie we still couldn't go there and outplay them sometimes. They just raise their game for us at Anfield.

Actually, I think the best I've seen us play at Anfield recently was the LvG match and we still only won that by 1 goal.

So a win would be fantastic and a draw would be disappointing but not the end of the world.

Liverpool could have lost the previous 10 games, they would still turn up. I'm far from confident.

This has always been my fear. However bad Liverpool are doing they always turn up at Anfield and give it a go. Would be great if United come out and silence the crowd with a couple of early goals :D
