Yep, and for all we know it Rooney will perform. :nervous:

I hope he does if he plays. What I object to is that we have to play or risk other players playing in unpreferred or less optimal positions and getting dropped like a bad habit when they don't set the world alight yet Rooney gets to have 12 games of abject performances but as long as in 1 of them he does something its ok.

I can't say he offers more. He offers something different yes but two assists in the first game was what he has offered. Second game he didn't offer much but a shot on goal.

And yes, stats are stupid but it does show Rooney has done more too.

so we are talking 2 games where Martial has done at least as much as Rooney in their respective positions and what is being asked of them. So for arguments sake, if we say they are on par with their performances Rooney gets the Nod just because. It seems Rooney can't loose. Play badly he gets the Nod. Play Ok even though others are better he gets the nod. Play equally well as others, he gets the nod. The dices are loaded, my friend.

He hasn't played bad though has he. He has actually played better than he has in a long time.

When, last season, have you last seen a Rooney goal one game then assist in the following game?

If he performed terribly in the first 2 games I would not judge him on that alone. It would not be smart to say he has been good either. You may argue that he has been "adequate" at best. I take it in the context of the last 3 seasons. I am not going to judge a player based on 2 games it would be silly to do so either in a positive or negative light in order to predict his trajectory for the rest of the season.

His overall contribution has not been great. 1 goal headed goal from 3 yards out from a scuffed shot outside the box and a one on one where he looked like he was running in quicksand and fluffed the finish. He had 1 Assist where he was unchallenged in yards of space and crossed it into the box which was met by Zlatan who managed to leap like a beast and generate his own power on it to carry it into the goal.

I guess it depends on what you define as bad. For me the lack of pace, losing the ball , constantly slowing down our attack and losing the initiative is not desirable and is allot closer to the opposite of the word "good" if we look at it that way. I think (and the vast majority would agree) we have 2 better options of who one is on the bench and the other is pushed out wide to accommodate.

This is just crazy. Do you watch the games? How on gods green earth can you say he hasn't played bad? He's been fecking shite. Just because last week he wasn't *as* shite, doesn't mean he was by any stretch of the imagination good. Your standards really are low if you think he hasn't been bad.

    Thank's Carlosp.

I have to say I am disappointed in the Schweinsteiger situation. I think last season he was easily better than the midfield options we had. Very strange indeed. I would think he would have been a great compliment with his passing intelligence to accompany Pogba in front of him or beside him World cup winning captain etc...

Well he has been scoring and had an assist. So it's not bad. I have said already, if he has nothing to contribute i.e. he can't pass properly, can't defend the ball, can't run with the ball and can't score or assist then I expect Mourinho to drop him. Mourinho can have no sentiments and this is a tough job where results matter.

That said, Wayne is contributing, he has scored and assisted even though he isn't playing well and we know Mourinho has always wanted to manage him and I am sure Mourinho knows that Rooney needs a few games to get going. So until Rooney stops scoring and assisting, then I don't see Mourinho dropping Rooney, even though Rooney is not playing well(i.e. he isn't defending the ball well and lots of his passes are truly awful).

Mourinho also thought he could revive Falcao, but that clearly turned out to be pointless.

    Yes.
But he didn't play in most of the games.
In some instances, Falcao never even made the bench.

Rooney is different. He is playing all games. Not only that, but he has been made Captain!!!

Rooney has regressed but is still far better than Falcao is now.

Rooney clearly does not look 100%. But he has contributed. He as usual has started the season slowly.
I think we have lots of games coming up that he will be given enough games so there is no question of his selection. But as Jose has said, he brings more than just his role as a forward to the team. Mourinho's comments with regards to Bastian and the lads who have gone on loan prove he is focused on one thing. Making United the top team again.
Very focused and he has a vision. His comments about things coming together that we do not see was the best thing I heard.
Some nice words about Phelan too.

He can't run anymore and he can't deal with being pressed. He also started in two of our worst defeats last year Arsenal 3-0 and Wolfsburg 3-2 and he was so shite in the Wolfsburg game Van Gaal subbed him off and then made a point in his post-match to say how shite he was. He was also subbed off in the PSV game at home in the 55th minute and at HT in the game in Moscow because he was shite.

He also can not be counted on at all because of injuries. He played only 65 minutes after Christmas (Jan to May), 0 starts and 4 sub appearances.

So what the news on players starting tomorrow? Any changes he mentioned in the press conference?

There were 10 other players playing in those games. There were players who played far worse than him or at least as bad. He had an impact injury, hardly his fault. Other players have also been injured and have been allowed to get fit again. So back to square one.

Agree with all of that. Also, Pogba is nailed on to start in a midfield two. He needs a partner who is able to cover a lot of ground defensively to give him attacking freedom. Schweinsteiger is not capable of being that partner anymore.
Sad it didn't work out but there's no point in holding onto players for sentimental reasons.

    This is the problem.
Rooney is judged on the, "well, he wasn't as shite as he was last week." scale.

LVG and Hodgson put their complete faith in Rooney.
He let down LVG by scoring only 8 league goals last season (I'm shocked that nobody else on this forum isn't mentioning this).
He also let down Hodgson, by putting in average/poor performances, in the Euros.
It's strange that Rooney is getting managers sacked, but they keep playing him.

For the record, I think he has done, "okay" in our first 2 games, so I have no real complaints about his inclusion in tomorrow's game.

It amazes me how anybody could want Bastian to stay at our club.
He is a legend...but not for our club.
Bayern wouldn't play Rooney in their team, why should we play Bastian?

agreed. I don't understand why people still want him shoe-horned into the team. He's not fit enough to play PL football. He literally waddles around the pitch like a big fat duck

Agree. But tbh I don't even understand the sentimental reasons people are arguing. He played half a season with the team and was mostly bad. He isn't a club legend. He got paid 7-8m last season for half a season of play. So he made out pretty good there. People complaining are complaining because of the name.

Simply put it was Carrick or Schweinsteiger. Last season Van Gaal intention was Schweinsteiger over Carrick, gave Schweinsteiger 200k wage and didn't renew Carrick. This season Jose decided he wanted the guy who has been with the club a decade over the guy who played half a season and didn't exactly show a commitment to the club.

if he thinks he can come to the MLS and just use his reputation, he is in for a rude awakening.

Mourinho has done him a favour. Bastian should accept he needs to pull his socks up and if he cannot do that, hang up his boots and enjoy following his wife around on the tennis circuit.

Although it should have been neither, really.

And that is the thing though. I am not judging Rooney on the, "well, he wasn't as shite as he was last week" scale but more on a, "Hey, he is scoring and assisting, which is good for the team at the end of the day" scale. So no matter how bad he plays, as long as he scores and assists then I believe Mourinho will keep playing him.

And I can't see Mourinho not keeping him on if he is scoring and assisting. We all saw how stubborn Mourinho was with Ivanovic at Chelsea and Ivanovic who was not even defending properly and he was still playing. At least Rooney is contributing.

Mkhitaryan will probably start right? And Mata will be on the bench unfortunately. Would be a brilliant call if Mourinho played both Mata and Mkhitaryan and probably also what the fans want.

Who said that? Mata is a starter for now.

Currently in the south of France. They most likely do not have skysports here however which channel here in France could possibly show the game? Any help appreciated, desperate to watch the game..

Get wifi and watch it on your phone? Or walk to the nearest town/village or set of bars, there is usually an English pub at least that will show it. Usually you will see a board outside saying the fixtures they are showing there etc

I'll give that a try, thanks!

Is there any tactical reason why Mourinho should start Mkhitaryan instead of Mata, regarding Hull's left fullback or something? Mourinho mentioned he picked the latter because he thought Mata could be useful to play between the lines of Bounemouth. I also think he's been giving him minutes so he doesn't request a transfer (like when at Chelsea), and now that the transfer season is almost over and Mata was even called to the Spain national team, he might be make a more freer decision. We all know Mkhitaryan's the better player, but when is he going to show it?

I've got Mkhitaryan over Mata. Everyone else the same but I have a feeling Mkhitaryan won't start until Rooney is dropped. Bonkers.

    2-1 to United. Zlatan x2

Whilst agree that Schweinsteiger was very poor last year, I'd be interested to see how he does alongside the energetic Pogba. I'd rather use Carrick instead of BS though.

Anyway, on topic: Can see us scoring a few here, but Hull have made a great start and will be up for this.

    4-2 to us.
