They have, but the back four is still suspect aerially from crosses - Shane Long for instance looked a real threat at times for Southampton, and they were playing a diamond and didn't even cross that much. Smalling is our best defender and will help in that respect massively.

    Oh right. Yea, fair enough.

I don't think it's a good idea to bring Smalling in before the national break at least. Blind and Bailly have a perfect understanding right now which Smalling may or may not have. Not worth risking imo. Abel Hernandez is decent in the air but we should still be able to handle him and I doubt Hull will be attacking much anyway. Mkhitaryan is possible but I really just don't see any reason to replace Mata. I thought he was better against Southampton than against Bournemouth and I think people are only saying the opposite because he scored against Bournemouth. Genuinely think we'll see the same 11 unless there's an injury.

Too bad Rooney is completely undroppable.
To be fair to Rooney and Mourinho, Rooney has scored in the first game and made an assist in the second so he is delivering. That said his touches have been bad and his positioning is also not as it should be example the first game where he should have had at least three goals(one from the delightful flying Ibra back heel pass).

Still, Rooney is contributing to the teams success at this moment hence most likely why Mourinho won't be dropping him.

I can see Mkhitaryan and the others get their chances once more games come our way from September onwards. It's still a week inbetween games at the moment so can't see Mourinho changing the team much.

I actually think Rashford might get chosen over Martial for this game. Mouringho won't do wholesale changes but I can see at least one change and I would think that is Martial at this moment. Even Rooney has offered more than Martial has at the moment. One game break for Martial should do him good.

No they weren't. Actually they dealt with most aerial crosses from what I remember. Southampton had one shot on target, a poor driving shot from Long that De Gea saved comfortably, shows how much of a threat Southampton were.

We won 68% of the aerial duels. Only two headers were contested in the box. One won by Daley over Long and the other lost by Fellaini vs van Dijk.

Mourinho may change one or two players for this game but I'm not that convinced.

He may play Smalling with Bailly just to compete with their potential long balls, and he can drop Martial for Mhkitaryan to have a better technical control of the game, but I'm not really sure about that. As much as I would love to see Mkhitaryan start a game, I just think that with a proper preparation Martial will be back again.

We have good issues in terms of selection. Hull will probably try to counter us. I though that when we lost the ball only Fellaini protected the back four and if we are outnumbered in these transitions we can have issues, so we must be solid tomorrow and being strong offensively

I hope this is not a potential banana skin fixture. United need to win this and be level on points when we meet City on the 10th of Sept.

How have Hull not given Mike Phelan the job on a permanent basis yet? I imagine they'll sit back and try to do to us what they did to Leicester, I'm not expecting a goal-fest.

Could be the reason is if the club is sold, the new owners might want a different manager. However they would be stupid not to stay with Phelan.

We can afford to drop Rooney/Mata for this game.

We won't see Rooney dropped. If SirAlex has Mourinho's ear then Mou will know that Wayne needs games to get better. Sir Alex said the same on numerous occasions and so i expect Mourinho will play Rooney until he improves OR he plays badly.

Currently Rooney is doing ok, a goal the first game and an assist the second.

So I don't expect Rooney to be dropped.

If Sir Alex did indeed have Mourinho's ear then I am guessing Rooney would be available for transfer as he wanted him sold.

Yeah but there's every chance that Mourinho has wanted to work with Rooney as he has said so many a time. Do you think Sir Alex would want to help or not? Mourinho has said that he has had discussions with Sir Alex, I wouldn't put it past Sir Alex to offer advice.

Also, Mourinho would have been familiar with Sir Alex's tactics, style and thoughts throughout the years and would have picked up, as we have, that Sir Alex has said as much about Rooney needing games to get fit.

Not hard to realise that if Mourinho wants to utilise Wayne, that he would have to play him consistantly.

Mourinho also thought he could revive Falcao, but that clearly turned out to be pointless. I think he will give him this year to see if he can get back to his old self, but if he doesn't show improvement he will be gone next summer.

I really hope he can break the goal scoring record this year, that way he's got no real reason to stay any longer.

I'd like to see Mkhitaryan from the start.

The way Martial is playing at this moment, I wouldn't mind seeing Rashford or Mkhitaryan replacing Martial for this game.

And yes, Mkhitaryan has played on the left before.

    I'd sooner just bin Wayne.

This is the sad thing. Martial has not done anything bad enough to deserve being dropped. I think people just want to see Mkhitaryan and since we know Rooney is unlikely to be the fall guy we have started to look at other options which would allow Mkhitaryan to come in.

To be fair, Martial hasn't been on to it. Last season he started with a bang and contributed a lot(attacking wise) during games. I know he had two assists in the Bournemouth game but only had one shot at goal in the second as his only contribution. Unfortunately Wayne has done slightly more than Martial at this moment.

It would be nice to see Rashford and Mkhitaryan on and yes Mkhitaryan could replace Mata but he and Rashford could play on the other side too.

    @Kag, @carlosp, @Adam-Utd

Do we think that Jose will risk falling short this season in order to not "rock the boat" with Rooney and any perceived influence in the dressing room?

Or do we think that Jose actually believes Rooney offers more than the players we clearly feel are better equipped to challenge for the title?

I don't think Mourinho will have a problem 'Rocking the boat'. If Rooney doesn't perform, I am sure that Mourinho will drop him.

That said Rooney has performed, so would he drop Rooney after scoring and an assist? I think not.

I disagree with that. 2 Assists and an actual contribution to the attack forcing the opponents to backtrack trumps it for me. Martial plays in a different position so his role is to be a threat and supply assists, even though he is not at his lively best right now he still looks better than Rooney.

I hope you are right. I don't want any player to be carried this season. I just don't get why the Rooney can get away with it so often in the past. Lets see how things pan out this season.

I can't say he offers more. He offers something different yes but two assists in the first game was what he has offered. Second game he didn't offer much but a shot on goal.

And yes, stats are stupid but it does show Rooney has done more too.
