Soonish, and Bailly. I reckon Mourinho might have originally had plans to pair the two of them, but Blind has (deservedly) won him over and it makes more sense to always put Blind with one of the other two.

I couldn't disagree more. Bailly has been a beast so far, and pairing him with Smalling would give us two big, strong CBs for the first time since Vidic/Rio.

Blind has been fine so far, but then again we've played two crap teams. He started last season strong and then became a liability at CB. He's not big or strong enough to play CB in the EPL effectively.

Blind was better than smalling last season, especially as the season went on. Comfortably our best defender.

Bailly has been a beast, but does look a little rash at times. I'd be very wary of partnering him with an out of practice Smalling.

Plus Blind deserves to play, on current form.

Why does Smalling have to play at all cost?

The duo are performing well, so I don't see this need people have to play Smalling at the expense of either player.

If Smalling is to come back in, this if anything is the type of game i'd expect him to come in for to deal with the aerial threat of Hull.

«I know that Mickey is a super player, who I know for sure is going to succeed,” Jose commented. “I am not in a hurry to say that he plays in every game from the beginning just to show everyone how good he is. / It is difficult to leave him out at the moment admittedly, but if Juan Mata is on the bench then you are telling me that I want to kick him out. […] The reality is that we have a very good squad and every weekend we are going to be here [discussing the players who are not in the team].»

Just like everyone is suggesting it's been a veeery long time since I've anticipated watching Utd games (before Mou's appointment I mean). I just can't wait and because I woke up so early its making the wait even more agonizing. It's great to feel this way again, makes all the difference for a fan.

This continued criticism of Blind gets on my nerves. Just because he isn't your textbook CB, doesn't make him any less of a player suited for the position. What defines a good player? In my opinion it's the ability to perform consistently at a level that your team requires. Blind has been doing that for quite some time now, and against the so called bigger oppositions, he's been up to the mark as well. I have no problem with either of the three CBs starting for us, mind you, but to criticise the man without him even heeding it, makes absolutely zero sense to me. Also, I've mentioned this in the Newbies but I guess it's worth repeating, having a beast like Bailly who's still rowdy (as has been evident), it really helps him bed in the league by having a calming influence like Daley Blind by his side, who, by the way, can and has found excellent passes in field from the defence!

I'm sorry for deviating from the MatchDay discussion.
    2-0 to United!

If Smalling comes in, it should be for Bailly not Blind. Blind is so underrated, it's unbelievable. Also, due to his lack of height, as the lads mentioned on FullTimeDEVILS, on opposition goal kicks, Fellaini takes up the left channel in front of Blind, in order to win the aerial battles.

I agree. The people criticising Blind are the same people criticising Valencia for not being a 'proper' RB/CB

Why do every United-fan feel so different in the beginning of this season compared to the beginning of Moyes and Van Gaals first seasons? Didn't both managers do pretty well the two first league-matches? And i mean Bournemouth and Southampton is not top teams really. Is it because the way you play in general is much better? Is it because of the transfers? Or why does it feel so much better now than it did after two matches with Moyes and Van Gaal?

I agree, even though the three of them are different I'd say Blind offers something the two others don't when it comes to passing, positioning, build up from the back and reading the play. Switching between Bailly and Smalling makes more sense imo.

Blind is probably our smartest & most forwardly-driven player we have in the team Sig..

Poggers is in town too though!

I cant speak for everyone but in my opinion i think our squad has been hugely underrated in the last couple of years because poor managers have made the players drop from their top level. We were in need of a couple more world class stars which we have got in Pogba and Zlatan and i was always of the opinion that as soon as we got a top manager all our players could add an extra 10% to their performances. Within just two games(three counting the shield) its already evident that LVGs slow, tumescent and negative football has been removed and in its place we look functional and machine like, not dissimilar to Mourinho teams of the past. But more than that the team looks like it has room to grow as they become more accustomed to playing with each other. This is just the beginning of Utd getting back to the top of football and i think the reality is both fans and opposition can sense it.

I think Moyes always started on the back foot in fairness - majority on here were probably convinced he was a shit appointment (I was, laughably when I look back, not one of them at the time). But there was the dithering in the transfer market and underwhelming signing of fellaini (who's done wel to continue fighting at the club) etc, so there was never this buzz. Added to that, SAF just retired.

I remember there being a bit of a buzz at LvG's first season in fairness. Most acknowledged he was a big enough name manager. They acknowledged his track record and he was sort of decisive in the transfer market. We signed AdM for a British record. Falcao joined us and LvG had just had a very good WC....all in all iirc, there was a major buzz. This was without even considering the relief of Moyes being sacked. As the season progressed, more and more lost a bit hope and it was really during his second season where he drained the life out of us.

So yeah, every LvG presser at the start of his first season - read the threads on here. You'd hear people praising him, over analysing his every word (positively), saying the British media are shit scared of him and he's very SAF like in that regard.

Fast forward a season and a bit later, and LvG's reign was a nightmare. His conferences were slaughtered on here & majority just wanted him gone, at all costs.

He broke the spirit of most fans, if not the players. Serving up tumescent, 1 shot on target shit, game after game. Asking us to lower expectations.

So yea, all things considered, the signings in the transfer market. The manager. The buzz seemingly in squad. Pogba/Ibra/Bailly/Miki....charity shield win. 6/6 points. And the LvG gone factor....it's clear to see the buzz. But it was not much different under LvG, even though a few never wanted possession football.

I have huge expectations for this match following the good performance against Southampton, so it's going be a hard fought 1-2 victory then.

I'll speak for myself here. At the very beginning of moyse's first season I was calmly optimistic. I knew he was no fergie but was confident in the strong endorsement SAF gave him (I'll put that at a 6/7 happiness scale). I don't really recall how the pre-season made me feel. At the beginning of LVG's first season, I was super relieved we had sacked moyes and were getting an experienced/ respected coach who had won all over Europe. I was also very excited about Di maria (7.5 happiness scale). Now with Mourinho I feel super relived that the nightmare that was LVG's football is over, and really excited about the World class signings and the winning/ confidence factor that seems to have returned to Utd (8.5 happiness scale and frankly would be more if these past seasons hadn't taught me to show restraint in my optimism)

So to answer your question its different mainly because of the confidence that Mou at his best can bring to a club as well as the confidence of WC talent Ibra/Pog/miki/ De gea. We'll have to wait and see how long it will last. hopefully for years.

Never change a winning back four - especially in the middle.

The back 5 are key to the flow of our game.

Dave to Bailly / Blind / Tony / Shaw - then to Poggers or Micki (he has to start) & then it's bloody well game on - "who let the dogs out?"

First 3 matches, Moyes: WWD (Moyes got progressively worse with time and it seemed that he had no master plan or philosophy, in place. It felt that he was making it up as he went along)
First 3 matches, LVG: LDL (LVG had a philosophy, which targeted 4th/5th place, with boring football, in both seasons)
First 3 matches, Jose: WWW (Jose, he is focussed on winning and is delivering the results he promised, while playing direct, attacking football).

The pressers were totally irrelevant buddy.
    The on-pitch performances meant everything.
In his first season, LVG had a clear plan and for 80% of the season, we were working towards this plan. Then in the last 6 games, we scored 3 goals.
The following season, we continued exactly where we left off, scoring few goals and playing risk averse football.
People grumbled, but because we got 1-0 results, we accepted it.
Then came the December when we lost/drew every game.
We reached a stage where we were getting poor results AND were boring to watch. Moreover, there was no more philosophy because it had already been implemented and was yielding dire results on the pitch. That was the last straw for many.

The results are what ultimately dictate if a fan wants a manager sacked...not the press conference. And if Jose plays in December, where we lose/draw every match, I can bet that there will be many posts in here saying, "Jose Out!"

Oh shit. I thought the game would start 17:30. I sat down and was so exited to watch the game start in ten minutes. :(

Aye, I never said the pressers determined anything? Other than just signifying the general mood/buzz around his appointment?

I agree with u. Results and style will dictate the support a manager gets. Simply used the pressers as a measure of the "buzz" around this place when LvG was appointed.

Thought Mkhitaryan would start over Mata, but Jose really doesn't like changing the team

Pogba to score his first goal for us today. You (may have) heard here first people! : )

Fellaini to stay in the team he's been great so far under Jose.

I think this will be a pretty confortable game once we get our noses in front. Run outs for rashford and miki t and another 3 points in the bag please. I'm already enjoying this season so much, especially after the last few years! To the pub! : )

I don't do comfortable wins since SAF retired so a draw or hard fought 2-1 win
