Yes, it seems that Juve and Bayern realised that De Ligt is not good enough for them so why is he good enough for us ?
Because EtH wanted him at all costs??
He got most of the players that he wanted but most of them were/are a big disappointment - he's hard headed !!
    Because he's Dutch?

ETH is playing for a sack, it’s clear
I don't want to believe this kind of reasoning, but that central lineup really is inexplicable. It's not like the other CBs are injured. He even rested Ugarte midweek. I don't get it.

Effort, competency and hopefullly a decent showing. It's all I ask. Get this game done, and then we can wrap things up

What a bad lineup built for disaster.

    two slow CBs
    no defensive midfielder
Rashford and Garna are too similar in play style
Yes we should have instead had Usain Bolt and (add other sprinter name here) at the back.
Martinez and De Ligt aren't exactly fast and both in pretty average form themselves. Maguire was absolutely nailed to start, it's the Evans decision that is risky.

I'm wondering how we keep thinking we can play Eriksen and Mainoo as a 2.
    Thought Ugarte was the answer!

Ugarte is only in the door. Hojlund was always going to be first choice once fit and De Ligt has played a lot since he's come in and been a mixed bag really.

    I don't think it's all that strange.
Ugarte needs to be playing to get up to speed with the league and teammates. All this chopping and changing doesn’t help anyone.

Fine 4-1 then. I couldn’t care what the score line is. More pressing issue is we need him gone. It does more harm LT if he is here no matter how many goals we score today or even if we get 3 points.

I hate to think like that, but in this case I'm feeling the pull of that logic.

Love Evans and hes been surprisingly useful since he came back but its just damning that in the 24/25 season we're still wheeling him out for a tough away Premier league game. Seems like a metaphor for where we are as a club.

Mmmm....Surely he's not so much better than Bruno at that, that it justifies selection.
He's wayyy better. And he's also in the team for the passing you mentioned. You underestimate how crap Bruno has been at set pieces for a long time.

I hate him so much. Cannot wait until he's gone.
Good advice from a very old person, never use the word hate especially on a person. Something I learned many decades ago. However I do feel your passion and I fully understand you.

It's only a game at the end of the day and I'm in a confused state like the the rest of us here. There is light at the end of the tunnel and just try to enjoy the game mate and try to ignore the manager on this match. It's the players who have the final say today I feel.

Rasmus got off the mark vs Villa last year and went into that fine scoring run. Really hope he can do the same today...bit he will be feeding of scraps no doubt. Mainoo is going to have to be on top form to quell a wave of Villa attacks.

Ugarte needs to be playing to get up to speed with the league and teammates. All this chopping and changing doesn’t help anyone.
There is only going to be one spot cause he never drops Bruno or Mainoo. He has a hard on for Eriksrn cause he scored 2 against Barnsley so there is no spot for Ugarte.

Evans against Watkins with Eriksen ‘shielding’ him :wenger:
Can only think we intend to sit soon deep there's no space for Watkins.
But in that case you'd think we go with our actual defensive mid or mids.

Still looks like he has a cement foot, dont' really want to thorw Ugarte in against these guys.

Bruno’s corners will go down as a highlight reel of how to hit the first defender very time. Expect for the odd times he tries to over complicate it with a short one that doesnt even get to the box.

Is Mount injured again. I know he missed games midweek due to concussion protocol. Does today still come under that time scale?

It's a light weight midfield but with McGinn, Onana and Ramsey missing for them, I think the danger is getting overrun in midfield is less. Barkley and Tielemans are good players but don't see them physically overpowering us.

We haven’t sat back in 2.5 he has been here so why start now? He is dumb enough to tell the team to play the same way no matter the personnel.

This is a weird game. Win and we got 3 points away against top a 5 team. Lose, ETH gets sacked. Win win for the fan.

The last two times we tried to play on counter in the league we started with Rashford and Garnacho(cause pace ftw!!) and got utterly spanked against Liverpool and Tottenham.

Our half "decent" performances came when we were set up with high press and forcing opponents into mistakes. If we are again sitting deep with no pressing at all then this will be another Tottenham game where we will be under siege right from the get go.

The Villa players must be looking at that line up and thinking WTF ?
    Is this a friendly?

It seems the Maguire & Evans setup means we are playing deep/low block and compact formation, with an idea of having big players (Maguire, Evans, Hojlund) to defend or attack set pieces and fast counters hende Eriksen who can launch through one touch passes, he is a terrible manager no questions about that but he's not stupid to play a CB pairing of slow tankers in high line defense and pressing high.

A few things you are clearly dismissing

-Juve wanted him to stay. De Ligt made it clear however that he wouldn't renew his contract, so Juve sold him early to not let him leave for a free, or be in a situation where they have to sell him for cheaper because there's only 1 year left on his contract

-I'm pretty sure he started around 90-95% of the games for Bayern that he was available for. Both under Tuchel and Nagelsmann. Bayern mostly sold him because they wanted to clear their wage bill, and de Ligt (along with Mazraoui) was one of the most sellable assets they had from their list of high earners

-Ashworth apparently really likes de Ligt and wanted to sign him for Newcastle previously

-De Ligt has been a long-term target for United since 2018/19, years before we appointed ten Hag

I'm sure ten Hag was glad to reunite with him, but let's not act like de Ligt hasn't been one of the highest profile CCBs around since basically the age of 19. Chelsea also wanted to sign him from Juventus 2 years ago. PSG were interested this summer alongside United. I'm pretty sure Barcelona also wanted him several times in the last 5 years.

There is only going to be one spot cause he never drops Bruno or Mainoo. He has a hard on for Eriksrn cause he scored 2 against Barnsley so there is no spot for Ugarte.
Well as we”ve just bought him and we were happy to let Eriksen go in the summer ETHs short sightedness is a thing of beauty.

Should be Mainoo, Ugarte and Eriksen IF he really wants to play Eriksen.

He's actually gone and picked the same team that came back for 2 nil to beat Villa 3-2 last season is what he's done.

Apart from those who've left the club. Maguire comes in for Varane and Mazroui for AWB.

Fielding Leicester’s 2017/18 central defensive partnership in 2024/25.

    Says it all really.

Still looks like he has a cement foot, dont' really want to thorw Ugarte in against these guys.
We aren’t in a position to pick and choose who plays and when, he should be picking his first 11 and sticking with it to try and turn this shit show around.

Maguire, Evans? Is he actually mad?
Probably he wants to play low block and counters, it's not that mad, if the team stays compact then it can prevent conceding goals, doesn't mean it guarantees anything aside from defensive solidity.

Evans and Maguire up against Watkins feels like it could be a bit of a match up problem. I get wanting to switch the CB, but is Lindelof not fit to start ahead of Evans?

This argument is so ridiculous. Bayern are five times better than us. Their rejects are twice as good as any player we have. Not good enough for an elite club does not mean they're not good enough for us. We are not an elite top club anymore, we have to build our way up and there is a reason we can't attract the best players in the world.
But we're striving to get back to being a top elite club.
