People rightly worried we'll get overrun in midfield but a sign of how bad our recruitment has been is that we could have had it ourselves for nothing (Barkley and Tielemans).

    Horrific recruitment.
Do you really, really believe that Barkley and Tielemans would have looked any better than Ugarte, Mainoo, Casemiro, Bruno and Mount in our midfield?

It comes down to tactics, not recruitment.

Why is Bruno playing? Isnt he suspended after the red card against Spurs?
    Has been appealed successfully.

Lineup is a bit discouraging. If the plan is to stay compact and wait for opportunities to hit them on the break then ok, that might work, it did in the early stages of the match against Porto as well. If something else is the plan, this could end up very badly. McGinn, Onana and Ramsey out for Villa though, I guess that is a good thing as all of them would have created big challenges to our midfield

We had lots of talented players and sold most of them for nothing
Okay, but your initial point seemed to be that De Ligt was sold because he wasn't good.
If you then argue that United, who are currently below the level of a team like Bayern can sell good players then your point doesn't really make any sense. Being sold has no bearing on whether or not he's a good player.

So this is the team EtH chooses to die with. Alright, let the games begin. Wow my line-ups predictions scores have gone to pot. Can't with for this inept coach to get lost from our club.

The summer's must sign, the leader extraordinaré and the top 3 CB's in the world benched for Harry and Sally at Villa Park....you couldn't make this shit up.
A signing that most of us had reservations over due to his slowness and injury record. What has changed about our clown show recruitment strategy really? Yoro is the only exciting player we brought in and of course he immediately got injured.

Well, at least he’s not being players’ favourite. Martinez has been poor this season, while de Ligt was poor vs Spurs and Porto. I can only think one reason that he benched both because they didn’t perform.

Is that the sack line up does he know he's gone so stubbornly picked that 11.
Evans Maguire if Onana passes out from the back were fecked . He has to go long today and defend deep imo with that 11.. we see at 4pm how he's has done

346m worth of ETH signings sat on the bench

    Defence change is rotation apparently

EtH saying on Viaplay he felt they had full control and dominated for big periods of the game in Portugal. Rarely seen Schmeichel that confused listening to that.

If thats true it shows how far we have fell since the likes of Rio Vidic Stam Bruce etc

No, not really. Maguire's been one of the best CBs in the league ever since his last 1-2 Leicester seasons.

Seems like we are playing deep defensive line and gonna concede possession and control, for defensive solidity and fast counters, he's desperate.
As i said earlier; he thinks (and i think that too) that draw is keeping him on the job. So, he is playing on a draw.

The only thing you can see with this team is perhaps he is going to park the bus and hit on the break with counters. This then goes against his 'process' and trusting it

Do you really, really believe that Barkley and Tielemans would have looked any better than Ugarte, Mainoo, Casemiro, Bruno and Mount in our midfield?

It comes down to tactics, not recruitment.
Probably not. I'd say Tielemans is a better passer than any of them though. More highlighting the terrible waste of resources.

They wouldn't be worse but we'd have £200m to invest elsewhere. They're also missing Kamara, another we could had for free instead of Casemiro.

Going forward yes, defensively probably the same

This is why in the short term at least, I'm prepared to see how new signings look if we make a change.

I'm pretty much of the belief no-one will look decent consistently the way he sets us up regardless of position.

We'll look alright on the ball at times today and will be dangerous with our pace up front. But we'll also be at risk of conceding every single time we lose the ball up the pitch.

Let’s get it over with. When is the international break?

    Bruno again!

Olen started doing this at the end of his tenure. Absolute wildcard line ups.

Man's gone in the week for sure when INEOS see £150m of their money sat on the bench
Just came to say this, the lineup has got a whiff of players he can still trust rather than outright quality, just like at the end of Ole's reign.

The midfield and the wide men don’t scream park the bus to me.

It’s part of the problem that every lineup seems like a mash up of ideas. Rather than committing to a single one

Playing both Evans and Maguire is not smart at all unless we are planning to defend in a low block.

If we play the usual Ten Hag way and gaps appear, then we are fecked because their forward line is pacy and will have direct runs against our slow CBs.

Evans, I feel sorry for the lad. He accepted another contract to play some League Cup and to act as a role model in the dressing room. Now he has to play away at Villa Park, against a team flying at the moment. I hate EtH for stuff like this. Evans is a rarity, a Fergie player. He should be handled with care, put on a pedistal and shown to the others. Not playing today!

Feels like the dutch bast*rd does this to prove something.

The suffering is nearly over, lads. Just one more humiliation to go and we're done.

    Hahahahahaha!

Maguire and Evans in central defence, Eriksen in midfield. What could possibly go wrong?

    That lineup is ridiculous.

A midfield three of Ugarte, Casemiro and Mainoo with the instruction that two sit in front of the defence at all times is what was required. Instead we get this.

Fernandes shouldn’t even be in the team if he’s finally dropping underperforming players.

Villa will walk through that midfield today.

Okay, but your initial point seemed to be that De Ligt was sold because he wasn't good.

Yes, it seems that Juve and Bayern realised that De Ligt is not good enough for them so why is he good enough for us ?
Because EtH wanted him at all costs??
He got most of the players that he wanted but most of them were/are a big disappointment - he's hard headed !!

Maybe it’s a good thing Maguire scored. If not he would have started with Martinez and De Ligt.

This may be the slowest 11 we’ve ever started with.

6-0 incoming. Though we may score if it’s open I Guess.

Well, at least he’s not being players’ favourite. Martinez has been poor this season, while de Ligt was poor vs Spurs and Porto. I can only think one reason that he benched both because they didn’t perform.
Which would make sense if there weren't plenty of players in poor form for much longer periods who were also benched. Took forever to bench Antony and he never takes Bruno out.
Would've taken Martinez out for Maguire personally because he's been way off this season.

So starting with the centre back pairing that finished the game against Porto. Mainoo not on the squad for that game is fit to start today?

Not sure about dropping Amad to the bench, he's one of the few United players that doesn't give the ball away cheaply. When signed Ten Hag said Ugarte would take many weeks to get up to speed, it will take longer now by having him sit out games..

Do we know he has a veto? Where from?

Ten Hag himself said he had a veto before his contract was extended. And all the reports when that extension happened noted that he retained that veto.

Ah yes, a midfield three of Bruno, Eriksen and Mainoo against Villa. Big brain move by ten Hag. Every United fan and non-United fan can see that it doesn't work, but of course he predictably goes against the lineup that makes sense, especially because certain players keep getting rewarded more play time after poor performances and should deservedly be benched.

I would agree. No point evaluating any of our players until we get a proper coach.

We could go round and round in circles arguing exactly how good these players are, but our PPG over the last 19 games (half a season!) would have us finish about 14th/15th...that's ludicrous, absolutely criminal.

Not sure what msg is sent across when a serial underperformer in Bruno is never dropped but others are

The only thing you can see with this team is perhaps he is going to park the bus and hit on the break with counters. This then goes against his 'process' and trusting it

Agreed, that is the only scenario under which starting Maguire and Evans against a team as good as this makes any kind of sense.

Then again, if that's the plan, why start Eriksen? Well, there's the passing for counters obviously, but on the whole he is not an asset in that situation.
