Some love for the Pastor! You love to see it! (Or at least I do)
Cant agree with sell DVB or loan Garner again though. They both need to show what they can do this season. Make or break. Next summer is the time to make a judgement on them.
Fair enough, I generally don't rate donny much, but have hope for Garner. My point is that our midfield isn't perfect, but isn't that bad. Donny isn't much use as a sub imo, and he'll never be enough to start, so would rather sell him and bring in Frenkie or bennacer, and in that case it's just smarter to loan out Garner so he gets game time.

City went through exactly this last summer with Harry Kane, and they got away with little to no criticism.
Nah, bad comparison. Tottenham refused to sell the player. It would be the same if Spurs were trying to get rid of Kane all summer.

And Kane stayed at spurs on half the wages, playing as a DM

Given that we have absolutely no depth for the front 3, that to me is the #1, priority right now. But there is no dream signing like Frenkie for midfield, that's why I see Frenkie as #1. But i do think we've already improved our midfield balance and build up play. Obviously Ten Hag alone is huge, but Martinez will be a big difference, and Eriksen as well.
Based on the test matches? Interesting. To be honest, I didn't see much of improvement already, yes we seem to be a bit more courageous with passing and not as seemingly afraid of possession and there were a few attacking moves that looked like football in 2022 but I thought I shouldn't overestimate that given the character of the matches. I thought we were really bad early 2nd half against Villa. Really discouraged me to be honest. What was your thought on that?

Also just want to note - don't lump Fred in with McTominay as some mediocre player. He's a very good midfielder and has repeatedly showed it! Yes ideally we would sell Donny, loan out Garner, being in a partner for Fred, have Eriksen and Bruno compete and strengthen the front 3 as well. Can't all happen though, or is unlikely. At the end of the day though, it's just about having a squad that the manager feels can achieve what he wants this season. It was never going to be a 1 window rebuild. So if ten hag feels like he is happy enough with the midfielders we have if he can't get Frenkie, then so be it. Our midfield is fine to get top 4 provided we get depth in attack, as i think ten Hag will make a big difference. Frenkie is a player who I think can turn us into title challengers much quicker than anticipated, that's why ten hag is going all out for him.
No need to sell Fred to me, already a fan ^^ But he has his flaws, undoubtedly and I find it pretty interesting of ETH to name him to be capable of playing the anchor role, that most of us think, would then go to FDJ. I mean, Fred and FDJ have completely different skillsets, what kind of role is that?!

I also can't understand people being unwilling to offer players a chance. They play for man united. If the manager feels they have a role to play, then they have a role to play. There are no ifs, ors, buts about it. Ten Hag is the most important man at the club right now and we need to back him and trust his judgement. He will be judged on how he manages the squad and his performances, so there shouldn't be a big outrage at his decision as long as he's doing well on the pitch for us.
I know where you are coming from. Impatience is a very limited good these days. And believe me, my skepticism doesn't originate from that. It is just that we have seen it so many times, players get a clean slate with a new manager, because, lets be honest, it is pretty easy to do. You don't have to sell all your squad, it is easy to communicate and who knows, one or the other might impress. I get that. But some of those players don't have certain qualities. And without them, they will lack output. And even if a manager certainly can have an effect on things, I don't think he can bridge the deepest abysses. I believe in ETH, I think he can create something. But it will take time and you won't get time, when there is no progress to be seen in any way. I am worried, that he relies on a group of players who have shown to be unreliable.

Just got back from the England game and traipsed through 20 odd pages, you nutters

Anyway, if we can’t get Frenkie, we should get Keira Walsh

So just trying to catch up at the end of the day - seems like a lot of new posts but not a lot of actual news?

Seems that latest noise from Barca is that Frenkie is now going to take a huge wage cut to stay and his team have led us on to get to this point?

Is that the gist of it?

That’s what comes with being the most supported club in the World, it aint going away with a cup win or two.
Yeah it won't go away of course. But success brings confidence to a team. It forms a backbone. It will create players you can rely on, players who play a certain way. Just look at Liverpool, it is the best example of that - it seems so easy for them, to bring in a new piece. Because all the pieces around are strong, one new piece isn't creating instability. So while we certainly won't get the degree of pressure to zero - lets not act as if there wasn't a difference in pressure when we introduced for example Johnny Evans or when we introduce Dalot, Laird or Garner today.

Yep. Barca used us to lower his wage.

Nah, the news is he's considering a pay cut, but it's still unlikely that he'll take it. A reliable source on tour with Barca has said a departure is possible with United being the only option (or most likely?) On the table. Not sure how to read it, others will know better.

Aside from that, not much. Nothing from any of the English journos

No doubt they’re much better teams than us, but I don’t see why that matters when we’re discussing them chasing after players for long time just for them to miss out. If you mean they don’t need the players as much as we do, that is true, but we also have to back the manager and his vision, especially since we practically have completely new staff starting from scratch. I agree the situation is not ideal, but we really can’t completely come to correct conclusions until we see clear evidence.

Its perfectly fine to chase the right player even if it takes a bit longer (=more than one summer), but this can't be an excuse for another underwhelming season. If EtH and the management think its a good idea to go into the season with McFred in midfield, its up to them to make it work and if it falls apart its their fault. United is a freaking rich club and there can't be any excuses for not being competitive.

Agreed, with Fred, Eriksen and Bruno we have some very good options. If we could get a De Jong, or develop someone to play alonside Fred, could certainly play some good football with those.

I guess, this shows a major difference in our perspective on things, which will then lead to me feeling different actions needed in a much more urgent way than you: I see Eriksen as a backup for Bruno and thats it. Don't think, he is capable of being relied on to be more than an option. Have no real hopes for Donny, only thing I could imagine is him being tried as some sort of false nine, making runs. And with Garner, I don't really see an extraordinary talent. He'll probably go on to become a good PL player, but I don't see a top player in there. Against PL opposition he's going to see his limits quickly.

For the record, thats not me saying, I'm right, you're wrong. It is just me saying that is how I see things and thats why I feel a bit more urged to do something than you ^^

Getting farcical now. At first I thought we wouldn't stay keen if he hadn't indicated he wanted to come here.

But now it seems like he doesn't want to, and will only come as a last resort.

ETH, Murtough and Arnold will have a lot to answer for if they spent the entire transfer window chasing a player who doesn't want to join us.

I’m fine if the manager thinks he’s got something to develop. As I say, I’ve seen SAF flog Kanchelskis, Hughes and Ince in one Summer and replace them with some lads called Beckham, Butt & Scholes. Everyone of us to a man/woman would’ve called him an absolute fool, but turned out that good managers, more often than not, make good decisions that we simply cannot foresee.

I’ve also seen a Summer we brought in Pogba, Zlatan and Miki and finish out of the top 4, same for Sancho, Varane & Ronaldo.

A player or two won’t be the magic answer, the manager will.
Dont forget replacing Ronaldo with Valencia, Roy Keane with no one. That didnt go so well. Wish it was that simple.

Something's happening. My Muppet sense is tingling.

Anyone know if we pulled out of the deal and FDJ refused to take paycut at Barca, can Barca still afford to keep him or they need to pull another lever?

They - I gather - won't be able to register all their new shiny players.

I do wonder if Frenkie will be more tempted to join if we impress in our first couple of games this season? A shame our third game is against Pool though.
