After Falcao??

There has never been an attacking player that old who has come to the Prem and done well. He's thirty five! Don't compare him to Cantona who would have retired five years before when he left United.
You used to claim our midfield was perfectly fine because we had a 39 year old Giggs and a 37 year old Scholes in it.

Cantona had retired four seasons before how old Zlatan currently is.

I like how he says he's read about him in the papers. Obviously hasn't seen him.

You missed the point - its not about when Cantona retired, its about his influence that Schmeichel is alluding that Zlatan would provide.

So many silly posts to respond to i don't even know where to start.. Someone saying it reminded him of shoehorning in strikers (Falcao/RvP/Rooney vs Martial/Zlatan/Rashford). Haha ye, it's not as if the former is a combination of 3 slow central strikers and the latter has two pacey players that have both played wingers this season. Martial especially looking like a natural LW. Rashford can be rotated as backup ST or even play as a starter on the right wing. We should sign a RW, though.

MG. If Zlatan wanted to stay, he would have. PSG's best player ever doesn't have to beg for a contract. He simply wanted a new challenge.
Yep. He's done it many a time, we're just his next choice of club and I'm well chuffed about that if it happens. He's still a top, top player, a physical freak like Ronnie.

We're going to win the league next year, the numbers don't lie. Anywhere Zlatan goes, a league title follows. Add in Mourinho and a couple more signings and we are golden!

How many in Zlatan's class has arrived in the PL at that age?

He is refering to that he read the rumors about Zlatan to United in the papers. Of course he has seen him!

Jose and Zlatan???...Let's just sign Suarez so we can have the full set of d***heads.

I think it's the perfect signing in terms of Rashford's future, he has it all for a young striker and is almost good enough to lead the line himself, I'd rather we signed a short term striker or none at all. You won't get better than Ibra on a short term deal. I just hope he doesn't have guaranteed playing time.

Agreed 100%. The confidence and swag of playing alongside Ibra would be immense for both Martial and Rashford.

We need leaders. I mean Carrick is our vice captain, that says it all. We have no leaders and no balls in this team.

I genuinely think, and I promise I'm not wumming, I genuinely think this may be one of the worst transfers I've ever seen if we sign him.
Why not wait at least 6 months for him to play here first before thinking that?

He's not even near Zlatan's class though but he did fine here.

True, and beyond that, we would almost surely be getting Ibra on a one year with an option for a 2nd, which is basically more or less like a glorified loan or a Tevez style rental.

a) He's on a free

b) He scored 50 goals last season. Almost more than the rest of our squad put together.

c) He's Ibrahimović. If it was Kevin Kilbane, I might understand

Exactly, and I find it fun that anyone can complain about this potential signing when we had trouble scoring goals all season. Zlatan is still, at the age of 34, one of the top strikers in the world. He will be a fantastic signing for us, the best signing we have made since de Gea (or RvP for 2012/13).

At least five years late. Underwhelmed, but I still harbor some hope that Zlatan can actually make a difference at 35. He's the consummate professional in terms of taking care of himself, so I reckon there's a slight chance.

More likely he'll end up doing half decent, and with Mourinho's aversion to rotation Rashford will suffer a lack of minutes as a result of his arrival.

After Bebe, Djemba², Kleberson, Zaha and Memphis? Maybe.

I was quite disappointing by his time here at the time to be honest... only because I was hoping he was going to score a goal a game :D

But yeah, he did alright.

If he's coming in, which is pretty much a certainty, our technical level has just taken a leap. We've now got a consummate centre-forward who will play others in all day and occupy two centre-backs all by himself.

Martial and a speedy, tricky RW either side of him and a proper converter of chances behind, and we're going to be incredibly potent as an attacking force.

The CL is irrelevant to us, so Ibra's record in it is redundant. In the here-and-now, he is a huge signing, pivotal, in fact. It's up to us to supplement the attack and midfield to optimise both his game and the rest as a collective.

Rooney in behind him isn't a problem as long as the flanks, at both points (FB and WF), have pace to burn. Shaw, Martial, other and other on the other side has the hallmarks of a scintillating attack.

When you think about the teams we couldn't beat.....he will make a big difference. This is a non brainer. Yes there are other options but I think we've taken into consideration who we have coming through and how that can benefit them. Hopefully we can confirm it in a day or two. His age isn't a problem.

People talking about the CL but as been pointed, next season our main focus will be League and Europa League - and cups. So it don't matter. I think (if we played to attack), he would do well against Bournemouth. Norwich. Newcastle. Etc....And these people forget, we will probably buy other players too. So how can we be disappointed when the transfer windows not even opened?

In reply to the bolded part. I don't say that it's similar to the ridiculous RvP/Falcao/Rooney situation, because the squad is naturally more balanced now than it was then, and Zlatan is a target man who can create and score.

I'm not even against signing him (I said about 30 pages back that he could have that Cantona type effect). I'm only against signing him if he's the only striker we intend to sign. In other words, he's good (sometimes great), but he's very old for a striker. We shouldn't throw all our eggs in one basket here.

As for the PSG thing. Maybe, but it seems to me like PSG would have put up a bit more fight if they really, really wanted to keep him. Their squad is insanely good, so perhaps he's a player they can afford to jettison.

I was against the idea of zlatan at 1st but I am coming round to the idea

We need a striker. Rashford cannot play every game

If they can get these two to share the role for one season I am all for it

If we need pace, trickery and poaching throw Rash in. If we need strengh, world class finishing and leadership we have Ibra. Both bring totally different traits to the table.

I thought the thread title was taking the mickey... turns out there actually is a newspaper called "De Telegraaf"

I'm not 100 per cent convinced this will work, like most things it's a gamble but he does bring a lot of quality, experience and leadership. I can see him being used to how Drogba was used in his 2nd spell at Chelsea.

I think he is the kind of player that COULD flourish on the OT stage, in the same way, but without probably hitting the same heights, as Cantona. He is a maverick, OK he was poor against City in the CL, but he was worse against United for Inter in 08/09.
He is a Man United kind of player, maybe a bit old but he could still have an impact.
