David Gill #MUTV exclusive: "Momentous day for the club, the fans and the whole football world. We knew this day would come and we have been preparing for that. Board will take council from Sir Alex and Sir Bobby on new appointment. The new manager will have to have experience in both England and European competitions. Working with Sir Alex has been the highlight of my career."

He chopped a huge chunk of names off the list with that one.

Thats suggests that no one is actually 'lined up' and that they will now start working on it?

David Gill "the new manager will have to have experience in both England and European competitions"

From Twitter. Did he say this in his interview to MUTV right now? If true, then surely rules out Moyes.

This rules out Moyes  And Klopp :(

That man who has that experience must be Jose. Or Wenger. Or Ancelotti. Or AVB. Probably Jose.

I think you're kidding yourself somewhat. I'm sure Gill counts the Europa league as European experience.

Whether is counts as 'good' Eurpoean experience is another matter tbh.

He didnt say Uefa Champions League he said European Competitors so of course Moyes counts.

Have Everton even been in Europe in recent years? I hope Gill didn't count Europa as experience!

It's Mourinho or Moyes I think, one way to make yourself stronger to prevent your rivals from getting stronger, Mourinho would do that.

My preference by a mile is Pep Guardiola, but that ship has sailed. David Moyes is a fine manager but I think it would be a huge gamble to hire him. He is completely untested at the highest level of club management, plus he replaces the greatest club manager in the history of British football. The thought of it unsettles me to be honest. This is the biggest decision in the modern history of Manchester United, get it wrong and it could be a huge embarrassment to the club. The decision should not be clouded by nostalgia, it should be firmly grounded in reality....who is going to deliver what the club requires?

Mourinho will deliver trophies to United....he delivers trophies wherever he goes.....and in reality that is all that truly matters when all is said and done, the size of the cabinet.

The issues with Moyes are;

Can he handle the intense pressure and scrutiny in succeeding Ferguson?
Can he continue the success Ferguson has maintained?
Would he hold the ultimate respect from his playing staff?
Would he wear a training kit or a fitted suit on the touchline?
Will he want to bring Gibson back to Old Trafford?

Benitez is it then.

Where did he say Massive experience ?

He doesn't. Look I don't want Moyes, I need to think positively, stop pissing all over my thought processes :(

Rules out Moyes for sure does it not?

Not really. Champions League qualifying round, UEFA cup and Europa League are all European competitions.

Gill makes it sound like it's not done yet though, which is interesting.

Once Dortmund win the CL Klopp will have as much experience of football in England as is needed

I have it say, getting Mourinho would be worth it for the Chelsea fans reactions alone. Yesterday they were probably all still certain he'd be going back there.

Plans have been in place for a long time but remained "in the drawer"

...it's Sven Goran Eriksson.

Hmmmm

If that's true then it cuts the list considerably.

Jesus we are not seriously counting these as "experience" are we? Sad times :(

United are in the result business if we like it or not ,so it makes sense to get a manager with a good track record in the CL rather than someone who dipped their big toe in a europeon cup competition.

Some of you utd fans don't live in the real world do you. Yes... the europa league IS european experience...

It's not just all about the champions league you know :nono:

I don't think this is the sort of job you apply for! I wouldn't mind Wenger though.

I wouldn't be so sure. I remember reading that Mourinho applied for the Barcelona job in 2008. His presentation contained ideas for the following season, including appointing Pep Guardiola as his assistant manager.

I really don't think when someone goes out of their way to mention the requirement of "European experience" they would be referring to the odd unsuccessful jaunt in the UEFA cup..
