Everything points to someone the club have made some sort of agreement with a fair while ago. The rumours about Moyes coming in as an assistant to SAF make sense in that light: Either Moyes works for a year as Fergie's second-in-command OR he takes over the shop right away with Fergie as a director looming in the background. Whether to take one last year at the helm or not is what Fergie has been considering since the league was wrapped up.

What worries me isn't Moyes' lack of trophies. It's rather the "looming" aspect: What role exactly will Fergie play in the seasons to come? It could be very difficult for the new man to have someone of Fergie's stature casting a shadow over him from behind the stage. On the other hand it could work splendidly in a transition phase: We essentially continue as before, same method, same backroom staff, Moyes as an extension of Fergie, simply carrying on along the same tracks. No revolution, in other words - and given our present status in the game we hardly need a revolution, do we?

Mourinho or Klopp would be my first choice. Klopp for style and youth development, JM for success, proven pedigree and ability to manage top talent and ego's.

Carlo Ancelotti would be my 2nd choice. Very good manager, very underrated.

And anyone BUT David Moyes. No CL experience, No experience at a Top Club, No experience managing big players and ego's, No trophies, No experience at working with big budgets and targeting top talents.

Moyes success is largely by put Fellaini as attacking midfielder, hoof it to him, let him elbowing opponents, and score goals.

I mean, we are dreaming of doing Dortmund or Bayern way. Surely Everton is in no way ever remind you of those two team.

Indeed.

One of the reason I am pro-Moyes is that I think he'll come in without a huge turnaround in staff. I can't imagine we'll entertain any idea of dismissing United coaching staff and hiring Everton's.

With Mourinho I think it would be different.

SAF has always made a point of the longevity of not just himself but his staff, it would really be a shock for the likes of Welbeck to stop working with people he's known since a young boy.

Whoever comes needs to keep the staff relatively stable, it would be very bad I feel if a manager comes in and the likes of Rene etc. are moved out when they've played such a big part.

That's the worry I'd have with Mourinho coming in. He always does things his own way, as he has the confidence to do it. Keeping most of the backroom staff would help stabilise the transition, even if just for a year and introduce their own staff and give them more power bit by bit. But I'd never see Mourinho doing this as he has carried the same staff he had from Porto with him to each club.

Pretty sure that no club could begrudge their manager wanting to go to United. Its quite funny that in a summer where Guardiola and Mourinho are moving on its likely we'll have Moyes. We'll see how it goes though, im all behind it.

Shocked and disgusted that Phelan isn't on the poll.

Someone else doesn't do justice for him.

Pellegrini and Ancelotti should be in the frame IMO.

feck this. This is like the worst transfer window ever.

Mourinho is leaving at the end of the season. Maybe that's one of the reasons Fergie retired now because he would otherwise go to Chelsea and be unenviable for another 2-3 years at least?

I think this is the reason as well. The timing.

Not at all.

I'm not just going to act like an idiot because I don't like a rumour put out there by Sky.

You don't have to be "the best United fan in the world" or a "Top Red" to support Moyes if he's the next United manager. Just not an idiot.

Everyone will support him because we all support United. I can understand why people might be a little worried about his lack of winning pedigree.

I dont think this is a spur of the moment thing. Fergie would have being working on this in the background with the board. I dont think Mourinho had any baring on his retirement.

Both short term journeymen, who work with Sporting Director's wherever they go.

They are more coaches. Not managers.

As much as I would love Klopp to be the new manager I doubt he will leave Dortmund at this time.

So it's either Mourinho, who will most likely leave at the end of the season or it's Moyes who could be a favorite because he has shown that he can work at a club for a long time and do good work.

Solskjaer please. Understands our club, the traditions, would be respected by the players, wouldn't be a circus, beloved by the fans and has that determination and winning mentality.

We don't need someone to rebuild us from scratch - just to keep us steady and motivate the excellent players we have while enjoying full fan support and slowly starting to take us in his own direction.

BREAKING.Negotiations between new MUFC manager and their club to end contract "amicably" and "imminently".

Surely can't be Moyes? His contract ends in a few weeks anyway!

jesus christ, stan collymore wouldnt know where the front fecking door is at Old Trafford never mind whats going on behind it.

Judging my the poll, all be it a small sample the added pressure of Moyes coming seems to be counter productive. I'm not totally against Moyes, but he's not my preferred choice but some people are totally anti-Moyes in here for a number of reasons.

Surely that can't be good? Although I guess if the deal is already in place then what can we do. I hope whoever it is he'll get the full backing from the majority of fans.

It does seem to be Mourinho, Klopp and Moyes though. Of those Moyes lies in 3rd in order of preference.

This is horrible and strange. I don't like it!

Would prefer Mourinho. Need someone in with a bit of character and Moyes seems a bit dull to me

I dont think his is a spur of the moment thing. Fergie would have being working on this in the background with the board. I dont think Mourinho had any baring on his retirement.

The thing is it's an open secret for a good 6 months that Mourinhos term at Real was coming to an end and I'm sure that SAF probably knew that as well especially since he always had a good relation with Mourinho.

Fergie knew that if he wanted to retire next season Mou would probably not be available and he had to do another 1-2 years on top of next season before he would be available again.

I can see a thought process leading to him deciding that he might do one more season but not another 3 and so decided it would be a good time to step down especially after getting the title back from City.

If Moyes is appointed, the message from the owners is clear. They want a manager who can do a decent job, without any money.

Exactly. We've watched his team Everton for years. Who in their right mind would want their team to play like Everton, if you are one of the best team in the world?

Makes it more likely it will be Moyes as Everton don't have to pay him a few weeks worth of pointless wages.
