No what's funnier is that we've gone from someone made in the mould of Xavi, to McCarthy who currently plays in the Championship for Wigan.

If you think that's a decent swap/solution then fair play to you. I personally think we should be aiming higher.

For me, he's done absolutely ZERO to prove he's ever going to be in the same class as some of the midfielders we've missed out on in the last few years, but i'm obviously full of shit, so we'll leave it there.

At Least you recognise that.

I'd definitely take McCarthy, but would also like a more established CM along with him, but beggars can't be choosers.

Surely what's even funnier is you seem to think that only a Xavi-level player is of the acceptable standard?

Worth pointing out that one of McCarthy's compatriots got relegated with Forest back in '93 - at the age of 22 - but in spite of that he happened to go on to be quite an decent player for us. I'm not saying he's the next Keane but you've clearly missed a trick with McCarthy because he's much better than average. I'd say he looks like he could easily go on to reach Carrick's level which is plenty good enough for most people, I think. Coincidentally he also got relegated at the age of 22. I suspect you would have been calling him average too.

Oh snap, Brwned wins this one, Vasey. Very good point.

Cabaye 'squad player' but McCarthy isn't?

I don't really get this McCarthy stuff, he had a decent final few games for Wigan where he was getting talked up on MOTD. Can't really see what he would bring to the table to be honest. Fail to see how he's better than what we have available, would rather give Powell a start than buy him.
Did you even read his post? He specifically said if United were signing a squad player he'd rather it was McCarty than Cabaye.

Stop quoting me? I said i'm done with this argument.

You obviously think you can compare it to the Keane situation. Silly. Keane was wanted by a few TOP clubs. McCarthy is wanted by people on here. Big difference. His game for me has done nothing to convince he's a future midfielder who could compete in the champions league. I may be proven to be wrong. I doubt it. But like i said:

...we'll leave it there.

Let's face it mate, you don't know your arse from your elbow. I'd assume all of the top English clubs have had a look at McCarthy but I haven't a clue really. I'd be interested to know why you're so sure they haven't? You can't trust the tabloids or agent bullshit but surely that's the only thing we have to go off in this case?

"'Barcelona have asked me to keep them informed about James's situation.

There are a number of English clubs keeping tabs on his progress, too. He has been down to Liverpool but for the moment he is enjoying playing in the Scottish Premier League for Hamilton. "

Man this is what it's come to. A midfielder who was relegated with Wigan and has shown absolutely zero to suggest he's anything but an average player is now being seen as a viable solution.

Have we really gone from Hazard, Moura, Ozil, Modric, Sneijder to McCarthy? Really?

The bit where you say Sneijder says it all. Literally turbo wow

lets all bow

Manchester United have set their sights on Yohan Cabaye as a possible transfer replacement this summer, according to reports.
The Daily Star claims David Moyes is keen on the £20million-rated midfielder, as he looks to add two players in the position during the window at Old Trafford.
Cesc Fabregas is the Red Devils’ top target, the paper claims, with Belgian international Marouane Fellaini also on the club’s radar.
But, if either deal fails to materialise, then Manchester United will look to pursue the former Lille star.
Cabaye moved to the Premier League in 2011, joining Newcastle United from Les Dogues for an undisclosed fee.
And, despite suffering a groin injury during his second season at St. James’ Park, the 27-year-old has been nothing short of brilliant for the Magpies since his arrival on Tyneside.
Newcastle are aware of Manchester United’s interest, according to the paper, whilst Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked with a move.
Toon chief Alan Pardew has also lined-up James McCarthy as a possible replacement, the paper claims, but will hope to keep Cabaye on the books despite the interest of the Premier League champions.

The source is the Daily Star ffs.

That said, I'd rather Cabaye over Fellaini.

Not the level of midfielder we need to lift the team.

I agree. That said, for one reason or another, it seems that we are not really able to get the player(s) in midfield that can really take us forward, so we may need to buy someone to ensure that we don't at least go backwards.

I wouldn't be against him coming here at all. I just don't believe that article.

Manchester United have launched a £15million bid for unsettled Newcastle midfielder Yohan Cabaye, writes the Sunday People.

The champions are hoping to pip big-spending Paris St Germain and Monaco, who are both keen to take the French ace back home.

Cabaye, who cost the Geordies just £4.5m from Lille two years ago, has made it clear he would prefer to take up a fresh challenge in the Premier League.

And they don’t come any bigger than at Old Trafford, where new boss David Moyes is itching to make his first big-money signing after succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson.

The interest from United is another headache for Newcastle who fear being forced to sell Papiss Cisse over the Wonga shirt row.

Moyes wants a box-to-box midfielder and the 27-year-old Cabaye, also a free-kick specialist, is an ideal fit.

The French international, whose contract still has three years to run, has netted 10 goals in two seasons in the Premier League but became disillusioned with Newcastle after last term’s relegation near miss.

The appointment of former Toon boss Joe Kinnear as director of football has done nothing to ease his frustration with Kinnear labelling the club’s vice-captain Kebab in a radio interview.

Decent player but I would much rather have Fellaini.

A lot of people on the cafe seem to think Fellaini is a bad option and don't rate him at all.

Personally, I believe he is a player who possesses great technical ability which he doesn't get any credit for on here.

So yeah, Fellaini over Cabaye as I think he would be class for us.

Isn't he more in the mould of Fabregas/Modric rather than a defensive mid like Fellaini? I wouldn't mind him here as a squad player but would we really buy someone like Fab/Modric and Cabaye?

Cabaye is a proper midfielder who can run, pass, tackle and score goals. Fellaini can't run and can't pass, He's at his best in a 451 where he supports the striker or is dropped behind the other 4 in midfield to shield the CBs.

Agreed. I'd definitely take him before Fellaini, and for £15mil he wouldn't be a bad addition at all.

Kinnear thinks he's funny, like with the insomnia/N'Zogbia shtick, when in reality he's a massive knobhead who'd be an embarrassment if he was involved with your club.

Nothing against Cabaye he's a decent player but after being linked with the likes of Fabregas and Thiago it will be a disappointing transfer.
