Yoann Gourcuff

Pffft. Ekeke, for all the criticism he can take today, surely the one thing you can't throw at him was that he wasn't involved. He was the most involved of all the French attackers. It was just a stalemate and he looked to me like he was simply trying too hard. He kept trying to do too much before he'd even got hold of the ball. a bit more composure and he would have been alright. In terms of technique, he has unquestionable ability when, like I say, he doesn't try too hard.

Thats bullshit... Govou apart, he was the second most invisible attacker on the pitch.

@ spammy: To be the most involved and to be the least effective at the same time is really worrying for a supposed playmaker

Like I said, I'm refraining from saying whether he was the best or worst player...just saying he showed up at least. Now you've said that I'll say that at least him being the set piece taker meant he wasn't the least effective player ;)

He wasn't that bad. Ribery I think had a worse game for a supposedly world class player. Gourcuff just seemed over eager at times and hurried his shot. It's obvious he does have a long range shot and on one freekick he showed good technique. I'm still going to wait a few games before I make a call on him. He looks like a more technically proficient version of Gibson, but it's obvious he has skills. He wasn't the worst player for France today and I have a feeling the coach and the tactics may have been to blame as well.

feck off. He was far more involved than Ribery, Anelka etc

The only player that had more touches than him going forward was Diaby.

Seriously, what game were you watching

Seriously Spammy wtf:lol:..

I saw Ribery try to drive the game, he was constantly on the ball trying to make something happen to no avail (he was pretty bad but not through a lack of effort).

Diaby was excellent. Toulalan was effecient enough with the ball and making some decent tackles.

Anelka was awful but he was on the ball alot.. it was his decision making which was dire.

Gourcuff could hardly control the ball long enough to 'possess' it.. let alone be the most involved attacking player.

wut

Ribery was more involved just didnt make anything noteworthy happen after the great ball to set up Govou's miss.

I suppose you could say Diaby isnt a strictly attacking player, but he made the most ground and attacked the best of all the French players. And he was the one who was supposedly going to keep Gourcuff out of the starting lineup before Malouda had a row with the manager and got his name taken instead.

He was on the periphery of the match, did a couple of things but had large periods of invisibility. And what he tried today rarely came off, save for a good shot from a distanced freekick.

I saw Ribery having half the amount of time on the ball, Toulalan had most of his touches in a defensive capacity, Anelka...he touched the ball 4 times on the first half and 5 times in the second half.

Were you counting how many touches players had instead of actually watching the match then? If so I could see why you're trying to defend Gourcuff.

I thought Ribery was horrible. He's really stupid to try dribbling 2 players at the same time and he's too slow to release the ball sometimes which kills the passing flow.

Ribery created the best chance and then played a lot like Nani on the left wing, trying to make things happen but being a bit inconsistant with the quality of his delivery. He didnt shy away he kept at it but it just wasnt happening for him after that cross to Govou.

Oh and he got little attacking support from Evra. But we'll just have to get used to seeing that from Evra as he doesnt seem to get forward much when I've seen him playing for France. I guess his star sign doesnt suit an attacking player or something.

It's been a typical performance from Ribery like you just described. He just tries and tries forever for zero efficiency overall

I thought Gourcuff looked really nervous, overall he was at least involved which you could say more than most of the French team. He seemed a bit trigger happy and his first touch was heavy, which isnt the norm from what I have seen from him. I still rate him highly, as do I many of the french players, the biggest problem with them not performing is RD

Am I right about Evra as well? Or just the couple of matches I've seen from France recently? We're used to seeing him bombing on and becoming an extra left winger for United, but he barely seems to get forward for France when I've seen you play.

I've heard that he seems to have a lot of issues with his french teammates and that they are avoiding him. He seems to be a special character anyway, and from what I've seen and heard, probably not United material. Thats why he probably failed at Milan, too

If the other players actually passed the ball to him, we would've seen a better performance from him.

Have to agree with that. 50million player my arse. He was terrible

Off topic but Ribery really is selfish and predictable when playing for France

I saw Gourcuff play against Lithuania or some one i think when france struggled to another 1-0 win and he was extremely poor then too

The amount of times he could have passed but just tried to get past 4 players on his own was shocking. He was terrible

He's a bit of a coward. Some players thrive on when the opposition is tough and physically rough but with him it's the entire opposite
Reminds me of Montolivo in that sense. Too modest, too nice. Which is probably why Montolivo's also struggled to impose himself in international football as well.

That's what Zizou such a special player, he'd grab the team by the scruff of their necks and lead them under pressure like in 2006.

Evra for United and Evra for France is like day and night. It's not due to a lack of effort nor motivation it's obviously there to see but I can't help noticing the same mistakes he makes offensively (poor controls and passing) and defensively (always getting by runs made behind him by wingers).Evra hardly makes the same fantastic runs we've been used to watch for United and when he does his final ball is always really bad.

Exactly.Probably what frustrated the most tonight, I mean it's not really hard to know that when you're double marked by vicious/dirty defenders it's wise to keep passing the ball rather to try unsuccessful dribbles over and over again. He's a good dribbler and has a great pace but he needs to use the very small amount of brain cells he's got.

This France team has got players who have delivered top class for clubs like Bayern, Chelsea, Man United, Bordeaux, Lyon, Arsenal and Barcelona. When all of them in looks somewhere between dire and unremarkable consistantly playing for Raymond Domenech, it starts to get irrelevant trying to assess their quality on the basis of performances with the national team. If Messi, Ronaldo and Rooney where playing in that top three, they would have been told to bulk up, get their head out of their arse and quit looking like a September 09 Nani version and why don't we get Diego Forlan instead.

It's completely irrelevant how anyone performs under that coach.

.

But he's still there and has been for a long time.At some point players should wake the feck up but laying the entire blame on Domenech is a bit unfair (even if he's hugely responsible).Domenech can't be scapegoated for all the fundamentals of football the players can't even make.
At some point they have to break this redundancy cause football belongs to footballers.

Agreed. He seems the type of player, you pass him the ball and he'll give it back to you. If he doesn't get the ball much he's going to be wary of this and may try something special which won't come off (unlikely long shots) but if he gets the ball plenty, he will help make the team play well. The players either don't like him/trust him enough though as it seems.

If he had had a good game I am pretty sure most of those lambasting him now would do the complete opposite.

One game in a World Cup doesn't make or break a player. From what I saw no one looked good yesterday. I haven't seen a lot of Gourcuff, as I have said in the past. But I don't think many on here have either, apart from the French and RICTR, who watches all matches in the world.

I've seen a fair bit of him and it doesn't surprise me, trust me, next game he could play like the next Zidane, then follow it up being even more inneffectual than last night. Consistency and menality are his problem. Hope he goes on to have a blinder though, i much prefer the world cup when all the talent are playing great.

If that free kick isn't saved he's declared the second coming.

Probably, as I said I don't know.

But you just know when you have a supposed United target play poorly in a high profiled (or UK televised) game that you will have the hords of redcafe.net claiming said player is not good enough.

He's also still young, som people forget that. He's also not a United target. The only team thats been linked with him in the UK properly by the media is Arsenal. City to of course but i just take that as par for the course.

Technique / ability - no question. But I found his passing unimaginative, mostly 5 -10 yard passes to the side, and usually didn't even find or set up teammates. He was involved because he was playing deep and created absolutely nothing. He didn't exactly show incredible desire to get to the ball, he was usually the only one in the areas where he received it, and then did nothing. Certainly doesn't look a head-up, eyes all over, Xavi/Scholes like passer.
