Yoann Gourcuff

If you look over the goals we've scored this season you'd realise how often Berbatov was involved, I'd not be surprised if he assisted the assister more than anyone else in our team.

Assists only say so much.

If you give people credit for scoring, assisting, and assisting the assister then you end up with so many people getting credit for each goal that the statistics become almost worthless for evaluating the importance of each player.

Spot on.

Care to explain?

Berbatov offers what a good attacking midfielder should offer... With the exception being he's a striker and can't actually play attacking midfield. Gourcuff wel...l he can offer the same things except he's a solid midfielder.

It's not neccessarily about compiling numbers though. It's about watching the match and seeing what exactly was the crucial moment in the goal. Was it Rooney's tap-in which finished the move, was it Valencia's cross, or was it Berbatov's eye of a needle through ball to release Valencia in acres of space?

I think Berbatov needs to do more, no doubt, but I've recognised his contribution in many games and been surprised when others are saying he's done nothing or contributed nothing, all because he hasn't scored.

I agree with you, this means that the statistic of assisting the assister would not be a good support for an argument, whereas specific examples are. People often criticise the 'Assist' statistic for giving equal credit to setting up a tap-in with passing it to someone who hits a 40 yard screamer, this statistic would be much more vulnerable to this sort of thing.

The statistics are largely worthless for evaluating the importance of each player.

Without really anting to get into the whole Berbatov extended argument and associated arsey-ness, he doesn't really contribute as much as he takes away from being a lazy head in clouds type.

Gourcouff looks top class and he's younger. Plus, he's actually meant to play behind the likes of Rooney whereas Berbatov's like Totti, thinks he can invent his own position in the team.

Apparently according to reports in L'Equipe senior France players have lost faith in Yoann Gourcuff and want Abou Diaby to replace him.

And rightly so as Gourcuff has been awful for France in his last 7-8 matches whereas each Diaby played off the bench, he was more impressive and in control of the game

He changed the system. Before there was 2 DM midfielders (Toulalan and Lass) and one attacking midfielder (Gourcuff) but now the team is based with only one DM with Malouda playing in LCM (left center midfield role)

So what's France's most likely starting XI now?

Based on the last 3 catastrophic matches

----------Lloris

Sagna-----Gallas-----Abidal-----Evra

----------------Toulalan

---------Gourcuff------Malouda

Govou-----------Anelka-----------Ribery

I believe the system is ok but Govou/Anelka/Gourcuff/Abidal/Evra/Sagna/Ribery should all be dropped for more inform players.

That's not too bad. Domenech being Domenech I thought he'd just do a straight swap with Alou Diarra.

I can't see playing Anelka up front all alone being a great success on the other hand.

Is that related to their performances in the build up, specifically, or is it related to their form at the end of the club season?

I ask because I would not personally read a great deal in to warm-up performances, or even the first few games in the Group stages.

What are your other central midfield options?

He was a right footed David Silva (For Valencia anyway). Rarely involved, a piece of skill or two but ultimately didnt offer the creativity in the final third that his team needed from him. He could do it for sure, but he didnt. And thats what counts. Not what he's capable of, but what he actually does in a match or over the course of several matches.

Oh dear. So all the transfer muppets on here who think they know better than SAF and want to splash the cash from Ronnie on this chap .... err No Thanks!! Not on what I saw today vs Uruguay.

Was very average, didn't have any sense of positioning, didn't see him influence the game in way and his attacking forays were very one dimensional. As I said, thankfully we have scouts who actually watch real football as opposed to get their opinions from football manager.

Basic technique looked shite to me. His passing and first touches looked terrible. Surely that's more important than his pirouettes? Midfield general for Manchester United my arse.

He's a monster on Fifa, never been impressed with him whenever I've watched him live.. the latter stages of CL and World cup will tell us whether he has the cahones to hack the top top level.

He doesn't have the cahones. Piss poor tonight and not a surprise in all honesty.

Pffft. Ekeke, for all the criticism he can take today, surely the one thing you can't throw at him was that he wasn't involved. He was the most involved of all the French attackers. It was just a stalemate and he looked to me like he was simply trying too hard. He kept trying to do too much before he'd even got hold of the ball. a bit more composure and he would have been alright. In terms of technique, he has unquestionable ability when, like I say, he doesn't try too hard.

Hes a good player but hes playing in a team where almost every player is playing out of position including himself so it shouldnt be a surprise that he doesnt look as good as he does playing for his club.
