Yann M’Vila

Well he's a tackler and a midfielder with high pass output to have some control in the midfield.

As I said in the thread about us and a defensive midfielder, Carrick made just as many tackles last season and of course has a high pass output himself.

But I guess he's not a Frenchman playing for another club with a cool name

I doubt anyone would like him to replace Carrick, okay maybe some muppets would like that, but for me it's more about finding a quality partner for Carrick.

We need a reliable player that can play at the same level as Carrick and isn't close to the end of his career like Scholes.

I think a young player would be perfect because he has time to grow into it with Scholes still being there for the big games, once Scholes is gone this opportunity has passed and we will have to find someone who can perform at the top of his game right away and such a player will be very expensive.

Which means atm we are setting all our hopes on Clev and Ando not being as injury prone as their injury record suggests.

Why would we get someone who does the same job as Carrick though? Two central midfielders doing exactly the same thing together is surely not optimal. Instead we'd be better off looking for someone to help maximise Carrick's strengths, or someone who Carrick will make look better.

As for a young player, Sir Alex seems to have high hopes for Powell as a central midfielder

Apparently the idea is to buy someone like M'Vila to play when Carrick is injured or needs resting.

Do we need another £20 million+ player on the bench? Especially when that money could easily buy a central midfielder who's actually going to effect whats going on, on the pitch.

You're preaching to the choir.

Although I think we have the players to do that in Cleverley and Anderson. A winger and a left back this season along with RVP if he is cheap and next season when Giggs and Scholes have gone, a couple of squad midfielders or starters if Cleverley and Anderson fail this season.

Anyway I feel like a broken record. I'm out of the transfer talk and talk of our midfield until anything actually happens in terms of transfers/injuries.

Where did you hear that ?

French Football correspondent on Talksport I think. Apprently a difficult character and supposedly was involved in some player unrest during the Euros.

No idea if its true but the interest in him seems to ahve dampened significantly.

It depends on what tactic system you are playing. In a 4-2-3-1 two holding midfielders is exactly what you need in a 4-4-2 not so much but it's still a good option if you have wingers as good as we do.

Of course the ideal combination would be the Alsonso/Khedira type partnership with one very energetic holding midfielder that has the energy and stamina to get involved in attacks as well as defend and a deep lying playmaker but Spain pretty much proved it's still a viable option to play two or even creative players deep in the center.

I think if players like Busquets and Alsonso weren't so expensive and rare we would see much more teams play two of these players so I think M'Villa together with Carrick would still be an option.

But since we don't exactly know what the tactical plans for next season are it's probably pointless to speculate about it here.

Rennes confirm Premier League bid for Arsenal target M'Vila

Ligue 1 club Rennes has received a bid from a Premier League club for defensive midfielder and Arsenal target Yann M'Vila, the club's chairman confirmed.

An as yet unnamed club put forth an offer for the 22-year-old in an attempt to bring him to England's top-flight. M'Vila has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal in recent times, but Gunners boss Arsene Wenger ruled out any chance of the Amiens-born player making his way to the Emirates back in July.

Chairman Frederic de Saint-Sernin has confirmed an official bid for the France international has been received by Rennes, but a decision on the youngster's future has yet to be decided.

"He has a very concrete offer from England," Saint-Sernin told Canal+ after his side’s opening day loss to Lyon on Saturday.

M'Vila joined the Ligue 1 outfit aged 15, and has made 110 first-team appearances for the French club since making his professional debut in 2009.

Some sources are saying its Spurs

Am I the minority here who think we badly need a defensive minded midfielder?

It probably is us, by the sounds of how the chairman is trying to auction a bidding war with his comments.

This is why Harry needed to stay at Spurs, we'd know by now if they were the ones that had made the bid as he'd have had several sky sports news interviews before breakfast.

He's be perfect for us...so of course he's going to end up going to Spurs for under 15 million.

I'd be disgusted if he went to Spurs without us even lodging a bid for the lad. Are our entire scouting staff blind to how fecking good he would be for our midfield or something?

Spurs have Parker and Sandro

i'd have thought they'd be in for a playmaker rather than another defensive midfielder

Has to be Arsenal; if they expect Song to move, then M'Vila is an able replacement.

I just wonder why the bidding club is not named. This gives me hope it might be us.

The fact that they're talking about it in the media at all makes me think it's not us or Arsenal. Could Chelsea want him? Spurs, perhaps AVB wants to go with his usual three man midfield and thinks Parker's not good enough. They've got Huddlestone but god knows what happened to him...

Martin Jol said:
“Tom has played in defence but he’s a typical midfield player.

“At the back, he would be a sort of Franz Beckenbauer.

“As a sweeper he would be the best player in the world
— but who plays with a sweeper nowadays?

“Tom is 19, he’s big. It can be an advantage, it can be a disadvantage but the boy is great.

"I would almost say that I have never seen a player like him, when he’s got the ball.

 Does anyone seriously think its us? More chance of it being Dagenham and Redbridge

i thought he was shite at the Euro's

I think it's Spurs. They're midfield looks fairly bare to me overall. Modric doesn't want to be there, Sandro is unproven and the rest aren't good enough for side wanting to break into the top 4.

See you in a few years Pex!

From what I've read he has had an horrid last season and is also now seen as a trouble maker. Can anyone who regularly sees French football confirm this?

There must be baggage attached to M'Vila, or surely he'd have got his move by now - if the hype's all to be believed.

He played in 50 games but was seen as completely under achieving, got booed by the fans quite a bit towards the end as I recall. I haven't heard anything about trouble making though.
