Wout Weghorst

It's fun to get a player like this. Not a big star, offers something very different to what we have, keen to play for us as it's a great opportunity for him. I'm looking forward to seeing how he fits in.
Could say that about 95% of the caf to be fair

I think it’s crazy to suggest we are suddenly going to go long ball. It’s an option late in the game, sure, but Weghorst would actually prefer the ball in to feet and possess good movement and link up play.

It’s very lazy to think big man go long. Nor is it what EtH will do.
I get you, but it was crazy to suggest it even then as suppose I didn't think an LVG team would do that either! Obviously the WC has confirmed that he's not as opposed.

As I said though, back then even when there was a pass on, because Fellaini (bless him) did strike fear in the opposition defences, which meant they tracked him and left more spaces for other players to operate in, our players seemed to have a mental block.

Major difference here though is Fellaini moving up front always came as a defined tactical shift to option B, whereas my suspicion is that Wout would mostly be expected to function within our first option.

I’m so happy with this signing that I’m disappointed he isn’t 5 years younger.

ok...someone give me the back story on why he was so pissed in the tunnel??? i missed this and the first time i'm hearing about it
Wout tried to be nice to Messi and get a selfie I think, and Messi lost it, still pumped from the game. Called him an idiot.

To be fair to Messi, Wout is a nutcase and probably a bit of an idiot.

In an endearing way though.

Be interested to hear Souness appraisal on our new acquisition. He's been pretty spot on far with Martinez being too small and Casemiro just being a steady eddie:nono:

Yeah but what follows is Wout not shaking his hand and Licha pointing back at him in a less than friendly way.
True.

But the fact that Lisandro was even willing to shake his hand spoke volumes. The rest of the Argentines were furious with WW.

It was a bad tempered game though. Weghorst got yellow carded while he was on the bench before he even came on. And then got stuck in when he came on. Properly rattled that Argentine defense. Used their own tactics against them and it didn't go down too well.

But I'm sure its all in the past.

Yeah I'm sure they've forgotten about it by now, wouldn't be surprised to see them protecting one another due to their similar characters, like Cavani and Rashford, or Cavani and Maguire, or Cavani and Cavani.

6'6 this lad

Can't wait to see the likes of Shaw, Dalot, Eriksen, Bruno, Antony and Casemiro pinging him long balls and crosses into the box
But he's actually not a particularly good header, and apparently treating him as such was part of what went wrong for him at Burnley. Not that he's bad at it, but he's better at playing a more tactical role, holding up the ball, finishing inside the box, pressures, etc. - which also fits Ten Hag's approach better.
The guy singlehandedly knocked Messi and Argentina out. $3m could be a steal.
Was that before or after Argentina won the WC? :p

Wout now?

In all seriousness, this is a good move by United. Our long-term targets — take your pick — aren’t available right now. We have important work to do to make it more likely we can land a top target in the summer and even if Wout contributes just a few key goals and assists to help us land a CL next season, pennies invested and pounds rewarded.

2 in 20 is crazy. Was he playing CB for Burnley or something?

ETH turned Haller, who arguably didn’t perform much better (with 10 in 48 games for West Ham) into a top scorer in the Champions League. So I am withholding my judgement for now…

There is no question about this. Brilliant centerforward with lot of great qualities. Underrated. Will give us ton of options upfront.

Anyone think he’ll outscore Haaland for the remainder of the season?

me neither

Messi was angry at the Dutch comments before the game, especially from LVG.

It was Van Gaal's attempt at mind games, which together with how hard they played did work.

But all is fair in a world cup QF in my view. 2nd best game of the tournament too.
After 2 hours of football + shootout, he still remembered those comments??

Don’t know what to make of it. On paper it appears to be ETH’s 3rd choice, behind Gapko and Felix, and a huge step down in quality. In that situation blame lies on the board if we fall short, even if we get 4th you’d have to wonder what if they got him his 1st choices.

On the other hand if he is the player ETH identified and wanted because he offers something different then great. In a market where Gapko and Felix are available it’s ETH to claim the genius or error come the end of the season.

I doubt he fits the same role in Ten Hag's head as Gakpo did. Surely it cant be a case of either or.

I think more likely it might have been both. Gapko as the main guy who suits the system and then Wag’s as a reserve option to come on in the last 20 minutes when we have to throw the kitchen sink.

Worse case. Wags was just a last desperate attempt when after the board failed with Gapko and Felix he just needed the numbers.
