Wout Weghorst

Don’t know what to make of it. On paper it appears to be ETH’s 3rd choice, behind Gapko and Felix, and a huge step down in quality. In that situation blame lies on the board if we fall short, even if we get 4th you’d have to wonder what if they got him his 1st choices.

On the other hand if he is the player ETH identified and wanted because he offers something different then great. In a market where Gapko and Felix are available it’s ETH to claim the genius or error come the end of the season.
Think he’s better for us than Gakpo or Felix would have been. This is the position we’ve really needed to fix. Gakpo and Felix both play wider or deeper.

He seems to have the right attributes (off the ball, hold up/link up, good in opening space for others, presence in the box...), but also seems to be quite a character. Has all the makings of somewhat a cult hero during this brief period. Hope he will be massive success, am a sucker for feel-good story.

All together and considering the market, good job from the club. Even if fires blanks, he will still offer something different and looks like he will run himself to the ground for us. So... welcome Wout.

Antony to finally used his right foot for a deep cross, Weghorst to nod it in to win in the 95th minute against City

have to say bit disappointed. where are the pics of him getting off the flight, arriving at carrington, etc?

But he's actually not a particularly good header, and apparently treating him as such was part of what went wrong for him at Burnley. Not that he's bad at it, but he's better at playing a more tactical role, holding up the ball, finishing inside the box, pressures, etc. - which also fits Ten Hag's approach better.

Whilst that may be true, his heading ability may be still be really good for us as I'd imagine at Burnley, he was having to win aerials back to goal near the halfway line, touchline (long diagonals etc) and on the edge of the penalty box with defenders down his back. Whereas at Utd, he's going to be in the penalty box facing the goal and anticipating crosses where our wide players will be creating more havoc.

Anyways that's at least what I'm hoping. Although to be fair, just him simply being in the box and occupying the penalty box will be enough.

The athletic say that the Weghorst discussion started in December. Formal talks with Burnley around the time we played them. Gakpo was a summer target, prior to the re-surrgence of Rashford. Now we don't need him. Felix is a number 10. We have 4 or 5 number 10's already. Why would we need another one who isn't a striker.

An out an out number 9. Who plays in the box, wins headers, gives the team a focal point, this is what we are crying out for right now. Weghorst makes perfect sense, and he's not a veteran striker pushing 40. He can run all day, closing down defenders, he has 9 goals and 4 assists so far this season. I think with decent service from quality players, he might just surprise a few people. Ten Hag hasn't been wrong so far. And look at what he did with Haller last season.

Exactly, he played half a season in a cannon fodder Burnley side that were already beaten. Dyche just wanted someone to play as a lone striker up on their own with no support at all. Tustling with defenders on the halfway line.

He was pretty clever to have a clause in his contract that he could leave if Burnley were relegated. Which is how he ended up at Besiktas.

This is good news if true.
