United have the finances to compete with anyone and regularly broke national records pre Glazers.

Statistics are pretty much pointless to be honest. In reality we fail to translate that financial muscle in actual transfers

You're right, Woodward does not deserve to be criticized for promising unprecedented spending and urging fans to watch the space while struggling to conclude a deal for a Sporting Lisbon player. He still has a couple of weeks, but the window has proven another disappointment thus far. I'm calm and patient, but beginning to grow concerned.

City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool have added at least as many new players as wed have and it was United's squad who were supposedly in most need of an overhaul.

If its not Woodward's fault clearly something else is going wrong or someone else is not doing their job.

If the transfer market game was an 80s ski jump competition, we'd be Eddy the Eagle Edwards

hes an idiot, loads of these teams are going to be reluctant to sell now soon due to their inability to find replacements.

I too am concerned, but I wouldn't be so quick to pass judgement until we know a bit more. If the window ends in chaos again I'm sure we'll hear at least some information about what's been going on. We know and knew a whole lot about last summer than we know of the current one. Names have been mentioned time and time again, but I'm not even sure who we tried to sign except for Vermaelen.

Well we know for a fact that we've been trying to sign multiple targets, going back before July 21st. As per Edward Woodward himself.

He won't blame the hand that feeds him. Not even SAF had ever done that

LVG isn't like SAF. LVG doesn't have the same emotional attachment to the club.

For Van Gaal this is another job at a top club. If he feels that things are hindering him doing his job he'll say so. Like he did with the tour planning and commercial engagements.

He also said Watch this space... I think we should know by now not to take what football people are saying face value.

Woodie is just playing up to the theatre of dreams idea -- he is just being theatrical by being Spielberg-lite to our transfer market.

Just watch, Woodie will pull some rabbit of of the hat at the very last minute.

;);)

This is what worries me as well.

Season starts Saturday and two players in... Just go back to commercial deals and appoint someone with experience in club transfers.

Somestimes I think Woody gave the "watch this space" speach to try and make sure all the season tickets were sold!

What I find amazing is that Liverpool, who genuninely were title contentders last season, have signed...what is it, 8 players? I know they have champions league football, but by goodness they have been working hard in that transfer market...what on earth is going on with us.

Also..what is our injury list at the moment, Welbeck, Carrick, Shaw, Evans?..plus I'm sure a few more. I said a while ago, there is no way we can compete at the top if we don't get some players in...even if it is just decent players who can cover what will be a growing injury list.

This is just stupid. Woody completes a few signings, Woody is God. Papers link United with everyone who is not playing for United, no more signings as yet and Woody now is incompetent. Can you people make your damn minds up? The window is still open. You cats have short memories, silly season has been like this for a while at United. Gill and Fergie didn't do great business for years.

No!!!!!!!!!!!!......er.............yes!!!!!!!!!

Tickets were already sold out when he gave the interview. So, he either had something prepared and fecked it up, or he's just an idiot.

It's probably the latter. You wouldn't make a statement like that unless it was 100% done turns out it was all scripted bullshit.

I worked on a case once in which the plaintiffs (bond holders) sued a CEO because they bought the bonds based on the CEO's projections-which the plaintiffs argued were so unrealistic that they were fraudulent. The case settled.

I've been reminded of this case, given Woodward's bullish statements in the MUTV interview-in which he made no qualifiers about LVG needing time to assess the squad. On the contrary, he said things were in the works based on LVG's input.

There are two possible explanations, neither of which are good for Woodward: (i) that he was speaking what he thought was the truth and due to incompetency was unable to close deals that he had in mind at the time; or (ii) he was just making things up.

Unreal, dismaying and should be a convincing case to relieve Woodward of transfer duties in the future.

Well, I think if no new recruits happen before the window closes, the Glaziers will have no choice but to relieve him of his transfer duties. Woody would have basically taken a sledge hammer and taken a huge knock to their investment...

Actually he did say that Van Gaal might decide that he doesn't want any new signings. Not in the interview you mention, mind but he did say it. Anyway, I hope they sack the little twat.

If we fail to make any significant signings before the end of the window, I reckon he should be sacked. Herrera and Shaw was supposed to be the beginning of an active window, not the fecking end.

There's no chance of him being reprimanded by the Glazers.

He's a Glazer scrooge through and through, they'll probably give him a raise for the commercial revenue he's brought in while tightening the purse strings when it comes to transfers.

Why should he be sacked sacked ? he didn't do anything wrong in this transfer window.

To be fair, they're in an unusual situation in that they've sold one of the best players in the world. This has two effects. They can't replace him directly so need to upgrade a load of other positions in the squad to compensate. It also means they have a huge chunk of cash to fund this spree with.

It's exactly what Spurs did last season. It didn't worry me that they signed a half a dozen players in one window and it doesn't bother me that Liverpool are doing the same now. Very hard to bed in so many players at once, so they're unlikely to reap the benefits of all these new signings for another season or so.

Of course, it also begs the question as to why United didn't go on a similar spree when we sold Ronaldo. Not with a view to being competitive the following season but with a view to to the long term health of the squad. With hindsight, we kind of dropped a bollock there.

If he's going to continue the incompetence that he's demonstrated so far, he needs to hire a sporting director or be sacked. All of his commercial deals are great, but he has yet to demonstrate that he knows how the transfer market works. In the four transfer he has made

  • Fellaini - paid 4m more than necessary because he's an idiot
  • Mata - Chelsea wanted to get rid of him
  • Herrera - had a buyout clause that only took Woodward 9 months to understand
  • Shaw - bought when Southampton sold off half their team.
He's yet to do much of anything impressive in the transfer market, especially considering how much he talks about the great players United are going to sign.

Yo hol' up there, I think that we were the first ones to start partition.

Seriously explain to me what he did, that can explain the sacking.
I didn't say he should be sacked but he's done things wrong. Mentioning that we have no fixed budget for starters.

Didn't Giggs say a few weeks back that our targets were still at the World Cup?
If so I'd say it's more the case that the players didn't want to join us or the selling club are refusing to sell.

If so you can't blame Woodward it's not as if he can force them to sign for us.

Not doing his job well enough, especially if the window ends with no more acquisitions or only Rojo/Blind. He has to make a high quality signing (Vidal, di Maria, Cuadrado, etc) that will give the team a chance to finish top 4 otherwise he's failed to provide LVG with the players he needs.

You can't? You offer large sums of money... every player has his price, look at Liverpool and the Louis Suarez situation, Brenton kept saying he won't be sold but in the end when a big enough sum is offered the majority of clubs will sell.

With this "unlimited" budget we apparently have we should just offer a club what ever they want, within reason of course and get on with it.. the same way Madrid, Barca, Chelsea and City do.

I'm fed up with the club trying to sign the best players at a cut price and expect it to happen just because we are Manchester United.

His comments just makes us look like mugs.. Seriously Woody if you can't get deals done stop coming out with fecking comments like you do.

Hasn't exactly done much right either has he?

The only thing that he didn't do has been to fulfill our muppets desires. Other than that the club is seemingly well run.

The club has apparently only one big problem the scouting department, this lot are incompetent but it was already the case under Gill and Ferguson.

I'm assuming you've seen the interview he gave to MUTV for yourself, he gave himself a big problem saying the things he did in that interview. Why aren't we signing the best players in the world? Is it because we don't have the sort of funds he said we did or regardless what Ed says the very best in the world don't actually want to come to us any more.

We are tight bastards and terrible in the transfer market it's as simple as that.

Bragging how much money we've got, we must be the only rich person snooping through the bargain basket in Tesco trying to find a dented tin of baked beans or Tesco's own brand, instead of just going to the shelf like anyone else, paying 14p more for some Heinz.

Signing new players aside, so far this summer he's proven himself unable to hold on to existing players (Evra), raise any money selling surplus players, or find loan deal for fringe youngsters.

The only aspect of running the club he's impressed at are the same tasks he looked after before his promotion.

I'm not sure how United's transfer process but it does seem as if we go to the players agent and see if they would be interested in a move.

The point I'm making is these top players aren't willing to join us. Di Maria and Cuadrado are obvious examples, Vidal saga is going nowhere fast if he wanted a move he'd tell Juve already.
