Honestly thought we would be getting someone this week with the PL starting on Saturday. Doesn't look like it at all though which is kind of disappointing considering all the talk from Woodie and our need for reinforcement.

I'll wait for judgement until the end of the transfer window though. If he isn't able to pull sth out though Woodie is a bit of a cnut though.

For the first time this window I'm really starting to worry that this looking more and more like the Summer window last year.

Everyone knew Woody was under pressure to deliver and he simply hasn't so far.

Woody won't give a feck. Season tickets sold out in a record time. All after he gave his huge promises.
If there will be no further signings I hope for some reaction from the fans.
Not so much because I think that our squad is shit or anything. But because it feels like he again talked shit.

The thing is..surely Ed is being advised. I mean, he is a novice with regards to transfers. Surely Gill and the other people involved before are bending his ear a bit, or he's bending theirs. It's not as though there is no one up top who haven't dealt with transfers before.

I suppose if there aren't any more transfers it will come out in the wash...can't believe the Club wouldn't be inundated with emails/letters and a twitter/Facebook demonstration of discontent...

I dont think Woodie would want to either look like an ass or incur the wrath of LVG...he will deliver.

You see that's the thing. Sir Alex rated Gill highly not only because of him being a decent finance director and good friend but also because of actual, practical knowledge about ways of modern football and ruling mechanisms on the transfer market. UEFA knew exactly what they were doing in appointing Gill in their structure.

In his autobiography, SAF stated that David Gill was one of the most competent man he worked with. It's gonna be hard to find a man of his qualities. Even if we would appoint someone else the chances are new addition still wouldn't be of Gill's quality.

I really do hope Ed is being heavily advised. Hopefully not only advised but also motivated for braver moves on the market because I can assure you that there will be demonstrations after another season destroyed by the same mistakes and reason for that kind of reaction may be Louis van Gaal himself who fried bigger fish on his way in the past like Beckenbauer or Cruyff.

In a shorter way - Louis van Gaal will judge not only players.

One thing that has always worried me about Ed is that Football business often tends to be about connections. Not that you only deal with people you are good friends with but that people within the sport tend to know each other very well. With Gill we can see how his post United career has progressed that he obviously made good connections with others in the sport. With Woodie, you wonder does he have any connections with others in the sport at all and if nto does that make his job more difficult, since others are not sure what he is about.

Of course the one issue I struggle with this summer is that we just do not know for sure what kind of list LvG has given Woodie to work with, so it becomes difficult to judge him (even though I find myself thinking judgemental thoughts) fairly. All we have are rumours, which who knows if they are even true.

Hoping that come next summer we still have LvG in place (and I think it very very likely we will) that will make the planning for teh summer much easier without having to once again wait for a new manager to access the squad. The problem being that we may find ourselves at that time once again out of the CL and that will really throw a spanner into the works.

It's going to be great when the players finally do come. Stop all this drama! I can't see any other outcome than at least 3 internationals joking before the window closes from now.

Correct, there is no other outcome that makes sense.
We will get our players before the transfer window closes.

I trust in LVG.

Joking among themselves that Woody has made them terrible offers?

Trusting in LVG is one thing but the last few times we heard that we had masses of money to spend we ended up spending very little. Last year was one example and Fergie's "no value in the market" happened more than once after Gill had stated that we could compete with any club financially.

Woodie came across well on MUTV but he'll be judged by what he achieves for us......and most of that will be the visible stuff in the transfer market.

Lasr minute deals are hurried and have more arm twisting involved as we'll seem desperate.

The problems with midfield have been visible for a couple of years and screaming for attention last season. And we only have Herrera till now. Don't see why we are still more interested in attacking option when we need more defensive ones. Are Blind and Song the best out there?

Just over 2 weeks to save his job..
He will keep his job. He's done excellent job financially, reduced wage bill without spending much on transfer deals if we manage to recoup some money on Kagawa, Hernandez and such.

CEO that doesn't have a clue and a manager that doesn't sign players. I'd say getting Shaw and Herrera is already as small miracle.

Woodward is incompetent. I find it difficult to understand the patience and optimism in some of our fans. It was known by everyone by the start of June that we needed centerbacks and midfielders. We are in mid August and our centrebacks are the injury prone trio of Smalling, Jones and Evans + 2 youngsters. The only defenders we are being linked with are 2 so-so utility players one of whom is rumoured to be a nutcase. There are absolutely no signs that we will sign a top class midfielder to complement Herrera. Whilst all our direct rivals have to some extent strengthened we start the season with a weaker squad than last year. Woodward should remain behind the scenes securing sponsorships and leave someone else to handle the transfers

 If I didn't laugh I'd cry.

I find it strange that some people are so content to wait right up until deadline day when we've already played 3 games. The whole thing once again is quite absurd and I don't think we're much better off squad wise than 12 months ago.
Yep it's always the same ones saying "there's 3 weeks left, chill". It's an absolute mess and it doesn't look like we are going to get much done.

Van gaal said in May that he gave Woodward a list of who he wanted and who could go. We've seen no movement apart from vermaelen and rojo, one of which supposedly agreed terms months ago yet we didn't sign, and the other who is tied up in third party ownership.

Au contraire.

I'm usually coming up with that line about this time every summer. Couldn't be further from how I feel right now.

Not entirely true, last year I was calling for Moyes's head and was almost banned for my vitriol.
I just think with LVG on board he will not allow us (or his good name) to fall under disrepute.

I always thought he was an Essex wideboy, with not much in the way of subtlety -- he's an ex-City worker who helped the Glazers buy our club with money they never had, but I wouldn't blame him for every transfer failure -- some players don't want to come because there are better options elsewhere no matter how much you dangle before them -- even City and Chelsea have experienced that.

However, if Van Gaal actually outs him as being pretty hopless...

Yea always 3 weeks, why can't some fans just realise, Woodward has failed yet again to get the money required to get the players in ready for the season.

Blind is no world beater. Rojo is ,according to the Sporting expert, prone to lapses in concentration and has discplinary issues. We are looking for players who can fill the boots of Rio and Ferdinand. I find it hard to get excited about those 2

Well, I seriously doubt Rojo was mentioned in May, just seems unlikely. But that list could well have included Shaw and Herrera - based on the scouting reports, of course. So it's not as if Van Gaal gave us options, and we got none of the players he wanted.

Shaw and Herrera were deals moyes had already put in place.

In David Eggers' book, A Hologram for the King, an American company's team travels to Saudi Arabia to bid on a lucrative contract. The Saudis give the team the run-around; the team members are left to twiddle their thumbs in a tent outside of the company's air-conditioned headquarters. The team lead has to put up with the poor treatment because he's desperate to close the deal. Meanwhile, the Saudis are meeting with a Chinese vendor, who had the inside track all along and ultimately get the deal.

I'm getting the feeling that Woodward is like the team leader in the book: being led along in a game he doesn't understand while more savvy competitors do their business without United being aware that it's taking place.

Hope I'm wrong.

Yes he did, but we didn't sign them in May and wouldn't have without Van Gaal's approval. There may have been one or two others deals he said no to. So it's possible his list in May included those two as well, along with Vermaelen. Quite simply, we don't know. I know it's poison for any football discussion but that's how it is. We don't know.

Some people are just way too rosy. They think they are realistic instead of pessimistic, but truely they are excessively optimistic instead of realistic. When you are happy with the squad we have atm and aren't worried about next season at all than something is wrong with you. People are right to be worried, people are right to expect more. This squad of ours is a joke if you compare it to the ambitions that have been communicated to the supporters.

The only way this squad and the lack of transfer business could be justified is if the club would be communicating to the fans that we should be lowering our expectations, that we don't have a warchest of money to spend, that we are struggling to attract top players and that we aren't aiming for the title but for top 4 and that it we have good hope we could achieve that but that by no means is it going to be an easy job. But our CEO coming out saying we have a warchest, we are going to sign alot more players than usual and that we can still sign the best players in the world. communication about our strong financial position, the new manager coming out saying the clubs ambition is not top 4 but being number one. All this and than a summer were you just sign Shaw and Herrera with all these departures after a season in which we missed out on CL and finished 7th is just unacceptable.

If we aren't going to improve the midfield and add to our numbers at the back we are inviting problems again and with the competition being significantly strenghtend, you have every right to be worried and frustrated. In fact people that aren't, are way too rosy imo, they'll just be realizing the steaming pile of shit we are finding ourselves in again alot latter than everybody else, just like last season.

Not exactly time yet to start hitting that panic button like a maniac but it is about time to go searching for it and have it close-by.

If we are now taking LvG at his word then maybe it's helpful to remember what he said in his first presser and reinforced when in the States, that he won't be signing anyone else until he has seen the current players himself! This is a frustrating period, especially when you know exactly what will happen if we don't strengthen, or rather rebuild, the squad. They are a lot of factors to blame for this fiasco, the world cup, our new manager's involvement in it, the fact that LvG is a new manager who has not managed in a top league in four years and our lack of CL football amongst others but then Woodward and LVG are paid to mitigate such drawbacks, Woodward as the CEO should be right on top of this .
If we are going into next season with just Herrera and Shaw as our only pieces of business then we might as well promote the rest of the U21s and U18s to finish seventh again but in the knowledge that we are building for the future. It's better to write off the season whilst bedding in exciting youngsters that to persist with some of the dogshit that we have right now.
