Difference is that this season we have a man who was and has been preparing for a return to top-level club football whereas last year we had someone who not only likely didn't expect it but thought it was a good idea to bugger off on holiday when it came. Woodward is the same guy, it's just the list of targets he has have been given to him by someone who isn't terrified to make a decision. Moyes kicked everything into the long grass; defensive injury issues ignored, ageing players like Giggs - no decision taken. Who to bring in - bottled a whole list of names; Alcantara, Herrera, Garay. Even using the example of "what would they think?" refusing to sub RVP off that time, he was terrified of making a decision on anything it seemed. Now we've a manager that's decisive and knows what he wants.

The problem with the Moyes/Woodward thing is that Woodward was a complete football novice. Moyes, while new to the level in which Manchester United operate, was a manager with good experience. He should have known better. But I think his cautious side got the best of him and he didn't have the confidence to make players he didn't know from every angle his first United signings. And one player he did want, Fellaini, was someone he also didn't want to make his first signing. It all made for a very awkward situation in which we chased a very limited amount of players for most of the summer and only late on broaden our horizons. When you read how cautious Moyes was with Herrera even in last August, it gives you a hint of the situation.

Van Gaal probably feels more free to make decisions based upon scouting reports and the views of whatever contacts he has in the game.
yeah agreed. great points. your last sentence on moyes makes me question whether or not we would have followed up on our interest in herrera. based on what graham hunter's article said, probably not

I thought Thiago's agent (his Dad) says United were never actually in for him? I added it to the many myths surrounding United recently like Rooney on £300k p/w, etc.

his dad said we were in for him. him and the guy who handles thiago's image rights. it was thiago himself who said we were never in for him. however, the caveat was he said that as a bayern player

For those that argue one of the core reasons our squad needs the work it does is due to Ferguson's under performance in the transfer market during his later years:

http://www.theguardian.com/football...uez-manchester-united-colombia-world-cup-2014

The player was available for as little as £5m when he was touted to United, a club who employed a permanent scout in South America and had close ties with the region having recruited Uruguay’s Diego Forlán and, albeit via Wigan Athletic, Antonio Valencia of Ecuador.

Sir Alex Ferguson was close to securing Javier Hernández from Guadalajara at the time, but the agents attempting to bring Rodríguez to Europe received no response from United. A few weeks later, United instead spent £7.4m on Bebé.

I remember when this thread used to be the only save haven for redcafe users to discuss cabbage in peace.

Signing Bebe has nothing to do with United not wanting Rodriguez.
Yeah, but without invoking Bebe, the headline wouldn't be sensational enough would it?

As for the actual reasons for not being too interested in signing Rodriguez back then would most likely be that we wouldnt get a work permit for him.

Right time for a bump on this thread.

My opinion has swung right back now.

What is the useless twerp doing? Two signings and then nothing for two weeks. Guess he thinks it's job done and he can just kick back now? How feckin hard can it be to just sign some more top players. Just throw a load of cash at them.

Bet he's back on his plane again, we won't see him til the charity shield.

There has been complete silence from Ed, so he is either on a plane or is going to pull off the ultimate muppets dream.

The MESSION has started.obvious white text to denote pisstake.

I predict one more signing this summer:

Leighton Baines for £30m, late on transfer deadline day, after we've let Evra go and totally failed to get any more cover in at left back in the intervening 8 weeks.

Must be busy negotiating with Adidas TBF..

Err it's 2014

Everyone got over-excited when in fact he was doing what any person in his job should be doing. We are still a long away behind our rivals and he needs to get his little gnomey head into action again.

Err what's with the sudden hate ?

Who do you think is managing us?

Louis van Gaal says "I want him"

Ed Woodward says "You, get on the helicopter"

In Louis van Gaal's own words:

This club has big ambitions; I too have big ambitions. Together I'm sure we will make history.

I'm still not convinced at all, where are the marquee signings at? Where are big balling superstars you promised Mr Woodward?

I remember on Sky sports news this time last year, "Man Utd Vice Chairmen leaves tour for Urgent transfer business" It took months for that plane to land.

No one can question his money making talents though, the amount of ££s he brings in is quite impressive.
