Won't he be pulled out of the game tonight if a move is imminent? Therefore we should have a good idea if this is really "on" by 6pm or whenever the teams are released.

Can't decide whether we need another CM or a CB most.

We have four senior centre-backs with Blackett looking like he can step up as well. The change to four at the back looks like a matter of time so we're more than covered there.

Central midfield is our most pressing concern, in my opinion. With the added bonus that fixing it would have a knock-on effect on our defence, who have a black hole in front of them as it stands.

Fully agree with you. We need another midfielder in, preferably a mobile hacking machine.

We have 4 senior CB's but in my opinion they are not good enough to get us where we need to be. Switching to 4 at the back will help massively but it doesn't look like coming to me.

I have posted this before, we could have Maldini and Nesta in their prime in our back line , but with our midfield, they would still be under pressure.
Improving our midfield will have a knock on effect on both sides of the pitch. I pointed out to EssexRob, the example of Cahill, who was very underrated and he excels in Chelsea because of their midfield setup and struggles when he plays for England.

If United think he will be an influential part of the team, we should just meet the price they are asking for. However, Van Gaal probably has his eye set on Strootman, so it is hard to believe this move will happen. A player like Carvalho will turn our fortune around as much as Di Maria because he is an influential player when building up play and breaking down the opposition.

spot on, between our midfielder ducking and not coming for the ball or loosing the ball easily and defenders needing to hoof the ball out it only leads to them being exposed. I think midfield needs sorting out more urgently than defense.

We really do. When we were chasing the game at Burnley we had Anderson and Fletcher in midfield. That's so far away from what we should have that it's laughable.

I think they would look a lot better with a midfield in front of them. Chelsea and City have players shielding the defence (even Liverpool do) but we don't, at all. We have a collection of ball watchers who let men run off them and don't contribute enough defensively. It would be hard for any defence to look good in those circumstances.

Well taking Benfica as example, they don´t care if a player transfer is imminent. In Matic´s case, he played a big game (can´t remember if it was against Sporting or Porto) before moving to Chelsea. There was no problem there. But in another case, they lost a big transfer when they played Sálvio against us and he got seriously injured . He was going to Zenit for 25 million or something and they backed off after he got injured 6 months by playing in that game.

What are the chances of him leaving tomorrow, @Sly?. Whats the news in Portugese media?.

Don´t think he will move but i´ve been surprised before. I think clubs left it too late for a move. Like i said, he will only move if we have some kind of plan B (a player purchase) to replace Carvalho. Like what happened with Dier. He left and we bought french internacional Naby Sarr from Lyon. But there have been no rumours, so if Sporting has any player on stand by mode, everyone is clueless (media and supporters).

Anderson as part of the deal?

Don´t think so. There are no rumours or info regarding players arriving at Sporting. Only Carvalho and Slimani transfer rumours.

If we decide to go in for Carvalho, which is apparently why we'll be there tonight, then we might propose this. Spurs sold us Berbatov at the last minute and took Campbell on loan. Maybe a deal like this will be sufficient for Sporting.

I don't see what there is to negotiate. They're not selling him for less than the release clause a day before the window.

I'm desperate for us to get him, I think he's class.

Well that could happen but not with Anderson. For the reasons Santos J explained above.

@Sly

No offence, but it seems like Sporting are the ultimate "selling club". It seems like their strategy is to develop young players and sell them for maximum prices. It seems that this would be the "peak" of what they could get for Carvalho.

Match is on BT Sport 2 at 7pm. I'll be looking for any waving and blowing of kisses after the match.

What the lads buyout clause? IF he is good as everyone makes out why aren't we just activating it giving Sporting no choice but to allow him to hold talks with us?

Non taken. We know that portuguese/dutch/belgian clubs are in essence selling clubs. I just don´t agree that this would be the peak. The peak would be after he proves himself in a major competition (Champions League) and not just after a very good season of domestic football. I understand the clubs reluctance to pay this hefty price tag, that´s why i think he should play european football at our club to prove that he is worthy of a big league move.

Yeah, fair enough, he might go up in value, although it's a risk for Sporting to wait

Well off to watch the game. Should be interesting. Not only to watch Carvalho but these big games are usually very entertaining and polemic.

This deal won't happen now. We signed Blind to be our no.6 and we won't play with two holding midfielders when we have Di Maria, Herrera and Mata. Can't understand why we're still being linked with him after it has become obvious we bought Blind to link the defense and the midfield.

Aye, with Carvalho it is always polemic.

Just in case Eurosport is reading my posts again, André Martins is as good as Zidane not really but let´s see if any club bites

Not looking too impressive today... If we're looking for someone to get hold of the midfield I'm not convinced from this showing. Gaitan looks handy though and some lad called Nani.

Anonymous would be the best description of his first half.

Disappointing 2nd half. If I wasn't watching this game to see him, I doubt I would have noticed he was playing.

Because you need more than one CM capable of doing this?

Not his best game but one of the best never the less. It´s not the William of last year, he´s currently out of form. Naby Sarr continues to impress me. Him and Rojo would make a very good center back duo.

Sly are you still thinking he's going no where tomorrow for less than the buy out clause? Serious question.
