Just proves how people lie just to win an argument. i've seen a lot of shit about him being slow, it simply isn't true and most of these people who make those claims haven't seen him play more than once, if that.

From the limited amount I've seen of him he's physically dominant, and imo would be a great addition to the first xi. One concern I would have on him from what I've seen is whether he can defend in space in wide positions when our fullbacks are pushed high up the pitch against the counter. He is great at using his muscularity and positioning to win the ball in the center.

I should add I see Blind long-term as a squad player...a damn good one i might add, and Carrick only probably has 1-2 more seasons left.

I think he's a rotation player at max, if you want to be a heavy contender at least.. (given his performance against Chelsea and Porto)

How did he play against Chelsea?

Average. He´s still trying to regain form and our new manager doesn´t know how to use him as well as our previous manager (Leonardo Jardim). Even so, in the second half he showed glimpses of the Carvalho from last year. We can´t forget that he was up against a world class midfield of Chelsea after playing a very physically demanding game against Porto. I think our midfield did well against Chelsea (probably better than them in the second half) but our defence is atrocious.

He didnt do much if anything defensively against Chelsea and on the ball he kept it simple. Not one of Sporting's best players on the day

Agreed. I just hope the fact that we denied him a transfer isn´t taking it´s toll. I think he is struggling with Marco Silva defensive setup. Our whole defence is. Last year under Jardim, it was our best sector. This year is clearly the worst.

Has losing Rojo been a big contributing factor in that?

Of course. We lost our best player in the defense and replaced him with a french u20 international who has been awful (except for the game against Benfica). The fact that we replaced managers also has influence. Our previous manager was very good in what concerns defensive setups. This new one focus in a more offensive game and it´s messing with our defensive stability. Maurício and Carvalho haven´t been showing the form that they showed last campaign.

I watched the first half and this lad struggled. In his defence, that left sided centre half behind him was playing like he'd won a competition to play for the first team, so it's difficult to be too harsh. He looked technically tidy, anyway. This was the first is seen him play since the World Cup.

@Sly who was a better player for Sporting, Rojo or Carvalho? I know they play in different positions but still.

Carvalho. He was player of the year. But Rojo was very good nevertheless and was a firm favourite of our manager. We had the best defence in the league last year. Both (along with our manager) were the biggest reason for our defensive stability.

Do you think he's been used in a slightly different role under the new manager or are his performances suffering from not having the confidence he had under Jardim?

He has more tactical freedom and isn´t as restricted to the Dm position as he was with Jardim. I think the fact that we didn´t allow him to move and that he´s struggling to get back to last season´s form are clearly affecting him in psysicological terms. In the last games (Porto game included), he seemed to be slowly returning to the player he was last year but his last game against Chelsea was very average. The worst of our midfielders.

He was rubbish v Chelsea, looked completely out of his depth.
'Doesn't look like much like the new Vieira'.
'More like the new Denilson'.

Yep, it was very bad. It was almost like we lost 6-0 :(

Maybe I just keep on catching this guy on his average to bad days, but I'm still yet to see why he's worth any of the hype.
Some say you can't judge anyone on a handful of games, but surely there would be at least something to make him stand out or look worth the hype once in a while?

Thought some were overdoing it about him last year, and still do.

He wasnt that bad,but most competing against Matic , fabregas and oscar will look out of their depth.

The lad in the right system, would and i feel will, prove to be a great anchoring midfielder.

He was very good last year. The fact that he was player of the year, got called to the portuguese national team and played the world cup proves that. Now, like i praised him last year because he deserved it, this year i´m calling him out for average performances. Like i said it´s mostly a psycological issue because he wanted to move but we didn´t let him. He was good against Porto but the last performance against Chelsea was bad. But he was up against a midfield of Chelsea´s quality, after playing a very physical game against Porto so i´ll give him the benefit of the doubt for that. Better midfields have capitulated pretty badly against Chelsea´s midfield.

It's interesting that he performed better when his role was more defined as opposed to having freedom. I didn't realize he actually wanted to leave in the summer, he never seemed to openly say he did. I can see this mixture of things amounting to a poor start but I agree with your other point in here that many will struggle against Chelsea's midfield, if he's as good as many think he'll settle back into form across the season.

Well he is seriously underpaid compared to other teammates, so rejecting big offers from big european clubs will obviously affect him. I think he is close to renewing his contract with a wage increase but with the same clause. It´s not just him struggling under this new manager, players like Maurício and Adrien aren´t also as good as they were under Leonardo Jardim´s guidance. But if he wants to earn a move to a big european club, he has to perform better in competitions like the Champions League. He was good against Maribor but when it mattered against Chelsea, his performance was a letdown. Hope he recovers his form. João Mário has been the shinning light in our midfield (only missed one pass against Chelsea, better % than any Chelsea midfielder) and has been called to our national team to play against France and Denmark.

Any chance of letting him go in January if he's still not happy?

I think it will only happen next year and he has to show more than what he has been showing this season

It seems as if the managerial switch is going to see a few of your players go through a teething period. If Carvalho wants the big move you are right about him needing to up his consistency and quality, but that buyout clause is a big stumbling block IMO. I'm not familiar with Joao Mario, what type of CM is he?

He´s a more technical cm with great passing range, positioning and intelligence. He has been our best midfielder so far.

Sounds like Portugal are suddenly getting a new wave of CM's. Is this the first season that Joao Mario has really gotten regular time in the first team at Sporting?

Yes, we got plenty of options with André Gomes, Adrien and possibly Ruben Neves if he keeps evolving well. Last year he spent half a year at Sporting B, then was loaned to top division club Vitória Setúbal. He helped them avoid relegation and was one of the best players in the second part of season in Portugal. He got a pre call up for the Brazil world cup but missed the final cut.
Liverpool was very interested in him when he was one of the best players in the next gen competition. They actually bid for him but it was rejected. Then they moved to João Carlos Teixeira and bought him instead. If João Mário fulfills his potencial, Liverpool will regret this. He´s been our best midfielder and now gets a deserved call up for the Portuguese national team.

Thanks for the info mate, it's good to see Portugal with so many CM's coming through as the trio that have been in there for the last 8 years or so are a spent force IMO, now if you could just find a decent #9. Do you think Joao Mario could develop to the point where Madrid or United would move for him?

Still too early to tell mate. He has great potencial but he only has half season of top flight football. What´s interesting is that he has been far more impressive than Carvalho in the Champions League. Had the best passing percentage of all midfielders in the last Sporting vs Chelsea and was the only one who held his own against Fábregas.

Carvalho expects England move

Arsenal and Manchester United target William Carvalho is sure he will move to the Premier League or La Liga "sooner or later".

Carvalho, 22, has attracted interest from a number of clubs across Europe in recent years and was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal over the summer but eventually remained with Sporting Lisbon.

The Portugal midfielder has confirmed there have been offers for his services but none big enough to trigger the release clause in his contract. He fully expects, however, that he will eventually move to England or Spain.

"I would not say I was disappointed [to stay], but despite being very happy at Sporting, we all have ambitions and I hope one day to be playing in the best leagues in the world, the English or Spanish," Carvalho told the official magazine of the Portuguese Football Federation.

"It did not happen this year, but if I continue to do my job as I have been doing for sure that sooner or later it will happen.

"I understand the proposals, but I think that there was no value for the clause and therefore they have been refused."

Well not with what he has been showing this year. Entered pretty well against France this evening though and got praise from the pundits.

Would love to see how well he'll progress but he's not showing enough potential in my eyes to warrant a £35 million price tag.

Fair point, no need for him to be rushed, but he does sound like a really good prospect, one I'm sure a number of clubs will be monitoring. Does his style of play remind you of anyone?

Pretty much everyone thinks he's ordinary apart from Sly. Who to believe...?

What? That´s not happening in this thread at all. What i said (and the other Sporting fan plus Arruda the Porto fan) was that he was very good in the last campaign and won player of the year. This year he has been pretty average. Good performance against Porto and France last night and pretty crap against Chelsea. If he can return to last year´s form, he´s everything but ordinary. Still early stages this season. He has all the time to return to his old form. You can choose to believe who you want. I´m not here trying to convince anyone. I´m just giving my input about the player and have no problem criticizing him when he doesn´t perform (mainly this season). Like i said in my last post, with this year´s form, he has to show more to warrant a big club move. He´s thinking too much about big transfer moves instead of focusing on the football (i hope this is not Mendes work for a cheaper transfer).

Was very good against France last night. Looks like another good prospect coming from our academy. Another Sporting academy graduate reaching portuguese internacional status. I would actually compare his passing to Fábregas. Excellent passing range, intelligent with good positioning player. Has to work on his goal threat. Still early stages but he does look very good.

With all due respect, being a Sporting man myself and siding with your long term vision that William has tremendous potential, his passing is nowhere near Fàbregas. Cesc Fàbregas is one of the best passers in world football, incisive, accurate and with a tremendous vision, especially in the final third. William is a solid passer, but he keeps it simple most of the time. Good long and short range passer, but again, not even close to Fàbregas. I'd compare him to Busquets in that aspect of his game.
