Me too. And his performances in the Portuguese league are an irrelevance as it's on a par with the SPL. Bebe was great in that league remember.
Shows how much you know about football when you think the Scottish league and the Portuguese league are on the same level. The Portuguese league is way better in terms of the quality.

Why the feck would you bring up bebe...Did you know he didn't even play in portugese league. He played in second division.

Even so, quoting one player doesnt make any difference. Di Maria?, Ronaldo, etc.., played in that league as well. That doesnt mean Carvalho is going to be like them. Dont judge the standard of the player just based on the league he is playing in.

:wenger::eek: Who let you up to the mains? That's just a ridiculous comment. Portuguese clubs generally do well in Europe. When's the last time a Scottish team other than Celtic have done anything of note in Europe? We have been knocked out of Europe on two occasions in recent years at the hands of Benfica (at the group stages) and Porto. According to the Uefa coefficients the Portuguese league is the fourth best in Europe. The SPL...24th. Some great players have come out of the Portuguese league over the years. Going by your logic of Bebe looking good in Portugal but struggling in England then La Liga must be a very poor league as Forlan was poor in England and looked like one of the best strikers in Europe when he moved to Spain. Also the Bundesliga must be as poor as the SPL as Kagawa was brilliant at Dortmund but has never shone since he joined us. Such a stupid post.

@Arruda and @Sly do ye want to put enlighten this guy a bit more about the Portuguese league?

'Tis a weird comparison. The standout player of one of the best clubs in Portugal, a club world renowned for its conveyor belt of excellent young players, a full international who represented his country at the world cup.

Then Bebe. A 7m punt from the 2nd division who we never even bothered to watch, not a full international, yet played in the homeless world cup(!)

Just saying what I saw. How good is he ?

I'm not the guy to ask as I have seen very little of him "live" besides at the WC where I agree he was poor. Based on what the resident Portuguese posters on here have said about him and what I have seen on Youtube (not the best indicator I know) he is very talented and has the potential to become a fantastic DM.

Maybe he only wants us to sign big names like Di Maria... oh wait...which league did he play in before Real??..

Yep. Benfica, Sporting and Porto in particular are great clubs, only have to look at some of the recent matches between us to see that. Can't remember an easy game against any of them, Benfica in particular were excellent.

There are still guys asking how good he is? Watch the fecking youtube video of 24min or go a few pages back where sly described him 5 times already.

You can watch fecking youtube video of any players " best bits" and they will look good. And I don't need to ask Sly whoever he may be , I was asking Redo91 as he seemed to think that my opinion of him being shit at the WC was somehow strange.

He is very young and inexperienced in his role. DM is a very crucial position and you cant make a young inexperenced player the focal point of your team. that would be foolish. if we sign him i doubt he will go straight into the team, he would probably end up being an understudy to carrick.

we need established players and Vidal in my mind is the player we should be going for if we are going to sign one CM. Not this lad, not yet at least. but its just my opinion based on what ive seen of him.

I've probably said at least 5 times in here that he would be quality for us and we should sign him.

So when this comes off I'll take most of the credit as Woody is obviously reading the Cafe.

 You will take perhaps some credit if employee of Manchester reads this forum despite your proclaimed input :p. He has been my muppet signing since Moyes era.

United should scrap their scouting network and just rely on the caf's transfer forum. Would be saving a lot of money and we'd steer them towards the most current flavours. No more Fellainis, no more Youngs.

You answered it very well. Of course we are not top league in europe but portuguese clubs have done very well considering our market and financial limitations. Any of our top 3 clubs (Sporting, Porto and Benfica) get 1/3 of what Leicester gets from TV money. But our league is obviously superior to the SPL with all due respect.

I am not so sure that would be a great idea. Most caf member wanted vidal to play alongside Herrera instead, rather than have a balanced pairing. :p

Regarding the league quality theme, in my opinion, it´s important that a player proves himself in a top league but it´s not the most important criteria. We have seen players come from the Serie A (Shevchenko for example) and fail miserably at the Premier League. What´s important is that the player himself has the ability, the quality, the personality and the right caractheristics to adapt to a certain type of football. I constantly see the mention of Bébé. I already gave my opinion in this matter. Bébé was a quality player for a team who escaped relegation at a play off. He wasn´t playing in a top team. There are plenty of players in England that do well in medium size clubs. Doing it in a big club is another thing. The pressure and the demands are a whole new ball game. Bébé had a bit of a slow start at Benfica and isn´t getting picked alot. This level will be the definite test for his capabilities.

Like i said our league isnt one of the top leagues in Europe but it´s a good baromether in testing players. The number of quality players that have come through our league and reach top european club status proves it. Besides the Spanish, English, German and Italian league, what other league in europe has the same type of track record in rentabilization and discovering top players as the portuguese league? None is the answer. Rather than judging Carvalho for coming from a second tier european league, you should look at his potencial, ability and caractheristics for a swift adaptation to english football.

That's mental. Why bother scouting around the world if almost every league is shit and every performance in it irrelevant?

Very well said.

As I mentioned earlier in the week; the sporting fan taxi driver who I was speaking to on holiday last week could not praise Carvalho enough and was adamant that he should not be sold for less than the 37mil that was circulating. The kid obviously has bags of potential and is already a class player. At 24mil, he would be a fantastic signing and would bring amazing balance to our team.

For every Roy Keane and Rio Ferdinand that you can get from buying at very hefty prices in top league enviroments, there is also the Jaap Stam´s, the Vidic´s and Ronaldo´s that come from less glamorous leagues but also go on to be important players in the sports history. Like you said scouting is absolutely crucial for any team to be successful. I don´t like to praise rivals but what Porto has achieved with his top notch scouting department proves it. And also praising my President with his current strategy, you can also have the best of two worlds. He has mantained the investment on our academy (deservedly so with our track record) but has also been investing in a good scouting network like Porto. Slimani is a good example of this. Bought from the Algerian league (that doesn´t have much visibility) for 400k and now currently worth 8 to 10 million euros after a very good domestic and world cup campaign. There is value everywhere in the market if you look and work for it.

You had me at regarding.

Absolutely. I love watching the likes of Ajax, PSV, Shakhtar, Lyon Porto, Benfica, Sporting etc for that reason. You're unlikely to find such a constant stream of exciting youngsters coming through and eventually ending up at the top clubs. Must be pretty infuriating as a fan though, could have a mental team if they hang on to their players!

This doesn't seem on to me. It's all just speculation, nothing has happened yet. I can't see Sporting considering selling another important player unless it's silly money, something like £40m. We shouldn't consider it unless it's less than £25m.

Would be a good buy though.

For what it's worth, I don't think this one will happen either. All speculation at the moment. I reckon he'll stay at Sporting one more year.

I am thinking we went for Vidal but couldn't agree to a suitable deal on our terms and then decided to go for Carvalho as our back up option. Still think negotiation is ongoing for one or both of them although it is more likely we will sign Carvalho, unless Sporting play hard ball and we decide to go back for Vidal or someone else like De Jong.

I think LVG is desperate to sign a central midfielder.

Looking forward to seeing what the fuss is all about when Sporting play Chelsea
