Think Strootman had decided on Roma before Moyes came in. Missing out on Strootman was more Fergie, sorry to say.

We were also strongly linked with Strootman before he signed for Roma. I remember the Fellaini or/vs Strootman debates. We signed the wrong player. I don't think Moyes even considered him.

Potentially a proper world class midfielder. Everything we lack. Wins a lot of tackles, dominates his space, physically imposing and he knows how to use his size. A real presence.

The things that make him stand out from the DM crowd though are the attributes you don't expect to see from him because of his quite dumpy appearance. He can pick a pass and has more than a few tricks up his sleeve. Also a pretty good engine despite how he looks.

I suspect that he will be tailor made for the premier league. One of those players we will regret not signing.

True. He sounds just like a Chelsea signing, the way you described him.

From memory Roma had Strootman officially signed up before Fergie announced his retirement.

This indicates to me that Fergie/the club dropped their interest as they knew what was coming and so Stootman, tired of dicking about, went to Roma for a low fee.

By the time rumours surfaced under Moyes he'd gone from 12 (?) million to 20-30 odd million and Roma refusing to sell.

Moyes can be blamed for many things but not Strootman IMO

He signed on 16 July 2013.

Fergie left way before that.

Your memory is not serving you right. Fergie retired at the end of 2012/2013 when the window was shut. Moyes officially took over on July 1st 2013 and Strootman signed for Roma on July 16 of 2013.

So, I blame him for Strootman.

Ok fair enough on the dates (I blame the early 90's). But to me it still says for Moyes to sign Strootman was a long shot at best. It didn't time out considering how long transfers take to sort. Strootman may have officially signed for Roma in July but the reports were saying he was off there for some time before.

He is supposed to be one of the 3 players aligned by Ferguson, everything was done, except Moyes approval.

Honestly don't know who I'd rather, I think Vidal would be a better short term signing but Carvalho a better long term one!...but can we afford a long term signing?

Then again if we didn't sign Carvalho I could see us looking back and regretting it in a few years!

I'd be happy with either tbh...or can we just sign both? Or is that being too greedy? :smirk:

Its a smart backup plan as well, given that Carvalho's price has come down about 10 million in the mean time.

I highly doubt that info but we will see. Unless we have some kind of tactical agreement from when we did the Rojo deal.

Fair enough, I'm only making that claim based on what I read today. I guess the actual price maybe somewhere between today's quote and his buyout clause, just like a middle solution was arrived at for Rojo.

I´m not saying that it´s false, i just don´t have any info about that. Our forum sources (who are usually spot on) are very skeptical about a sudden change of stance from behalf of our President. But at the moment, there are no particular details. I´d be wary of any news that comes from the english media. I highly doubt they have any connections with our board, unless Jorge Mendes is trying to force a deal.

I have massive doubts over this one. He has potential to become a very good defensive midfielder in a couple of years, but we desperately need someone with authority in midfield.

Whoever comes in this summer, the pressure on him will be enormous. You don’t want to put that pressure on 22 year old player.

Also, he’s another one who can only play in 3 man midfield.

Better than nothing but a big risk, might fail miserably here.

- Firstly, look at who he is replacing...Fletcher and Cleverley.....he cannot be any worse. Saw him at the World cup too and he looked really good.
- He's going to play the same position as Carrick, who will take some of that pressure off. Good player to learn from too. People forget we still have MC.
- It doesn't matter if he can 'only' play in a 3 man midfield (not sure if that is even true) because we have a manager who 'only' plays three man midfields.
- There is no reason why he couldn't play as part of a double pivot in a 4-2-3-1.

He'll be a massive improvement on what we have simple because his skill set is exactly what we are weakest in. We have no imposing physical presence who excels at winning the ball back and keeping it simple and effective.

He's very disciplined and pretty quick too. LVG wants team players. He's the epitome of a team player. I'll be very happy if we sign him.

I´m a big Carvalho fan but that didn´t happen mate. No Portuguese player looked good in the WC. Our campaign was atrocious.

This transfer rumour must be unnecessary distraction ahead of Benfica game, right?

Oh it´s annoying but it has been happening for a while now. Slimani was supposed to join Leicester or Trabzonspor, Capel to Marseille or Celta de Vigo, Carvalho to United/Arsenal, Patrício to Atlético Madrid or Valência, Jefferson to Sevilla, Héldon to Mainz, it´s always the same when it gets near the transfer deadline. I´d be very surprised if anyone moved. Only worried about Carvalho. But let´s see if it isn´t just Mendes work to start a bidding war between United and Arsenal. I wouldn´t be surprised.

I'm talking about the US game when he came on a second half sub. I thought he looked really good. About the only Portuguese player who did. Just my opinion.

Oh he wasn´t bad in that match, i agree. One of the few that didn´t get criticized by our media in that game. Was kinda subpar against Ghana. Our whole campaign was a mess because of Bento´s choices, bad tactical setups and inadequate physical preparation.

Yeah. The handling of Ronaldo was just preposterous. I genuinely couldn't understand why he played the first game with his injury, and then to compound it, kept him on even when they were 3-0 and 4-0 down. Just stupid. Seemed like Ronnie was running the team, not the coach.

Is this the appropriate straw-clutching thread to switch to if you're a Vidal thread refugee?

I thought he looked shit in the WC, wondered what all the fuss was about.

Seems pretty strong rumours from this end, not sure if it's our last attempt to smoke Vidal out of Juve, or if it's genuine, but for the fee quoted it'd make alot of sense for us, thought it would be next season though tbh, would leave you guys in a bit of a fix wouldn't it?

Seriously?! I can't understand people bringing up the World Cup again and again. If thats the only time you've seen him, then don't talk about him. Ronaldo was shit at the World Cup too. Are you going to say the same thing about him? Also he played one and half games. ONE AND A HALF. How could you possibly judge him from that?

^This...

We have Carrick who will do great sitting deep behind Herrera. But Carrick is old and this guy looks like he would be an awesome replacement. Sure the muppet in me would love Vidal, but i can see some real potential here.

You seem to be a bit excited ....
I heard a lot about him ,watched him at the WC and he was shit. Simple as that.

This. As if 2 appearances (one as a sub) are enough to judge a player by! :wenger:

Me too. And his performances in the Portuguese league are an irrelevance as it's on a par with the SPL. Bebe was great in that league remember.

1 poster said he had a good WC, in my opinion he had a shit WC. :wenger:

You said he had a shit WC and you wondered what the fuss was about. That made it sound like you expected him to be a world beater and that you were disappointed when he was so poor. You can't look into his performances at the WC at all considering he was playing in a team that was struggling and he only played 120 minutes.

Not for a second overestimating the difference between the EPL and other leagues, but i think you can tell when a player stands out. You don't need to play at the world cup to see when a player has a great range of passing for example. I don't watch much of the Portuguese league but i've seen him several times. He looks pretty good. A lot more assured about this now the price seems to be 24m instead of 37m, not sure why since i spent most of last week in the Di Maria thread saying how i didn't care how much he cost. But oh well.

Just saying what I saw. How good is he ?
