William Carvalho

Luiz. I do think there's a bit of an underappreciation for the #6, though. What do you make of Javi Martinez?

It's nothing to do with the #6, it's to do with Matic specifically. He's fairly run of the mill, but fits in at a Mourinho side because of his athleticism and defensive solidity. Martinez isn't exactly my favourite player, but it's clear he's in a different league to Matic, quality-wise.

Some talk of Van Gaal going after Guarin because Vidal is unlikely to happen, but this guy seems to have been forgotten now. Did Van Gaal not see in him what our scouting network did or was he overpriced?

In the glazers eyes everyone is overpriced, they probably think we have spent enough money in 2013

If you are playing 4-2-3-1 then a purely defensive player may make some sense. If you are playing 3-4-1-2 then using a defensive midfield player could leave you short of attacking options against teams sat deep. Carvalho is an interesting player but our current system probably requires our central midfielders to do more than just simple passes. I've seen him play some decent long passes but typically he seems to give the responsibility to someone else.

So Guarin would be the better option?

Late last season he evolved enough that he can now do a bit more than just simple short passes. Even though his long passes could still use some more work, the precision is better and he actually began going forward much more, almost as a sort of box to box.

That penalty Guarin took recently was sexy, though. Was it when we played Inter on tour or at the WC?

I still want Carvalho!

It would at least put a stop to teams walking through our midfield with ease.

Not sure if he's worth £35 million or whatever crazy prices were initially mentioned, but he is definately worth at least £25 million in my opinion. Either way, we are stuck between a rock and a hard place and I doubt we can get a bargain this far in to the transfer window.

Unfortunately, he looks more likely to join Arsenal than us after Moyes left.

The truth about Chelsea and William Carvalho, no €44m bid, Sporting make things clear

Portuguese clubs usually publish scouting lists to show who attends which games. It's a useful tool but far too often leads to speculation which quickly gets out of hand. On Saturday evening Sporting Lisbon drew 1-1 with Academica and several clubs had scouts attend the game. Two of those were Manchester United and Chelsea, with Portuguese newspaper assuming they were looking at William Carvalho but offering no further update on claims. You can see the full scouting list to the right, courtesy of O Jogo.

That quickly led to reports in the British media and the Express headlined a piece 'Chelsea lead Arsenal and Man Utd in race for £35m William Carvalho' and then gave no reason for that. They also said that Portuguese reports claimed Arsenal attended the match, there were no such Portuguese reports.

Anyway, that was picked up by A Bola in Portugal who covered the story and made it clear they had got the report from the British press. Nothing new.

However, then the Metro picked up the A Bola story and said 'Chelsea set to make £35million offer for Arsenal transfer target William Carvalho' but nobody had actually claimed that. They then claimed 'According to Abola, the bid will be about £35million – £2million short of his release clause – but Sporting could be open to selling at that price.'

A Bola had not said that and stated they were simply covering reports from the British media, something the Metro conveniently decided to leave out. The newspaper then claimed 'The Portuguese club are desperate to move on the 22-year-old in order to raise cash for other deals' which is also untrue.

So far so not so good.

A Bola have an actual update on Tuesday which is that Sporting have told them there has been no Chelsea proposal, or contact, for William Carvalho. That's that then.

It would be no surprise if Chelsea are interested in Carvalho and they did have someone attend the midfielder's last game, in which he got sent off, but the reporting over the past couple of days has been jumping a gun which may never be fired.

Have we just forgotten about this guy after watching him about a 100 times? I'd hate to see him shine at Arsenal or Chelsea while we play Cleverley!

If both aren't willing to play 44 mil which he is not worth, I see no reason to complain mate.

He seems to be one for next summer, which is a shame as all of the 'ideal' CM's seem to be a year away from being obtainable...

Carvalho is better than Guarin surely..

One is a regular in Serie A, the other has had a decent season in Portugal. Might not be that clear cut - and Carvalho looks like costing at least double the price.

Guarin is a box to box midfielder with a forward going mind, William is mainly a DM who recovers possession and plays deep defensively. They are complementary, not a replacement of each other.

I didn't say they were. The proposition was that one would be a much signing than the other. I was simply pointing out that it wasnt as clear cut at that.

Carvalho represents a decent signing - if, and only if, he becomes the player some think he might. He's essentially a signing like Nani and Anderson, a decent season in Portugal and supposedly worth a fortune. I'd personally rather see experienced players capable of stepping in right now and doing a job, not another project.

Exactly and atm Carvalho is the player we need not another midfielder who is good going forward we already bought Herrera for that if I'm not mistaken.

Carvalho is far too pricey. He looked extremely poor during the World Cup. Paying 40 odd million for him would be absolutely ridiculous in my opinion.

How many of you guys watched him regularly? I think we need someone with good defensive play - a tackler with drive and strenght. Is he the guy? as from what Ive seen from YT clips he is strong but looked very lazy and incredibly slow not having a good world cup. I don't know about him. 37 million is not the price I would pay for him. He can well turn out to be a world class palyer in the end. He looks that kind of player but right now I would rather see someone with spark who is capable of pass as well..

Seems like a Moyes potential signing, as soon as he left the club we haven't been linked again.

Hahaha no he didn't! He didn't play the first game the came off the bench vs USA and looked total class. Didn't seethe game vs ghana but even if he was shite in that game what you said just isn't true. Obv not worth £40m though.

I watched a couple of Portugals games live at the WC and didn't think he was all that to be honest.
He is obviously big and has presence and he did look tidy on the ball too, couple of games not enough to judge though of course, £40m though I would expect an awful lot more

Like another poster pointed out he only played a total of 90 minutes at the WC so it is hardly fair to judge him off that. Even the best players have off days. He was a revelation by all accounts last year for Sporting and was the best player in the Portuguese League so although I agree that he is hardly worth £40 million you can't judge him based on his WC performances.

I did actually say that in my post tbh... (the fact that it wasn't enough to judge him on) He played more than 90 as he played the whole game vs Ghana too, as well as a half against USA
