William Carvalho

I did actually say that in my post tbh... (the fact that it wasn't enough to judge him on) He played more than 90 as he played the whole game vs Ghana too, as well as a half against USA

I know you did alright but you also said that for £40 million you would expect more from him. I agree that he isn't worth that figure but I came to that conclusion based on more than just the 90 minutes he played at the WC.

I get what you are saying, however my comment/observations were on his performances on which I had seen him live, not what I would expect from a player with a £40m price tag playing at the world cup, I expected more, in the 135mins he actually played.

I didn't exactly come out and say he is not and never will be a £40m player if you catch my drift. I simply said I expected more from his performances, then went on to say the 2 games wasn't enough to judge him on (as as you pointed out, he could have had an off couple of games)

Anyway I think maybe you miss maybe understood where I was coming from.

Yes your spot on that he isn't a £40 million player although he may become one in the future. I would value him at £30 million so in and around what we paid for Herrera. For £40 million you would expect a proven world class performer and Carvalho isn't that, yet at least.

Footballers are abit like houses. Because of the inflated market rough diamonds or players with potential have zero discount over the finished product as they are so rare and so sought after. Cesc was 27m!

United is out of it mate. All United rumours dead at the moment. What is gathering momentum is the rumour that Wenger is just waiting to see if Arsenal qualifies to the Champions League, to make an improved offer. Newspaper "O Jogo" has said that Arsenal has had two bids turn down. A 25 million bid (with 20 millions payed instantly) and a 30 million bid (in 3 installments).

I think it's probably wise from a financial point of view to leave him at Sporting for another year at least. If they want £37m then it's wise to see if he can keep it up, his price tag isn't going to increase anymore, besides which isn't that figure his buyout clause anyway?

I'd take De Jong and go in for him or Strootman next year, but we need someone. And sharpish.

Seems like Arsenal are sniffing around him now. No idea if he fits LVG's plans or not ( probably not since our interest has cooled after Moyes' tenure ) but since we need a CDM and it's Arse who's trying to get him, we should be all over him. We'll be fighting them for the CL spot and CDM/striker positions are the ones they simply need to strengthen. While we don't need strikers, we need a CDM and seriously, what's better than getting a decent CDM and making sure that your rival won't get him at the same time ?

He would be the exact player we need for our midfield imo. Albeit knowing that he plays for Portugese club he will be quite expensive we need someone like him for our midfield but sadly it seems we aren't in for him anymore.

Arsenal link keeps getting mentioned. Getting worried.

OJOGO reporting it now.

Wonder if it forces our hand on this.

Since it´s O Jogo, i believe there has been negotiations. What i don´t believe is the players exchange part. At least with those players.

We're not Chelsea. If he doesn't fit LvG's philosophy of then there's no chance we'll be interested.

Really? Everytime I've seen him, he seems to have a similar style to Carrick. I don't think Carrick would have made that much of a difference in the first 2 games, unless, of course he was played as the central CB.

He is much more physical than Carrick and we need a player like Carrick in our midfield if we want to go back to 4 at the back, someone who mainly covers the space in front of our back 4. You also have to consider that Carrick is already 32 and getting in a long term replacement for him now would be a good thing imo as we see right now there is no one to play is role once he is injured.

If LvG wanted him, I think we'd have got him ages ago, what with the groundwork having been done during Moyes's time.

Are we ever going to go back to a 4 man midfield?

Suppose you need a Carvalho-type player to play a 4-3-3 also. IT all depends on what LvG's long-term idea is, which no one knows.

I'm just going with the evidence at hand, which is that we've player 3-5-2 for all games in which he has been in charged.

I know LvG has mentioned 4-3-3 several times, but really who knows what that man is thinking.

"O Jogo" have been spouting absolute drivel re this deal since March though...

March: O Jogo - Manchester City are looking to hijack Manchester United's Carvalho deal.
May: O Jogo - Juventus has Carvalho as one of their top transfer targets.
May (again): O Jogo - Manchester United have cooled their interest in Carvalho, but Liverpool are now very interested in pursuing a deal.
May (again!): O Jogo - Sporting are planning to sign contract extension with Carvalho, and are going to double his wages.
June: O Jogo - Manchester United have started negotiations for William Carvalho. Chelsea are interested too.
August: O Jogo - Manchester United are out of the bidding, but Arsenal have made Carvalho a key target and have already had 2 bids (25m & 30m) turned down.

Seems they are regularly used to drum up interest in the hope of sparking a bidding war.

Where did I say we are going back to a 4 man midfield? With 4 at the back I meant a 4 man defense.

Surely we could of done a deal for him and Rojo with Nani going the other way on a permanent basis. Think he would of been a good addition to the squad but he's not worth the £37m being quoted.

Sporting can't afford Nani's wages on a permanent basis. Even for the loan we are paying and he has 4 years left.

He would be a real risk at his release clause tbh, but potentially worth it as well.

Yeah you are probably right about druming up interest since it´s known they have a link to Jorge Mendes but they they have a good track record regarding breaking news about transfer deals. Much better than the other two outlets "A Bola" and "Record".

I think he needs to prove himself again this year to justify anyone paying his release clause. Until then he is a big risk but could be a big reward down the line if he realizes his potential.

We simply can't afford to have any more kids in the team.....I'd much prefer De Jong for the time being and let Pearson and Rothwell progress and if LVG doesn't rate then then sign some Ajax wonder kid defensive midfielder in a year or so

The Champions League campaign will be the most important test to his capabilities. Very curious to see how he does.

I'll take the chance, Arteta and Flamini are a real weakness in our squad.

Think he would do very well at Arsenal. I´m sure that under Wenger´s guidance he would adapt well to English football. In previous year, it would be easier to do business but with this President, he drives a hard bargain. Also don´t know what relationship Jorge Mendes has with Arsenal, since he is Carvalho´s agent. Can´t remember if you did business with any of his players.

I don't remember any dealings with Mendes, he's probably 'not our sort of chap'.

Perhaps it is time for LVG to release another statement.

''I do not have players of the quality of Iniesta or Carvalho in the centre of the midfield.''

Not sure about our finances vs FFP since we've spent a shite load but why can't we do the loan move to avoid FFP? with option to buy and if he doesn't cut it, call it quits :wenger:

You right I expected more from ronaldo and messi as well.

We're the last club that has to worry about FFP with our ever increasing revenue stream. Don't forget that we've offloaded a lot of players from our payroll this summer.

Ladyman now said we are in the race for Vidal and Carvalho in one day. Surely we won't sign both so who is more realistic.
