William Carvalho

Can't believe how down people are about the possibility of signing Carvalho. He looks like he could potentially be a midfield monster in the future. Don't forget, he's just a kid right now.

Someone needs to post all those gifs from a while ago showing Carvalho taking the piss out of all those players. With a bit of nurturing of his talent and some maturing on his part, he could be top class. I don't think people realise how talented he is, having seen him play within himself in his outing for Portugal.
Don't think people are against signing Carvalho, it's just that if it's him or Vidal, most people are bound to prefer the latter.

Cheap as I am, though, and factoring in his age and potential to improve, I think Carvalho could represent better value and be the more sensible signing at €30 million. More of a 'United signing' in my opinion.

No one is against this signing, why would they be??

A young talent, who can be WC in the future.

Anyone seen him play? Is he strictly an anchor midfielder? Like Makelele for example..

If this happens, I would be forced to assume we will definitely play a midfield 3 and no wingers.

He's played as an anchor all season under Jardim but Sporting had a poor midfield the season before so it was a lot more tactically rigid this year so he didn't really have the freedom to go forward. He's good technically and on the ball though and in a better team under a less tactically strict formation he'd definitely be able to get forward more and he'd be good too.

He's played in a 2 for a few games just aswell, and a midfield 3 wouldn't necessarily mean no wingers, especially if it was Carvalho, Herrera & Mata.

Why not ?? We needed two minimum anyway. Is it that far fetched to think we may get three ??

The only way I can see us getting three is if we sign one of Carvalho/Vidal and then get someone like De Jong for a cheap fee with a couple of midfielders leaving.

There's no way we're going to sign another two midfielders in the big money bracket.

Woodward so far has shown that he is not afraid to spend money if needed. It will also solve our CM problems for a few years. I did not think we will spend 27m on Fellaini, nor did I think we will spend 37m on Mata, but we did. If LVG wants these players, we will sign them.

That's a big if though. When we still need to bring in a defender (at least one) I really can't see us shelling out the type of money it would take to bring in someone like Vidal and Carvalho.

It's one or the other really, it has to be.

And as much as I like Vidal if you had offered me a midfield of Carvalho, Hererra and Mata at the start of the window I would have bitten your hand off

Definitely. I'd be happy even if we got someone like Gustavo to partner Herrera now (even with his silly moustache).

We've got tons of creativity in the side we just need to give those players the freedom to play.

theres no way LVG would not be having his say in transfers. If we're after someone its because he has ok'd the list

It does not have to be one or the other. We can sign both. We will still have the money need to sign a defender(we only need one).

Woodward has wanted to make a big signing, which was the reason that he was targeting Cavani. I just don't understand why people think that if we sign both, then we will run out of money to sign a CB.

Also, it seems we are targeting cheap options for CB (Vermaelen / De Vrij), so can see us going for a big transfer in CM.

His awareness is what impressed me the most but that's probably going off one moment in the USA game where I thought he was about to get mugged from behind, and he just calmly recycled the ball back to the center backs.

It could end up being eighty million for the pair of them though (maybe even more), with nearly thirty already spent on Herrera. I just can't see us spending that much money this summer, I really can't.

If we do then fair enough, I wouldn't complain. Really, really doubt it though.

@Sly
do you think WC has the attributes to be converted to centre half? How is he in the air?

Would be a waste of his potential and ability. He's not slow but he lacks the acceleration to be a good centre back + he's a beast of a midfielder and one of the best young ones around anyway, wouldn't make sense playing him in a position he's played in a handful of times in his career.

If I was a gambling man I'd bet De Jong will arrive after World Cup and Strootman in January and not Carvalho
I am pretty confident Carvalho will stay 1 more season at Sporting hopefully im right ;)

Why didn't he start the games against Germany and USA in the world cup? Is he normally a starter for Portugal?

Nope. Blame Bento !

Because our managers clueless and sticks with the old guard. No he isn't but he will be from now on I'd imagine. On ability he was easily our best performing midfielder last season and everyone knows he should have started except for Bento.

Paulo Bento doesn't seem like the smartest manager out there. Andre Almeida at LB for fecks sake.

As much as I want Vidal, I honestly think if we miss out on this guy he's going to go elsewhere and develop into a world class monster of a player.

He has actually played in that position when he was playing at Cercle Brugges in his first loan. Our previous manager has used him in that position at friendlies but during the campaign he always played as DM (when we played 4-5-1) and CM (4-4-2). I think he can do that position but is probably lacking the routines since he hasn´t as center back in about a year.
He´s pretty useful at set pieces and has good aerial ability in both defensive/offensive end (has scored almost more goals in one campaign than Fernando (now City) from Porto in 7 years).

If the press report from Portugal is true and we can pick him up for around £23-24 million, I wouldn't be surprised to see us pursue this deal.

A bit like Herrera and Shaw, his age means there is plenty of scope for improvement. He'd be quite a typical United signing in that respect.

Manchester United have been told they will have to pay a whopping £37m if they are to land Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho.

That is the price of the 22-year-old's release clause, but Sporting director Augusto Ignacio has admitted the club are open to selling him this summer.

"It's not like the old days when players left Sporting at any price," Ignacio told the club’s TV channel.

"We are not concerned with William Carvalho because we have alternatives, who will want to play as well.

"The termination clause ensures a great deal to Sporting. I am very pleased with the negotiations.

"It is not easy to negotiate for players, you need to be very shrewd but Sporting have a president who knows how to negotiate with anyone and what is best for the club."

Carvalho played in all three of Portugal’s World Cup matches.

Try and bring the price down a bit.

£37m makes Luke Shaw's price seem reasonable.
I was ok with spending the money for Shaw and Herrera but £37m for Carvalho is highway robbery.... for £37m you should be looking at the very best CDM's in world football today.

£30m would be reasonable.

From the little i've seen of him, i'd be happy to get him for somewhere around 22-25m. 37m is way over the top, but i guess that's the idea. If we can lower the price then great but we shouldn't be paying his release. This is where Woody earns his money i guess.
