Is it likely that Moyes will own to the Fallaini transfer having been an error after so few appearances?

I think we should go hijack Sporting's intended replacement for him instead. Many times these Portugese clubs usually get it right and sell them on for another huge fee few years later proving a success, and the cycle continues

In any event, do we not ahve a problem as regards third party ownership with such a transfer?

The top priorities should be a creative/dynamic mid, a dominant center half, a new lb and a possibly a new top quality wide player. We can do without a player of Caravalho's ilk for another season, if necessary.

 The moment I saw 'Sporting have already lined up a replacement' I thought the exact same thing.

I certainly like what I've seen and heard so far. With the likes of Mata starting wide who will defend minimally, a player like Carvalho would be vital. Carvalho and Carrick would be a solid 'double pivot' in a 4-2-3-1 set-up, and ideally also a creative upgrade on Cleverley and we'll be set in the middle.

How much would Carvalho cost? It has been said that his buy-out clause is 37.5M, however I can't see us paying that much for an unproven player in the EPL. Surely we wouldn't have to pay anymore than 20M for him?

Since it's not really my money but, do care about the club, I think it's time the club through money at the midfield problem. If that means buy 3 or 4 and over paying, so be it. We've made punts on all the other positions. Sure some of those were not as much money as we are talking about for CM players we'd want to try get like this guy but, then we weren't as desperate.

Even getting a top player may not resolve our issues in CM because that player might not fit in. We need to get in at least 2 if not 3. One can can easily be a player like this who has a very high ceiling and the other can be an established player.

We need two CM players no doubt......maybe 3 players

I'm not sure if Carrick is happy with a back-up role

3, or even 2, midfielders would involve some tough decisions that would be interesting to see of Moyes is willing to make.

Anderson is as good as gone. The rest are Carrick, Fletcher, Cleverley and Fellaini. Adding two would make 6, fighting for 2 spots. Obviously 3 would mean 7 into 2, then there is perhaps Powell and perhaps another youngster we may wish to promote.

Letting any of the first 4 go starts becoming an uncomfortable decision. Carrick won't be around for much longer perhaps anyway, and has proven to be the best of that lot regardless, so I'd like to see him kept of course.

Fletcher is an interesting one. I think his whole existence within the squad is clouded by sentiment. Personally, I don't see him as good enough either defensively or offensively for us, and would think he was one we could do without. However, taking such a decision would indicate that he obviously isn't good enough anymore because of a condition that was not his fault, and has now been used against him to let him go. We wouldn't look like this 'moral example' that I think we often try to be.

Cleverley is average, but he is English and an academy graduate. Sub-consciously, there is the whole debate about English players playing for top English clubs, and it will always seem negative when one of such clubs gets rid of one from their academy and replaces him with what will likely be a foreign equivalent.

Fellaini is one of Moyes' men, and getting rid of him, or perhaps even simply marginalising him, will reflect poorly on Moyes' judgement in the market, and paint him as a £28m waste of money (which to be fair, he probably is).

In my personal view, I'd have no issue with Fletcher, Cleverley and Fellaini moving on this summer, or at least Fletcher and Fellaini - with 2 very good midfielders coming in. That said, that is unlikely to happen, so I doubt there would be room in the squad.

I would sell Fletcher and Anderson
Fellaini will stay 100% after just one season here and we've just paid feckin 27m for him
I would give Cleverley another chance too

We're needing at least 5 CM for next season

I can see we're playing Carrick, Fellaini & Cleverley in most of Europa League and League cup games in the first months of the season

Carrick + 2 new CM in the League games and important cup games

Carvalho and Kroos............and i would kiss Moyes and Woodward

Would prefer if we spent the 20m+ on a finished article rather than a player who's very much a work in progress. Having said that he has been really impressive albeit a little raw from what i've seen of him. Somehow reminds me a bit of Busquets in his style of play only a lot more dynamic and aggressive but slightly worse off in possession and spacial awareness as of now. Under the tutelage of a good coach those flaws can be ironed out and improved upon. Still feel it's a bit too early for him. Would do well to ply his trade in Portugal for another season before jumping ship IMO.

We have been guilty of watching players move to other clubs and become the player we need, and then come on here and ask 'why didn't we move for him when he was at x? Now we'll never get him from Barca' etc.

If Carvalho is really the truth, especially in a role where top players don't come around that often - we have to get him now while he is at a club that could still feasibly sell players to us. The 'finished article' players at at elite clubs. We don't take their players really, we still need to be in the speculative game too.

Strootman, Bender. Both more finished products at not an elite club right now in the same or comparable position. Look I really like him as a player and would love us to sign him up, but I'd rather go for proven quality if he would be that expensive. Everything over 25m would be quite expensive, and we could get one of those 2 players for that kind of money.

Was just going to reply but Anderson18 took to words out of my mouth. Have to agree with his assessment. It'd be too high a fee for a prospect that hasn't yet been tested at the highest level.

I can't wait for December 2014

He plays fantastic for his new club and everyone says "feck you Moyes....feck you Woodward......why haven't we bought him if we've watched him 15 times last season.......madness"

How about we hi-jack their entire scouting-network. Should save us a lot of money

We had the chance to go for Strootman and we didn't. I was one at the time saying we should have but we seemed to let him go now he is excelling at Roma.

Why does everyone seem so sure he's coming? Has there been anything official making us favourites for this or is it just a feeling? Would be a great signing,a n all round energetic, big and strong midfielder.

We've scouted him about 12 times already this season and he has a release clause so it's more straightforward if we do want to bid for him.

I have seen a lot of him since their was small rumors United was interested in him 5 months ago. Most of my analysis of him was posted in the newb section, which I can not reconstruct at the moment due to the length. Nevertheless, alongside one sporting Lisbon supporter in that section, we believe he is going to be a great prospect for the future. Moreover, once the world cup comes, he will be one of the young players to watch out for.

If United does aquire him, I definetly would welcome his addition to the squad despite the belief that Fellaini is going to be Carrick long term replacement. Carvalho is a more natural holding midfielder that excel in positional awareness, defensive responsibility and passing distribution. With football evolving towards a direction that technicality is a vital attribute, he would help United's progression into a team that would not fall behind it's competitiors in this area of the game.

Unless Moyes would be looking to play Carvalho slightly behind Fellaini?

Yesterday, Fellaini played as a box to box midifelder for us, while Carrick played his normal holding midfielder role; dictating play from deep. Now, although Fellaini is decent at breaking up play, he's not the player who will dictate the game like Carrick does.

I haven't seen Carvalho play, however, from what I hear, he's similar to Carrick, except he's more dynamic. Now, in my opinion, this would compliment Fellaini a lot, as he'd be able to get forward and be a goal threat like he was yesterday, knowing he's got someone behind who's mobile enough to cover for Fellaini's lack of mobility.
