What trail? going by the players that the media have been linking us with since LVG has taken over, they know feck all about our transfer activity. If you are to buy into our apparent 'trail', we're signing Nigel De Jong and Vermaelen, who has recently denied any link.
Exactly, this is another legacy 'Moyes target' that we are no longer interested in since LVG took over, along with Kroos, Fabregas and other players that Moyes wouldn't have been able to sign.

Considering that Van Gaal Will most likely only be here for 3-5 years max (i'd hope for more if everything works out) i'd rather we built a team for the long term. The ready to go players like Vidal, Schweinsteiger etc won't last much longer than Van Gaal which could put us in a position in a few years where the next manager once again might have to rebuild the squad.

I don't think in modern football you can think past 5 years, players are probably not going to stay at clubs for a decade anymore due to the unfortunate agent culture. To me if we got a player like Vidal who has just turned 27 and should give us 5-6 top years at least, then that's preferable to buying expensive potential in the hope they'll stick here an extra few years, I mean all the time Vidal was here for instance we should be developing young players in readiness.

He's still the midfielder that I want most. Think he would be quality for us.

I hope you're wrong but you make a fair point. However, if Van Gaal is set on getting Strootman I don't see Vidal coming here as they both play in the same role. Even if Carvalho came here but left later on it could still be possible for us to recoup the money invested or make even make a profit, that won't be possible with Vidal though he might be the stronger contribution to the team short-term. I'd take Strootman+Carvalho (67 million) over Vidal (50 million).

I'd say Strootman and Carvahlo were more alike than Strootman and Vidal, if needed Vidal can play as a much more attacking type of CM and has goals in him where as that is not really a feature of Strootman or Carvahlo's game. I am also not sure we'd get the two for anywhere near that price, Sporting want £37M for Carvahlo and Roma only signed Strootman last year, they have no real reason to sell for anything other than at least £50M if we are willing to pay £37M for a prospect.

Why does every big black midfielder get likened to Vieira and Toure? He isn't much like either. He's a holding midfielder, neither of the above were. People that criticise his lack of forward runs really don't understand the concept of a holding midfielder.

To be fair, he jogs exactly like Yaya. It's uncanny.

Well i'd disagree with you there as I see Strootman and Vidal both as box-to-box players. Vidal got 11 goals and 6 assists in the League last year while Strootman got 6 goals and 7 assists so the difference at least stats-wise isn't that wide and with Mata, Rooney (?) and Kagawa(?) in the squad I think the OM spot's covered anyways. I don't think that 30 million would an unrealistic number considering Strootman might want the move and it's almost twice what they paid for him.

I stand corrected on Strootman's attacking output, I didn't realize he had those stats, but really playing with two complete CM's wouldn't be a negative IMO, much like back when we had Robson/Ince and Keane/Ince, two box to box CM's that could run all day. The thing with the price is why would Roma settle for such a fee in the current transfer market for a player who is a lynchpin in their side? Surely if we were willing to pay £37M for Carvahlo Roma would want a good chunk more for Strootman who has done it in a better league.

Carvalho and Herrera in midfield would be dream stuff, having waited for 7 years and then get those two would at least make up for some of the agonies we went through. Can't really believe it will come that way so let's be happy the one we hopefully get confirmed today or tommorow. Anyway I buy both in FIFA :D

Just shows how Bento is a stubborn mule and an awful manager. He will be an integral part of our national team in the future with or without him.

Just like Capello then. You don't take chances then you don't get results.

How is that even possible? He played much less minutes than the players he is compared to . Beit, those players are not really noteworthy, they are impressive numbers on its own. He reminds me of Javi Martinez and we all saw how he was integral to Bayern champion league success in the 2012/2013 season

It says show per 90 min metric... so they have taken 1 halfs performance and doubled it for him whilst they have taken two games for the other players and halfed theirs... probably favours carvahlo as you can of course play harder for half a game than you can for a full game.

It has certainly gone quiet with us being linked to him whilst the stories linking us to strootman keep on growing now lvg has been appointed - guess we will have to wait and see but as it stands i certainly dont expect us to sign him

He has been awful today. he looks slow and immobile. Whatever the stats show on his pass rate, the only successful ones have been 5 meters sideways or behind. Every one of his forward passes has gone astray.

This is why it's good to watch players yourself. Not saying he isn't a good player, or won't go on to be a top player, he may just be having a bad game, but the way some people talk about him on this forum is like he's already the finished article.

those youtube videos as well give biased views. They could make anyone look good

He's been poor for us today but if this is the only time you've seen him you can't really be basing your opinion of him solely on this considering he's been the best player in Portugal for the last year. He's a good player and will only get better, just hasn't been his day, nor anyone's for us.

I thought his composure and passing were good in the first game. He seemed to walk the game and lacked energy, and despite being a defensive midfielder he hardly harried the opposition.

Strange game for him. He's a superb tackler and looks positionally very god, but he's shanked some very simple passes and lost it poorly a couple of times.

Really think this guy is being/has been overrated by people.
I've said before, to me he's pretty much a bigger version of Mikel.

Quite an ordinary young player.

Clumsy as well. I have seen him before this and I have not been impressed and he is playing some poor teams in Portugal. Do not want, at least for that price. Schneiderlin is 1/3 of the price and is the better player, should rather og for him (if we are not going for Kroos, Vidal or anyone like that).

I have never seen this player, i watch the game and i didn't realise he was there. :(

Schneiderlin is a very tidy player. I remember myself and a few others put him up as consideration and he was laughed at, not sure why.
