William Carvalho

Just watched Januzaj and although wasn't entirely his fault, if you hadn't watched him in a utd shirt, who would not know how brill hes been for us based on one game!!!!

I am not buying this story. Seems like typical crap that we hear regarding transfers. But this one is emanating from India, hence seemed funny and share-worthy, so sharing it :-). Don't hate me not trying to sell this as a genuine source or anything, just seemed funny so posting it here.
My friend has a cousin(I know him too), he works in Deloitte. That guy is in Kolkatta(for a client or with Deloitte am not sure). This guy(cousin of my friend) has a colleague, who has a cousin working in the MU Strategy Team(I have no idea what this is and if it exists). This MU Strategy team guy has been told that Carvalho is travelling to Manchester for completing the transfer formalities. They were waiting for him to be done with the World Cup, now that Portugal is out, things are starting to happen.

I don't want him though. After Herrera, we need an experienced and proven player who can help us maintain possession. Carvalho does not seem like that kind of a player.

For the benefit of his own career and development, he should really stay another year. I can't see any big team splurging out the cash for him currently, and if he does get a move it might be more of a side-step than a leap forward.

My head hurts.

I'm really interested to know what people who watch him regularly think of him.

Hard to judge him on Portugal because you wouldn't even know based on this World Cup they have the best player in the world.

Why? They are not similar players. In fact they are players whose styles complement each others.

They are both solid defensively though. I'd imagine our attention will be going toward a player that can dictate a game. Herrera could to an extent, but it's not in his game to contaol games the way somebody like Modric or Scholes would.

Herrera can definately dictate a game as shown when he was managed by Marcelo Bielsa

I never said he couldn't, but from what I've seen he's not going to dictate a game in the way that Scholes did for us. He's not an amazing passer of the ball, but that's no insult, as there's so much to his game regardless of that.

Scholes wasn't as dominant at dictating games at 24 either. Herrera is a more mobile player and his short range game is superior to Scholsey.

I always thought he was a good passer of the ball, maybe not those huge long range passes, but he could give us the passing range to keep that ball moving. That is what united need, a midfielder to keep the ball ticking, has we have been guilty of giving the ball away

This is the one i would be most excited about if we got him.But that's why it will probably never happen.

William Carvalho has seemingly re-opened the door to a move away from Sporting Lisbon this summer.

The defensive midfielder has reportedly caught the attention of several of Europe's giants, with Manchester United, Real Madrid, Juventus and Monaco all heavily linked with a move for the 22 year old.

Carvalho has constantly denied any rumours about his future, but after Portugal's early elimination from the World Cup he admitted he is not so sure anymore.

"Will I stay at Sporting? I don't know. I'm going back to Portugal and then we'll see," Carvalho said in an interview with MaisFutebol after Portugal's 2-1 win over Ghana.

Carvalho played all 90 minutes in the victory over Ghana and 45 minutes in the 2-2 draw with the USA as Portugal crashed out at the group stages of a major tournament for the first time since 2002.

"I am very proud to be in my first World Cup at 22. It was a very good experience but unfortunately our objective was not achieved. We are all down, but we have to look to the future."

Carvalho was expected to start in Brazil, but Paulo Bento stuck with his favourite midfield trio of Miguel Veloso, Raul Meireles and Joao Moutinho until injuries forced his hand.

"Did I expect to play more? It's for the manager to decide who plays. I'm just happy to help."

Sporting are reportedly readying a new contract for Carvalho, who currently has a €45M release clause. Manchester United have been reported as hot favourites for his signature all season and Louis van Ga

i would love him here, but rethinking the path football is taking in regards to hardworking players, I would not mind United looking elsewhere if the alternative has the hardworking trait aforementioned.

Who or what is Zero Zero? If we learned anything from the past few years, it's that most rumours emanating from the Portuguese press are pure bollix.

We have that in Mata, what we need is a defensive midfielder to sit behind Herrera and Mata.

I don't think Carvalho is the right player and not because of the role he plays but because I don't think he's got enough experience at a competitive level. We can't take a 45m Euro risk on an unknown quantity.

I don't really know how good this guy is but if we do get him it almost certainly rules out Vidal (probably not much chance of getting him anyway but still)

I mentioned in the twitter thread that if we're reluctant to go to the release clause, I wonder if we'll explore the option of putting Nani or Bebe in part exchange?

I hope we can file this one away under all the bullshit rumours, he looked timid and sluggish to me.

I wouldn't mind getting him at all.Carvahlo, Herrera, Mata would be a very balanced midfield. But 43M is too much and I would hope we would have a good go at Vidal before we look at him.I reckon this report is BS anyway.

Wasn't this PortuBall twitter account the same one who said we're signing Gaitan earlier today?

It would be € 43 mil, no? So a bit less than what we paid for Mata. Still would be too much for Carvalho!

Having only seen the guy for a few minutes, I shouldn't judge him...but I can't help thinking we shouldn't give up totally on Fellaini just yet.

Lets see what LVG can do with him before adding another potential talent to the midfield.

You might argue the players are completely different, but having purchased Fellaini, Mata and Herrera in the last 12 months, I expect the next midfield player United buy to be the last for a number of years.

Fellaini will be gone before the season starts. Far too limited for lvg

By the feeling from LVG, he does not see fellaini has a starting player but more of a squad player

I take your points.

Another thing i'd worry about is making too many changes to the team.

Considering the squad as it stands tonight, I'd put a defender a higher priority than signing Carvalho.

But I'm excited about next season so no complaints. :)

Hmm ZeroZero are a data website pretty much(a great one at that) and don't usually report anything from their own sources so for them to come out of the blue with this would make you think they know something. Strange how they would as opposed to anyone else though. They say he's a priority for us due to the wishes of LvG and we've sent representatives out there today but we don't intend to pay the €45m release clause. Chelsea are interested too according to them (was report in British press today I think?) but they don't reference British press, it's all their own sources.

Anyway, poor performance against Ghana aside, he's a beast of a player and him, Herrera & Mata would make a great midfield 3, remains to be seen if it'll happen though but it does seem to be more than just pure speculation considering it's from ZZ. Although they say we won't pay the €45m & Bruno de Carvalho said he won't be sold for less than that so it looks like it's over to Woodward!

People who watch him regularly. Would he make it in the prem and what player is he similar to?

If we do sign Carvalho I assume it'd be for a specialized role, he'll be our destroyer and he'll sit deep and provide defensive cover, giving grounds for Herrera and co., to get forward. He was really being hyped up a few months ago when we were last being linked with him, so going off that I'd look forward to having him here.

He's got all the attributes needed to make it in the Prem, best player in the league this year quite comfortably. Aside from a poor game for us against Ghana the other day he's hardly put a foot wrong all season. Didn't get forward much in the league but I think that's down to instructions from Jardim as opposed to from his own accord as I think if he was in a higher quality team with a manager who wasn't as strict & rigid with tactics, he'd get forward and be a threat in that sense too. At Sporting prior to this season just gone the midfield was poor so it was understandable that it was a bit more strict in there this time round but I definitely think he could offer something going forward. Wouldn't say there's anyone with exact similarities playing in the Prem at the minute, he's your typical destroyer in the sense that he'll sit in front of the defense and be like a brick wall to get through but he's good on the ball too.

Should have started for us at the WC but with Bento being a stubborn cnut it was never expected.
