William Carvalho

He played well against Ireland. A noticable presence in midfield that efficiently anchored the back four. He should have taken more risk in his passes, but the manager probably instructed him to keep it tidy, while Moutinho take up the playmaking duty. Which the former could be noted with his passing percentage.

Not quite sure what people expected. He's a holding midfielder and a bloody good one. He's not going to suddenly do a Yaya just because he's big and black.

It was the general assessment with the pundits . I also think it was due to instructions, the fact that he is still adapting to the national team enviroment and tactical setup (has about 4 or 5 games in the national team) and also some physical limitations (was injured in the first days of training).

Paulo Bento is following the same path as Leonardo Jardim. Being Bento even more defensive than Jardim, i think that again Carvalho will be limitated tactically to the defensive end. We will probably see some variations when chasing result with Carvalho and Moutinho as CMs but his position will be DM with Meireles and Moutinho in his front or Veloso and Moutinho as some have been advocating.

Racist.

Are all black people big? Are all black people black? There are black people who are neither big, nor black, nor people. Lazy stereotypes.

Hic.

He would certainly improve our midfield, maybe it takes a season or two to settle but he is exactly a transfer United should do.

young, bags of talent, only to get better.

That's the United way!

I didn't see the whole game as I fell asleep but he was playing very deep. If he can keep the ball then Portugal have to do less chasing in the heat. It also looked difficult to get the ball off him and he did pass the ball well under the pressure put on him.

Have no idea which direction he was playing so it's a little hard to interpret but there are loads of passes that are neither short nor sideways. Not many in the final third but that's obviously not his role.

Correct Pogue. He has the ability of doing killer passes. He has done them plenty of times and not just short 5 yard passes or sideways. Against Ireland he was indeed playing very deep since he had Moutinho and Veloso in front of him, who obviously see more of the ball in passing terms and have the mission of "conducting" Portugal´s midfield play.

what I expect of a no. 6 is protecting the defensive, break up play and move the ball quickly with high accuracy.

What I consider a bonus is if he scores or assists goals or play through ball.

If he not only defends and passes the ball but also bursts forward and could combine all those qualities he would be like Yaya Toure, Javi Martinez and Vidal in one person and we shoudn't mind about the price tag any second.

Just saw him play for the first time against Ireland. He's fecking huge! Looked tidy on the ball, having said that, it was 15 minutes against Ireland. Nani wad brilliant.

Gotta be wary about his size, it can be deceptive. Remember when we all got wet for Wanyama because he was built like a monster?

Just sign Moutinho and Carvalho and we're good. We don't need any big names. Just these two.

We could also sign Herrera and Carvalho, either way there are players out there that would instantly improve us... it'd be interesting to see who LVG ends up going with.

Every single midfield player (except Fellaini haha) will improve is this season.

I'm reluctant to pay 45M for Carvalho when he didn't proved anything.

For sure Van Gaal will prefer Schweinie or Strootman there before him. But as usual, we'll go for all the 4th or 5th choice this summer

Bring on Anderson !

Don't worry this will be the season he fulfills his potential :)

He came on at half time in this game. Playing in a defensive midfield position. Couple of observations on his 20 minutes so far.
  • Seems calm in possession. Never rushed by pressing. Opts for the safe pass to the CB of FB. Keeps possession.
  • Reads the game well and as a result is quick into the tackle. Presses and goes to win the ball back quickly.
  • It happened twice which is why I'm mentioning it. People have just run past him with the ball twice. Yes quick into the tackle, maybe more because of his reading. Didn't look very quick over the ground on those 2 occasions but maybe not enough evidence to suggest he isn't quick. I don't know.
What I can say is from clips I've seen of him, when he gets going he builds up momentum. Not great acceleration but I don't know if you would expect that from a defensive midfielder of his stature.

Reminds me of when i first saw Strootman but less intelligent. Simple, slow and reads the game well.

I missed USA first goal. But the 2nd goal it was his fault not trying to get back to help the defenders and let Bradley free. Lacks concentration and does safe passes only. I have to say we shouldn't try to sign him for 30 million this summer. Too overpriced for his current ability. I can't see him being any better than Fellaini in defensive midfield role except William have pace. Lack concentration, safe passes and great aerial duel. Though William is very good at the ball as well.

Less intelligent, how so?
I really like the look of him, wins the ball easily, good decision-making and passing.

He doesn't play a forward pass for one.. That lack intelligents and Strootman has a 'picture in his head' at all times. But Wiliam is young and i can see the potential.

I can see him being ALOT better than Fellaini, and I can forgive him for losing concentration on occassion as he's still young. Not sure if i'd fault him for the goal, he had a role in it though i'll admit.

Very good composure on the ball, which is slightly unexpected given his stature and power, but he does seem very slow off the mark. A juggernaut would be a more befitting description given his ability to cover the ground once he gets going. Agree with JSMHE suggesting he was culpable for USA's second. Didn't even come across as poor concentration to me, but simply pure laziness to not track Bradley's run. Prior to that, he was barely breaking sweat in trying to support the defence, seemed like a light jog back.

Yea, he can be better than Fellaini. But I can't see him improving our midfield for this season if his performance is like Fellaini + pace. 30 million or more for that performance then I don't think he's worth it at the moment.

I'm sure it was his fault for just jogging back when Bradley is clearly free. Unless William's role today isn't a defensive midfield or deeplying midfield then it wasn't completely his fault. But still he needs to take a blame for that

Fair enough. Seems to at least have a good range of passing even though he perhaps lacks vision as you say. Maybe just lacks a bit of experience/confidence?

Don't think he's that special really. To me it seems like some like the idea of him being amazing and us signing him, so even if he has a normal game doing nothing but the basics it's seen as some proof of him being a 'must sign'.

There was a thread about this a few days ago.
He may well turn out to be the 'next Vieira' but this performance wasn't anything special at all.

Was impressed with him personally. Quick on the tackle, moved the ball well and read danger as well. Am sure he's got more in his locker but did a good job as the shield.

Was solid but the money they are asking is ridiculous. It's more of a price for the finished product, not someone who's had basically 1 full season of first team football.
